Just show me Ravenglass Cottages
Where mountains meet sea, get-away-from-it-all in a Ravenglass
cottage scattered in and around this unique coastal village in the
Lakes.
Steeped in history, Ravenglass was once a Roman port, thanks to
its natural harbour and estuary, today dotted with fishing boats
and leisure craft. There's a well-preserved Roman bathhouse in
the village while the surrounding region is littered with ancient
treasures from various periods - Hardknott Roman Fort, Eskdale
Mill, St. Catherine's Church at Boot to name a few. Ravenglass
oozes charm and amenities include a pub, couple of hotels and a few
small shops.
All aboard 'La'al Ratty', the delightful narrow
gauge Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway! Trundle from the village
through the Eskdale Valley and gaze in awe at Scafell Pike.
There's also a railway museum at the terminus.
Offering all kinds of special events from rhododendron tours to
medieval weekends, another big attraction is Muncaster Castle and
you can walk or cycle here from your Ravenglass cottage along the
Eskdale Cycle Trail. Ancient seat of the Pennington Family, browse
exquisite rooms, roam glorious gardens, view over 100 species of
big-eyed beauties at the World Owl Trust and let the kids shrink to
size with Max in the Meadowvole Maze.
What else? Play golf or walk the coastal path. Sample the
Queen's favourite sausages and hams in nearby Waberthwaite. Or
admire the wonders of nature at Eskmeals Dunes, Drigg Dunes Nature
Reserve and Stanley Ghyll Force.
For a mix of historic and natural wonders, a Ravenglass cottage
certainly fits the bill.
