If u want to just relax from everyday life this is definitely the place. Unfortunately we ad nothing but rain which stopped use going for walks but at least the views was nice. Everything u need in the property. Totally relaxed. We loved it.

Thank you for your kind review! The village and the whole island are lovely, we agree. Sorry about the Scottish weather, but hope you get better luck on your next adventure. Property Owner

  • "This has to be the best holiday we've had."

The location is stunning and the attention to detail within the cottage, not to mention the impeccable cleanliness! Is second to none! We will not stay anywhere else again when visiting the islands. A week wasn't nearly enough and we didn't want to leave. My husband caught a lovely brown trout which we cooked for dinner and the Lobster and Oysters we cooked freshly caught, from Stornoway, were amazing! I loved the little touches even for our dog Bonnie. Right down to leads and canine first aid kit! How thoughtful. We spent hours sitting on the decking by the water. So calming and we were lucky enough to witness the blue moon which shone beautifully on the Loch. Thank you for making our holiday so special. We will return.

Thank you so much, Debbie! (Sorry to be a bit slow in responding.) I'm very happy you had a nice relaxing stay and hope that Bonnie enjoyed herself too. Very important that the pups have a nice time, as well as the fishermen. I hope your next adventure will be as good. Property Owner

  • "We’re just home from a fantastic week at Old Mission Hall."

The directions and general information pack we were sent ahead of our stay were very helpful and contained lots of helpful tips for our stay. The cottage itself was tucked away down a track with ample parking available. The cottage and garden is very private, in no way overlooked and has a beautiful view over the loch. The unenclosed part of the garden featured a regular pair of sheep visitors who accessed the space from the loch who were very entertaining! Watch out for the sheep pop they leave though! The cottage itself is incredibly well equipped - and the welcome basket was lovely. It also had all the things which are so often missing in self catered stays but make a stay so much more comfortable. A kitchen with proper trays and knives, and tin foil etc. And a dog friendly cottage that felt actually friendly from than just tolerating - doggy bowls, poo bags, a spare crate etc. Apologies for any sane we left as we had daily trips to different beautiful beaches! The place was very well appointed for all your practical needs as well - good water pressure for the shower, lots of sockets and spare chargers, internet and a smart tv for watching on an evening. We were blessed with some good weather in our week - which did mean that like all conservatories, it got a bit warm in there! A lovely stay in a lovely cottage - thanks for having us.

Thank you, Emma, for your kind words. Sorry about the sheep visitors! I hope they didn't bother your pup... their owner has been alerted and we'll see whether we can improve the fences this winter. Honestly though some sheep are amazing jumpers considering how block-y and bulky they are. I'm glad you had a good holiday, enjoyed the beautiful beaches, and I hope you'll be back someday to revisit our lovely island. Property Owner

  • "The Old Mission Hall is perfectly described, in a stunning secluded location ideally situated to see as much as possible of this beautiful island there is plenty of space for parking and we had no issues at all."

This is, without doubt, the most well-equipped cottage we have ever stayed in and there have been many, it was also spotless - thank you to your wonderful housekeeper Karis - you deserve a pay rise ;). The welcome pack was amazing again the best we have ever received. The decking at the rear was perfect for relaxing or eating outside (we were lucky enough to sit out every evening and watch the local wildlife) and the conservatory was a perfect location to watch the setting sun/wildlife. There is even a spotting scope which is a fantastic addition. We were blessed with amazing weather but the cottage has loads of touches that would make days enjoyable if the weather wasn't so kind from books to board games cd player tv etc. Internet connection is perfectly adequate and allowed us to do all we needed (if you want a high-speed connection don't holiday in rural Scotland!) The addition of a landline gives security in the event connection/signal drops though we had no issues at all. We brought some basic food items with us and filled the car before our ferry but honestly wish we hadn't bothered as fuel was cheaper on the island and food prices were comparable with the mainland's, two large supermarkets in Stornoway, and loads of 'local smaller shops' meant we got everything we needed. A beautiful bathroom with an amazing shower and a lovely comfortable bed made this wonderful cottage in a perfect location one of the most amazing holidays we have ever had, Thankyou

Ah, thank you for an amazing review, Alma. I'm very pleased you had a pleasant holiday. Indeed, Karis is wonderful and deserves all pay rises! I'm happy to hear the Starlink internet worked well for you (whatever one thinks of Mr. Musk, this product is great). We do keep the landline for backup. It's surprising to hear food prices were comparable to the mainland, I hope you found the seafood shop on the quay in Stornoway. And how good that you had great weather. All in all, I hope that someday you'll come back to enjoy the beautiful Isle of Lewis. Property Owner

Had a fantastic holiday made all the better by the wonderful location and comfort of the cottage. Fully furnished with all the things you could ask for. We particularly enjoyed the quiet and tranquility of the village and the positioning of the property. We sat on the balcony watching the birds on the loch for hours. It was great that the rear garden was enclosed so our medium sized dog was able to run around out there.

  • "We had 2 wk's at Old Mission Hall, we were very dis-appointed, the website description is inaccurate, 'ample off road parking' - you actually park on a public turning area directly outside the cottage front door, and anger the locals who use it as a turning area, or park in one of the many large puddles which were present outside the cottage throughout our 2 week tenure - We only found this out when we were parked directly outside the front door, an irate local in a pickup truck with trailer shouted, that where I was parked was in a 'public turning area' - not what anyone wants to hear when on holiday!"

