"A pleasant week walking in Swaledale."
The cottage is nice, good location and views. The very odd thing is the fact that twice in the listing for the cottage (including once in red!), it's mentioned that there are no footpaths near the cottage nor many in swaledale - even a cursory glance at an Ordnance Survey map will tell you otherwise. There is a footpath directly behind the cottage and I walked from there to Keld, picking up the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast. Swaledale is a walkers heaven, and walkers far outnumber road traffic. Don't let this misinformation put you off a weeks rambling stay.

The comments in the listing regarding the lack of footpaths arose due to feedback received in 2021 when a customer staying at the property complained over the lack of footpaths on the roadway (B6270) when leaving their vehicle and walking to the property which is not unusual in the Swaledale area. Other than this the location, as you rightly point out benefits from numerous footpaths across the countryside. Enjoyed the personal decorative touches. Thank you for the wine, milk and biscuits - appreciated after a long journey! Only negative would be the towels. They were a bit small and rough and felt they should be upgraded to match the rest of the cottage quality.

It was very clean and the information file covered everything. We had asked the owner if there was any information on local walks and he left a folder with some very useful ones which we enjoyed. Although the cottage is on the main road, we were able to park in a rough layby quite near and I was surprised that we were not disturbed at all by traffic. It is as described in terms of accessibility which was not a problem for us. Thank you for a making it a good holiday and for the milk and lovely biscuits which were waiting for us when we arrived, also flowers on the table - a nice touch.

"We were pleasantly surprised to find that the photos did not do the cottage justice; it is larger than is looks and fantastically well equipped."
The bathroom with its large walk in shower and rainfall head was very welcome at the end of a long day walking in the beautiful countryside. Perhaps a photo of the bathroom would be a good idea. There is a great variety of walks from the cottage itself. We enjoyed evening BBQs in the front courtyard overlooking the dale and and a roaring fire in the wood-burner on cold nights. The owner was very helpful and extremely good at communicating with us.

Some lovely extra touches like the bird box and tasteful décor and basics provided like tea bags and coffee machine. Garden furniture good to sit out after long walks and on warm evenings. Wifi worked well.

The cottage had everything you could possibly need for a very comfortable stay. It was clean and very well looked after. There was plenty of great walks right on the doorstep and we were very lucky with the weather for the time of year. Would definitely recommend Brown Hill Cottage and hope to visit again.

"Found parking rather difficult, having a disability, I found it hard to get out of the car onto a main road and not being able to see what’s coming around the bend."
On one side there was a restriction to get out the car being a high grass bank. There was no footpath from parking to cottage. Maybe this should be mentioned in the description on your website. The luxury underfloor heating in the shower room did not come on and was rather chilly in the mornings. In the information pack at the cottage it said not to alter the timings where ever it was so that was disappointing. The cottage was well equipped, in the information pack it requested that we leave the cottage as we found it, which is fair enough, but to request us to hoover and clean the property before we leave seems odd, is this not included in the rental, especially when they have a cleaner coming in on the day of departure. The hoover was very heavy and even my husband struggled to get it upstairs and I would certainly not have managed.
Thank you for your feedback. The published listing for Brown Hill Cottage highlights that parking is roadside, on a first-come, first-served basis. We also advise of the stone steps to the property, which are clearly pictured. I will add some extra notes re parking to make this clearer. As regards the lack of footpath there is no roadside footpath on the road between Muker , Gunnerside and Reeth, a distance of approximately eight miles. The cottage is located between Reeth and Gunnerside. There are virtually no roadside footpaths in the whole of the Swaledale Valley unless in a town i.e. Reeth or Leyburn. My partner and I clean and service the cottage after the departure of every client. The Saturday you arrived, I had checked that the under floor heating in the bathroom was working. The temperature setting is set low due to the Summer period. As we are approaching Autumn I will ensure that the temperature is set higher. I should point out that on the day of your departure, both of us were in shorts and T shirts due to the warm weather. We do ask clients not to alter the heating timer settings as sometimes the heating has been left running after the client has left. Additionally this spoils the comfort for other guests. There are boost controls on the systems. The control for the under floor heating is located on the wall and outside the bathroom. We do ask clients to leave the cottage as best they can, as they have found it, again to be fair on the cleaner and out of respect for incoming guests. We do suggest using the Hoover, due unfortunately to the condition some guests have left the carpets, and in the case of obvious mess. There is no expectation that elderly or infirm guests would take the Hoover up the stairs but I do thank you for leaving the cottage as she found it. Mr K Sharpe (Owner) Property Owner

