Let's start in Ayrshire, birthplace of Robert Burns and an
absolute paradise for golfers, with over forty courses some of
championship status. Sailing enthusiasts flock to the Firth of
Clyde's sheltered waters, while walkers and cyclists head for
the impressive granite mountains. And do hop across to the Isle of
Arran, a tiny version of Scotland showcasing a mesmerising choice
of activities.
Dumfries and Galloway is a truly unspoilt corner of Scotland
fringed with deserted beaches - sands where Burns once galloped on
horseback; where whisky smugglers came ashore. Romantic ruined
castles and other historic monuments dot the landscape, constant
reminders of past times. Explore the Galloway Forest Park, where
deer are more common than man and nature has cast its magic,
offering a mix of forest, moorland and lochs. You can also expect a
few surprises - there's a town for artists (Kirkcudbright),
books (Wigtown) and food (Castle Douglas); even a Tibetan Buddhist
Monastery!
Or opt for the Scottish Borders, brimming with castles, abbeys,
stately homes and museums, offering a fascinating insight into the
area's bloody history. Look out for pageants and festivals
during your stay, along with Rugby Sevens' tournaments - rugby
is extremely popular here. You'll also find fantastic fishing
