in and around this historic town in Cumbria's Upper Eden
Valley.
Follow the Town Trail and find cobbled corners, old buildings,
Market Square, the bull ring, Frank's Bridge, old cloisters and
a fine church known as the 'Cathedral of the Dales'.
Discover underground passages once used as refuge during Scottish
raids. Stumble upon lots of places to eat and a range of
interesting shops including antiques and curios.
Rural pastures and wild uplands surround the town, dotted with
prehistoric settlements, impressive Norman castles and Roman forts.
Look out for the castles of Croglam (the biggest prehistoric
earthwork in the area), Brougham, Lammerside, Brough and Pendragon
(of King Arthur fame) situated in the spectacular Mallerstang

the Lady Anne Clifford Westmoreland Heritage Trail.
For lovers of outdoor pursuits, choose from eleven long-distance
trails and cycle-ways, including Wainwright's Coast to Coast
path. The town is proud of its 'Walkers are Welcome'
status. Riding is equally popular, with pony trekking and trail
riding along a network of bridleways. Or do something different and
go paragliding - the fells around your Kirkby Stephen cottage offer
some of the best sites in the UK. There are also four nature
reserves such as Ewbank Scar (accessible by footpath from town) and
Smardale Gill.
