When you think of Hereford, certain things instantly spring to mind. Those white-faced, red cattle, renowned for producing melt-in-the-mouth beef. Apple orchards and cider. Sensational Wye salmon. Little wonder it's such an important market centre and also a fantastic place for a gourmet break!
And then there's Hereford's fascinating history dating back to Saxon times. Star attraction is Hereford Cathedral, featuring an extraordinary Chained Library and the world-renowned Mappa Mundi, a spiritual and geographical world map drawn on calf skin around 1300 AD. As well as being a place of worship, the cathedral has a musical tradition, with lunchtime concerts, evening recitals and the legendary Three Choirs Festival every three years.
Hereford's other prime landmark is High Town, where you'll find the main market square (general goods, crafts, antiques and local produce) and The Old House, a splendid, black and white museum depicting life in Jacobean times. Other interesting museums include the Cider Museum and the Waterworks Museum.
For drama, film, comedy and music, The Courtyard is Hereford's thriving arts' centre. Enjoy a flutter Arabian style at Hereford Racecourse. Hire a canoe and paddle down the Wye. Spot kingfishers, buzzards and other wildlife at Lugg Meadows. Or drive to Golden Valley (around 10 miles from your Hereford cottage) and trek with llamas.
