Ref: 769 Archway
FROGHALL Ashbourne 11 miles; Leek 8 miles. Froghall lies in the beautiful wooded slopes of the Churnet Valley, in the Staffordshire Moorlands and on the southern fringe of the Peak District. The village has a pub, which serves food, and the nearby hamlet of Foxt has a village shop/Post Office and pub also serving good food. It's an excellent base for a holiday, with a vast selection of walks for all abilities on the doorstep. There are also fascinating relics of the area's industrial heritage - the Caldon canal (built in 1776 and restored and opened for navigation in 1974) runs through the valley and visitors will enjoy a scenic ride on the Churnet Valley Railway steam trains. A great touring base for exploring all of the Peak District and the Staffordshire Moorlands - Alton Towers is just a 10 minute drive away and the nearby Potteries are well worth a visit. FOXTWOOD COTTAGES Froghall 0.5 miles.
A group of individual holiday properties situated in a wonderful rural setting at Froghall Wharf in the delightful Churnet Valley. The properties overlook the Caldon Canal, with its newly restored lock and basin moorings, and lie within 30 acres of grounds which include a private fishing lake, woodland, meadows and a small stream. A paradise for nature lovers - if you are lucky you will see kingfishers, herons, buzzards and deer - and the wild flowers are beautiful in the spring and early summer. There are dozens of walks in the area, including those along the canal towpath. The cottages are all recently built but in traditional canalside style with archways leading to a central courtyard. The accommodation has been equipped, furnished and decorated to a very high standard and they make a superb location for an "away from it all" type holiday at any time of the year. They can be booked together to accommodate larger family groups of up to 20. The owners also live on site with their family and friendly pets.
