HEPTONSTALL

Hebden Bridge 2 miles; Haworth 6 miles.

The village of Heptonstall is set high on a prominent hillside above its close neighbour, Hebden Bridge. Heptonstall is one of West Yorkshire's best kept secrets; a wonderfully preserved village with a main street that has changed very little in the last 200 years. Formerly an important centre for hand-loom weaving, the village still retains its original trading hall, while the old Grammar School, by the churchyard, also testifies to the village's illustrious past. In the centre are the two remaining pubs, the Cross Inn, believed to date from the early 17th century, and the White Lion, rumoured to be haunted by a Roundhead on a horse, a throwback to when the village was besieged during the Civil War. Nearby is the attractive town of Hebden Bridge, while the area is a must for steam railway enthusiasts who will enjoy the thriving Worth Valley Railway. Skipton, "Gateway to the Dales", is an easy and scenic car ride away.

Previous Visitors' Comments
The cottage rates higher in my opinion than the 2 stars awarded. The quirkiness and originality of the place are a special bonus as is the excellent walking available from the doorstep. A good bus service was also noted, that would be essential if one was unwilling for the challenge of the steep hill down into Hebden Bridge. The closeness to the historic Methodist Church in Heptonstall, which provided a warm welcome to visitors, was also good. The farm shop as indicated was a real find after a day's walking the Pennine Way! Evening entertainment in the local theatre was of a high quality. Overall - a real quality break.

The view from the window to Stoodley Pike was excellent. The lounge was comfortable after walking all day. We were lucky that a Fair Trade market was in Hebden Bridge all weekend and added to the atmosphere.

We absolutely loved our holiday in this little but very cosy cottage. The decoration is fantastic. Congratulations to the person who did it!
