It is also home to the island's most celebrated landmark, Dunvegan Castle. Perched on a rock with sweeping loch views, this impressive stronghold has been the Macleod Clan's family residence since it was built in the 1200s. Numerous treasures on display include the 'Fairy Flag', a sacred piece of silk with mysterious powers. Back in the village is the Giant Angus MacAskill Museum, devoted to Scotland's tallest ever man, while things to see and do nearby include Iron Age Forts, a piping museum, mackerel fishing - even spotting basking sharks off Neist Point. And if you're a keen mountaineer, the neighbouring Cuillin range rank high amongst Britain's most challenging.
