St Anthony Head

St Anthony Head is famed for its military history dating back to 1796 when the first artillery was built in response to French invasion. The artillery was a battery of 24-pounder cannons which were replaced in 1885 by 64-pounder muzzle loaders. In 1904 a new coastal fort was built with two 6-inch VII breech loading guns.

Visitors today can see the gun pit, interior hoist, battery hoist and battery. National Trust tours run weekly in the summer, giving visitors the chance to learn all about this fascinating site.

After a tour and walk along the head, why not visit Thirstea Co? This charming tearoom sits above Towan Beach serving homemade soup, sandwiches, pasties, cream teas and much more.
