  • "We loved everything about Pursglove Cottage: its position high up the side of the fell, with fabulous views and walks directly from the front door; its characterful cosiness in the wildest of weather; cooking on the Aga and eating in the delightful old kitchen; sitting round the splendid wood-burner."

The cottage has a real lived-in family feeling, and is full of the quirkiness of old buildings. It is a very comfortable characterful space: everything and more than we could have wished for.

The cottage was very spacious, warm, comfortable and well equipped and the owners were very accommodating - even supplying new baking equipment, as I previously mentioned that my granddaughter and I were looking forward to baking on the Aga.

  • "Had a lovely stay at Pursglove Cottage, quiet location with great views and an interesting drive up the hill!"

Wonderful to sit out and hear and see the flying displays by curlews and lapwings of an evening. Spacious and well appointed for a large family gathering. We are dog owners and the cottage is ideal with sensible flooring and an enclosed garden (be aware that sheep freely roam the Blades and are usually outside the gates). Overall a great place to stay, enjoyed by all the family, we will return. A small suggestion, the bedrooms have wardrobes, but no chest of drawers for clothing. It may be just us, but on a walking holiday we don't have much clothing to hang, but plenty to fold and store.

  • "1, There is no mention in the house details that this property is accessed up a steep narrow lane which includes a very sharp hairpin bend."

We had a dry sunny week, others wont be so lucky. 2, There is no mention of the steep and cramped staircase up to the bedrooms two bathrooms. Some will find these stairs difficult to manoeuvre. 3, Whist there may be space for 5 cars to park, there is actually only hardcore parking for one. When we arrived it was raining and the surrounding land was wet and quite boggy. I understand why - the surrounding land is pasture - however. 4, We could not get any signal for the TV. And whilst we had a great weeks walking - there are times you would like to use a television. BBC i player very useful. I know some will say you're on holiday but even so the world championship snooker was on that week and if I want to watch a frame or two the TV should be up it. TO BE FAIR - we had a great week - the weather was kind and we absolutey love the area. This is a spacious cottage in a beautiful location, nice and warm - but its not perfect.

  • "Pursglove Cottage is a really beautiful old building in a lovely peaceful location."

We had everything we wanted and the facilities provided were in perfect working order and condition. The low doorways are all part of the charm but tricky for tall people, the stairs not suitable for children/elderly as could be a bit dangerous but we had no problems. The drive up to the cottage is steep but worth it once you get to the cottage! The views were amazing and we had a lovely week away from it all for my 40th birthday celebrations! Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!

  • "The pictures of this listing need seriously updating, we actually left the place cleaner than it was on arrival."

We had to empty the dishwasher when we arrived and had to clean the oven and tray before using it. There’s huge (very noticeable) cobwebs everywhere and the downstairs WC/shower room is disgusting, the tiles are mouldy and it’s very unwelcoming, the hot water is hazardous in this particular room (we avoided this for showering) we had to use the upstairs bathrooms but also found this difficult as the only option you have is a bath! Not a preferred option for the 10 in the party as we do prefer to take a shower, and as there’s only the one downstairs this could do to be addressed. The beds were ok(ish) but the quilts were paper thin. The sofas in the main living room are VERY uncomfortable and not at all welcoming, we ended up sat around the dining table in the dining room, the place on the whole is very dark (the photos of the listing have a clever use of lighting) we have stayed all over the Dales in various cottages so we are very aware this can often be the case with these typically old traditional farm houses. It’s very difficult to find and having attended a family funeral the day we arrived it was dark when we eventually found it, so ended up bogged in the grass of what we thought was “parking for 5 cars” we had no idea where to put or cars so parked bumper to bumper around the outhouse in front of the property. Myself and my Husband felt very disappointed with our stay as this was a Christmas gift from us to the family. This place is in need of some serious TLC, and a good deep clean.

  • "Pursglove Cottage is a large and comfortable detached house in a beautiful position."

Our stay was very enjoyable despite a 7 day stay turning into 9 days due to being snowed in. There is loads of walking available directly from the front door with Keld and its community cafe further up the valley a real countryside treat. The beds are incredibly comfortable and the kitchen is very well equipped, and is now a modern fitted kitchen that has been updated from the photos. The Aga provides continuous warmth and plenty of hot water for baths and showers. Overall a very enjoyable stay, and many thanks to the owner for her patience and understanding given the circumstances surrounding the weather.

The house was beautiful and so much bigger than the photos show. The kitchen has everything you could need. Plenty of things to keep the toddlers occupied and everything we needed for the baby. We were really pleased the travel cot provided had a newborn insert! The beds were so comfortable and we all slept really well.

Ideal for our family birthday weekend for children and young grandchildren. Lots of home comforts including log burners, aga, comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen and playroom. Great layout for the family and we loved staying in the traditional Dales property with places to explore/walk from the front door. The pub does a fabulous Sunday lunch. Would love to stay again and explore further.

