The amenities catered for all, cleanliness and the Cottage standards were first class. Location was just off the main part of the village, 4 pubs, 2 cafes, local independent shops. The wood behind the Cottage gave a wonderful opportunity for walks and the local's were very informative. Excellent, we would use again.

  • "This was a last minute booking and I'm so glad we decided on Crooked Cottage."

It is such a charming cottage and it's obvious a lot of thought has gone into the furnishings etc. We loved the quirky features. The stairs and layout took some getting used to but that was part of the fun. The little garden was lovely. Some guests seem to have had problems with the next door neighbour but the house has a sold sign on it so think they may have moved. Just one criticism, I couldn't work out how to use the cooker, even with the instructions, and wasn't prepared to spend any more time of my holiday trying to figure it out. A simple oven with "old fashioned knobs" would have been better. Would definitely recommend it although people with mobility issues may find the stairs a bit troublesome.

    Reviewed by Sue13.3Aug 2022

  • "Describing the cottage as having a garden (approx 2m x 2m of concrete) was misleading, particularly since the next-door neighbour was very difficult about our using our access right - "you do have access, but I am letting my dogs out"."

But for the fact that the cottage was very close to a wooded walk, so that we could exercise and relieve our dog without using the "garden", things would have been very difficult.

Minor points: We felt uncomfortable using the rear patio area as the next door neighbours and her dog seemed to dislike our little pet dog and holiday visitors so we did not use it ( shame as we did try and engage with her maybe having a bad day ) Accessing the key on arrival was unusual having to walk through other peoples back space and washing lines , we felt intrusive to there private space. The area and location was perfect with lots of nice walks close by and the people in the village were super friendly. Would absolutely recommend this highly as a holiday break, superb cottage.

It was unfortunately 2 floors down to the fridge if you were in the lounge in the evening. The location was really good, very close to pubs and shops/takeaways and was an ideal base to explore. I was disappointed with the outside space as it was much smaller than expected and as the plants were overgrown and full of mosquito's and flies it was impossible to sit out without being bitten, also it left no room to use the BBQ which was provided.

We hardly used the lounge, not because it was not comfortable but two flights of stairs if you want to top your glass was a bit of a pain, however the upside was that we watched little television and spent time reading and doing a jigsaw which is what a holiday is for! The sitting out area was smaller than I expected and even though it was pleasant it does not get the sun. There is are lovely walks behind the cottage into Manor Vale Woods for long or short walks, handy for an evening stroll for the dog. The village had excellent amenities, a butchers, greengrocers, bakery, Indian, Chinese and chip shop as well as a Spar and Co-op and there is a larger Co-op and Lidl in Pickering (7 miles) for a bigger more varied shop. Lots to do in the area which makes the cottage ideal as a base. Jane (the owner) left us milk, cake and eggs, changed the linen after the first week and left us another 6 eggs.

We will be back next year................. Next year we will be looking closely at the staircases in the cottages, at our age it became a pain to go up and down two staircases to access the lounge from the kitchen dining area, especially as the staircases are narrow and twisty. It was very well prepared for our arrival, and we appreciated the fresh-cut flowers and the food and drink offerings that welcomed us. It was ideal for two, with a small back yard and table and chairs, surrounded by a bank of container flowers and some stone walling. A great retreat, and an opportunity to meet the neighbours, if you wish. Our one reservation about the cottage was the two flights of narrow stairs - plenty to hold on to, but possibly a challenge for the elderly, infirm or disabled. The Cottage was ideally located in a quiet part of the village, but only two or three minutes' walk from shops and the King's Head Hotel, a friendly venue which serves excellent meals. Everyday needs are well served by the local shops, and the local pharmacy even sells "medicinal" wine! Kirkbymoorside is a delightful, characterful, historic small town with a Wednesday market. It attracts visitors, but is not inundated with them! It's also an ideal base for touring the North Yorkshire Moors and Whitby, where we commuted to the Folk festival a couple of times, and were able to park centrally - in peak season! - by arriving early and breakfasting there. It's a 45 minute drive, but passes quickly and pleasantly enough with so much moorland scenery to enjoy en route.