It was spotless, the bed we slept in was comfortable, there were books and maps in the kitchen relevant to the area and walk suggestions from the owners.The week was very cold but the cottage was lovely and warm- even when there was snow and sleet!The use of eco friendly products for washing up etc was good.There was even a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge and beautiful roses in a vase to welcome us on arrival- plus some chocolates in the lounge! We plan to return.

The owners of the cottage have gone out of their way to provide every facility needed, as my Yorkshire dales born and bred parents said, "short of nowt you've got". It's impressive that the cottage has many local craftsmanship items including the local pottery from Garden House Pottery in Reeth - we went and bought some! The cottage is very clean indeed. We used the wood burner on one evening - really toasty - and all logs provided. We also used the BBQ for the best lamb chops ever from Campbells in Leyburn. The shed provided ample room to lock up our bikes. The beds were comfy and there was ample draws and wardrobe space. Parking isn't great - a pull in off the road 20m down the lane but wasn't a problem. People less mobile may struggle with the deep steps up to the patio/front door and the internal stairs. The Punch Bowl pub is close by with great food and beer but is a longer 5-10 mins walk up the hill from the cottage than portrayed in the description. Can highly recommend the pub at Mucker for food and the Kearton hotel at Thwaite. Very enjoyable and excellent value for 4 people.

"An absolutely brilliant holiday cottage."
Everything we needed for a great holiday. This cottage is so well furnished and decorated it felt like home. The separate dining room was great for both eating and for use as an office for my wifes family tree recearch. The Broadband was a bit Iffy at times but this in no way detracted from an amazing holiday. We even enjoyed having to argue with the neighbours chicken before using the parking layby.

"What a cottage!"
It wasn’t just a house - it was a “home from home”. Location was lovely, very quiet and peaceful. All the little touches - bottle of wine in the fridge, sweets, flowers - were very appreciated. The cottage had everything we needed and more. Weather wasn’t very good, rain and snow, but there was plenty to keep us and our 2 grandchildren occupied. Wouldn’t hesitate to come again!!

"We had an amazing Christmas at Brown Hill Cottage."
It was a really lovely cosy place to spend the holidays and we really appreciated the effort that had been put in to decorate the place and really make it Christmassy and welcoming for us. In anticipation of planning Christmas in a rented cottage, with all the cooking that entails, we'd brought along extra baking trays, roasting pans, condiments etc as these are things that in general you don't expect to be provided, however we didn't need any of it! We were able to do all of our planned festive cooking and celebrating using the cookware and crockery provided. I've never stayed anywhere so well equipped! I am already trying to work out when I might be able to go back.

About the location
LOW ROW
Reeth 3 miles; Hawes 13 miles.
A hillside scattering of traditional farms and cottages make up the pretty village of Low Row situated to the north of the River Swale. A delightful area with magnificent countryside and stunning views of the valley and surrounding fells. The village of Reeth just a short drive away dates back to Saxon times and became of sufficient size and importance to be mentioned in the Domesday Book. Later it became a centre for hand-knitting and local lead mining. Its eighteenth-century houses and hotel clustered around the triangular village green make it one of the very popular Dales villages. Askrigg better known to millions as Darrowby in TV's James Herriot's "All Creatures Great and Small" is just a short drive away as well as Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force (England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft).
