Okehampton Castle

Want to discover a major part of Okehampton’s history? Come to Okehampton Castle!

The medieval ruin was once the largest castle in Devon and is now a must-see for any history buff in the area. The landmark enjoys beautiful, woodland surroundings and is truly a lovely outing.

Okehampton Castle at one point enjoyed a motte and bailey layout, before transforming into a lavish residence in the 14th century. However, in 1539 Henry VIII destroyed the castle and it became the ruin you see today.

An array of seating options can be found within the ruins alongside a wealth of riverside picnic areas nearby. Settle down for a bite to eat here while admiring the many birds that have made Okehampton Castle their home.

Wildflowers and meadows are also available in abundance here, making this a beautiful spot for unwinding.

A free audio tour is provided by English Heritage, too, so you can be transported 100 years into the past and imagine how the castle once looked.

Ample history and sights await at Okehampton Castle…
