A certain Lockwood Kipling and his fiancee Alice Macdonald met on the shores of the lake and named their first-born son after the place. Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936), poet, novelist and short story writer has made this Staffordshire village world famous. The lake, a beauty spot and one of the most romantic places in Britain, is a family centre for picnics, boating, walking and fishing as well as the steam railway. Nearby Leek is a thriving town with good pubs and restaurants and many antique shops. Nearby the beautiful Manifold Valley cuts a course through superb scenery and is a delight for both walkers and cyclists with the "Manifold Trail".