[What looks like was once a concrete 'hardstanding' for parking Vehicle's at the cottage, now has a Shed, Oil tank, and several large boulders on it preventing vehicles parking there] The website description ought to make this clear and tell you to bring wellies with you - if it rain's you'll be parking in large water puddles!! The photo's on the website fail to show that the cottage is overlooked by the large house next door, [some of the photo's showing the cottage on the website must have been taken from next door's garden!] I couldn't find this house on any map, when I looked on a 1: 25000 scale OS map BEFORE booking the cottage, the OS map shows a similar sized building to Mission hall [probably next doors garage], not something 4x the size of the cottage with a gated drive, garage etc etc. We were expecting an isolated cottage, this certainly ain't isolated. The cottage access lane was almost blocked off/hidden the day we arrived 'in a very heavy rainstorm', by a boat on a trailer parked outside the first house on the lane, which made access very difficult, the access lane was also blocked during our stay by visitors to the house next door , who parked on the single track lane, had we wanted to go out in our car, we would have had to ask them to move - all 3 of them!! There was no cottage central heating other than pressing the +1 hour button on the cottage heating controller [which turned it on for 1 hour only], there was no thermostat to control the central heating in the cottage. [I suspect CH was either turned down to minimum or controlled via the internet] the only other way to heat the cottage was a log burner - again this had no way to control the burning of the logs, which quickly made the temperature very hot in the lounge, each large log only lasted for ~20 mins or so, Most cottages have log burners, but this one is awful, no control over the log burning at all, some log burners would allow one of these logs burn for hours and control the heat output - not this one:( There was no cupboard for storing [our 2 weeks' worth of] food, every cupboard/drawer/shelf, had 'stuff' in, or on it. The cottage kitchen & bedroom is well equipped, the king-size bed is very comfortable, but the cottage has far too much unnecessary 'stuff which gets in the way' for a holiday rental IMO. The sofa bed in the glass conservatory, had not been cleaned, the fitted sheet looked like a dog had been sleeping on it, the dirty paw prints and dog hairs were testament to that. We washed the fitted sheet, we wanted to sleep under the stars in the conservatory, however no central heating control, and cold outside temperatures, made this impossible during our stay:( The plusnet internet, at 40kbs [slower than UK 'dialup' of 20 years ago] I suspect had been speed limited?? Every time I checked the connection speed it came back at 40kbs - I wasn't able to check our email for the 2 weeks we were there, the email site just 'timed out' There's no Vodafone or O2 mobile signal either at the cottage, neither of these are major points IMO but if internet is advertised in the cottage description, most people then expect it to work at a usable speed - 40kbs certainly isn't usable. The grassy area outside the cottage had several large tumps of disgusting dog poo - yuch- welcome to Old Mission hall - woof woof!! The 'welcome' basket was one of the best we've ever received, shame the rest of the cottage wasn't up to this standard, I suggest the owners [who live in USA] book the cottage unannounced to check the above out issues for themselves. I wish previous renters of this cottage had mentioned some of these points above - we definitely wouldn't have booked 'Old Mission Hall'. We've used Sykes cottages many times - usually the reviews are fair, I can't believe previous renters had not had similar experiences and mentioned them in their reviews of Old Mission Hall. > However for those people thinking of visiting Isle of Lewis, I can thoroughly recommend the island - we'll be back, just not at Old Mission Hall.

Thank you, Mal, for your very extensive remarks which are unique in our experience. I am quite surprised that upon finding the cottage so unsatisfactory that you stayed two full weeks, and that your publication here is the first that I have heard of your concerns. Had I been contacted I would certainly have been pleased to let you go away immediately, with a refund. I'll address what I can. The central heating controls are located in the entry, and instructions for it are on page 3 of our visitor guide sent to you ten days before your stay; detailed instructions are in the large book on the shelf nearby. Neither the modem nor the thermostat are controlled by internet. The internet speed is what is available in our rural area as explained on page 7 of the visitor guide; I do not have trouble with access, writing as I am now from that very same internet. I apologize for not cleaning up after some other dog and am puzzled by your reference to the sofa bed. The house over the hill next door does not overlook the property unless you climb its roof. I shall talk to "the locals" about use of our private lane. The area in front of the cottage is also private land, although we allow the postie to turn around there. We hope that you'll find some other less "dis-appointing" place to stay if you come back to the Isle of Lewis Property Owner

About the location

CROMORE

Stornoway 27 miles.

Settled along the coast of the Isle of Lewis, between Loch Cromore and Loch Erisort, the small but friendly crofting township of Cromore is isolated, yet thriving with the undisturbed beauty of the wild Outer Hebrides. Once only accessible by sea, this former fishing village offers footpaths that trail through breathtaking scenery, home to an abundance of wildlife including native nesting sea birds. To the west of the village you can discover the weatherworn ruins of the 16th century church of St Columba that look out to sea. There are plenty of fishing opportunities, whether your preference is for the waves or the calmer lochs, and local amenities including a pub serving traditional food, a village shop and a café are within a short drive away. Stornoway, the only town in the Outer Hebrides, can be reached within an hour’s drive, offering a working harbour and a fantastic array of shops and award-winning restaurants serving local food.