Fully equipped with everything and more one could want, with very thoughtful touches (e.g. spare toothbrush/toiletries in case of forgotten items). Lovely comfortable beds. So pleased we chose this cottage for our last minute break. It may be helpful to include in holiday details that the drive is very, very, steep and twisting - less confident drivers may be unnerved. Likewise, indoors steep uneven stairs could be a problem for elderly/infirm/disabled. Having said this, neither was a problem to us, if anything they enhanced the individuality of the cottage. Very dog friendly, with toys, bowls, blankets, towels, etc., provided. A safe and secure garden meant we could relax and not worry where the dog was.

  • "Beautiful location amongst a small cluster of cottages up a steep and windy lane."

Plenty of walks from the front door and darkness to star gaze at night. Large cottage full of character and charm which comfortably accommodated our large family group. Well heated with two wood burners too which we also used. Facilities were good with plenty of kitchen equipment and a great Aga. Property had just been sold though which means a return trip sometime unlikely which is a shame. Local pub is a around 3/4 mile away and is a very steep walk back. Previous review had said the only shower wasn’t working but we had no problem if instructions were followed. We all had a great week - thank you.

  • "A proper old cottage, set amongst fantastic scenery."

Very comfy, great having a dog/utility room that you could access from outside and bonus towels provided for the dogs. Steep hill, and a couple of tight bends on approach. Plenty of room for 6 adults. My only gripe was that the downstairs shower was not working properly, and although the owners had left a note to explain this, it was disappointing especially as the advertised second shower was just a hand held shower head, mixer tap did not work effectively, so everyone had to have a bath. Not a problem for most, but it was advertised as two functioning showers and they weren't. Other than that, a beautiful place to stay and I would go back there. Plenty of walks on the doorstep.

  • "The cottage is spacious and very well equipped, especially in the kitchen, which was excellent for a Family Christmas with lots of cooking."

We actually liked the Aga, having never cooked on one before, but the additional gas oven was invaluable for Christmas Day cooking. The access road is tricky and very steep (around 30%) with one hairpin that is impossible to turn in one go. We were lucky in that there was no frost, but ice would make this impassable. The hard standing area outsude the cottage is limited and we fould it difficult to unpack / pack the cars without getting muddy boots. It would be so much easier if there were some stone standing. The beds were generally OK but the small one in the single room was only really suitable for a child. One niggle was the lack of opening bedroom windows - the sashes appear to be painted over and jammed solid, so it could be stuffy in the rooms at night if you like to sleep with the windows open. But, overall, it is a lovely venue and we really liked it.

There’s a well stocked kitchen, good laundry facilities, spare wood for the stove, some spare cosmetics and cleaning stuff etc. The location is spectacular and the cottage is warm, spacious and comfortable. The Aga which is on all the time is a nice feature. The access road is extremely steep with a double hairpin bend so if you’re not a confident driver or arrive here late at night in the dark it may be challenging to reach, but once you’re there it’s worth it. It’s about a 10 minute walk down to the pub - probably 20 minutes back up! Eight of us went and we had a great time. I would recommend Pursglove Cottage

We really didn't need to take anything apart from clothes and food with us as the cottage was equipped with everything you could possibly need and want, and have never stayed anywhere before where this was the case.Lots of good walking with outstanding scenery and the most beautiful sunrise to greet you in the morningThe boot/ come utility room was great for wet and muddy boots and would be a must for our four legged friends. Especially for guests arriving in winter, if icy, or snow. Also if arriving after dark, as the first time we all drove up we all felt it was far worse than described and the description almost downplayed the steepness and tricky hairpins! We all agreed it would put us off in winter unless we all had 4 wheel drive cars. Apart from the access it was a perfect cottage for our group of friends having a get together. It was very suited to walkers, with its utility boot room. We loved the AGA once we got our heads around timings! The kitchen must be very cosy in winter!

The owner was incredibly accommodating when I contacted her directly with some questions, and Sykes responded really quickly. The owners have really thought of everything for family groups - baby-friendly crockery, highchair, different types of child-friendly sleeping items (cots/bed rail etc) and changing mats were all welcome additions and not usually found in other rentals! If I could give one tiny bit of feedback to the owner to make the cottage even more welcoming, it would be to perhaps include a "basics" welcome basket of some tea/coffee/butter/bread/biscuits/milk. It's always lovely to see this in other places and although the cottage info states that items in the freezer are available to use, a few fresh basics would be brilliant too! Thank you for a lovely weekend away!

About the location

LOW ROW

Reeth 3 miles; Hawes 13 miles.

A hillside scattering of traditional farms and cottages make up the pretty village of Low Row situated to the north of the River Swale. A delightful area with magnificent countryside and stunning views of the valley and surrounding fells. The village of Reeth just a short drive away dates back to Saxon times and became of sufficient size and importance to be mentioned in the Domesday Book. Later it became a centre for hand-knitting and local lead mining. Its eighteenth-century houses and hotel clustered around the triangular village green make it one of the very popular Dales villages. Askrigg better known to millions as Darrowby in TV's James Herriot's "All Creatures Great and Small" is just a short drive away as well as Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force (England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft).
