Norfolk Cottage Holidays

Just show me Norfolk Cottages

One of the driest and sunniest regions of the UK, Norfolk has vast stretches of fine, sandy beach, abundant natural wildlife and a relatively isolated location, making it a first-class destination for a truly get-away-from-it-all break. The lack of direct motorway access through East Anglia only enhances its credentials at the place to get out into the fresh air and way off the beaten track. A Norfolk cottage holiday opens the door to seaside fun at established coastal resorts such as Cromer, Hunstanton and Great Yarmouth; historic buildings and ancient abbeys, such as those at Wymondham or Norwich; nature reserves and beautiful gardens; picturesque rural villages and compact cities such as King's Lynn, and the unique environment that is the stunning, serene Norfolk Broads.

Many holidaymakers booking a Norfolk cottage head for the county's wide range of coastal resorts. Even during the peak holiday season, Norfolk's beaches remain relatively quiet, and with a little effort it is still possible to find yourself your own, unspoilt stretch of sand. Old Hunstanton, on the county's north coast, has a glorious stretch of sand dotted with red and white beach huts and backed by towering dunes. Further along the coast, discover delightful seaside towns, such as Brancaster, with its bustling harbour teeming with fishing vessels landing the daily catch of crayfish, crab and lobster. In Victorian times, nearby Cromer was the resort on the north Norfolk coast. Today, this fine town is a bustling holiday centre during the summer season with a famous pier, wide stretches of sandy beach ideal for families and a good range of shops and services. Neighbouring Sheringham, Holt and Weybourne offer excellent beaches, while Great Yarmouth is the largest of the resorts along this part of the coast. For a quintessential seaside resort town with plenty of golden sand and everything to keep the children entertained, it makes a great base for a Norfolk cottage holiday. The wider Great Yarmouth area boasts no less than fifteen miles of fine sandy beach, extending from Winterton in the north to Hopton in the south, while the town's Golden Mile is a jumble of fun fair rides, arcades, slot machines, candyfloss and ice cream stands, and horse-drawn and high-tech rides, offering family thrills and spills galore. Lowestoft and Southwold also offer the traditional beside-the-sea experience for those looking for a seaside Norfolk cottage.

Norfolk offers much more than just sea and sand. For an altogether different break, experience the tranquillity of a Norfolk cottage holiday at the heart of the Norfolk Broads; a vast network of rivers, lakes, nature reserves, marshes and bird sanctuaries in the eastern part of the county. Interesting towns and villages abound in the Broads area, and a Norfolk cottage in this part of the region allows exploration of miles of unspoilt, lock-free waterways, since many barges and boats may be rented by the day or the afternoon. The scenery changes little throughout the region, but the ecology of the area is unique, and for a slow pace of life and 'get away from it all' sensation, the Broads is a captivating part of the country.

Nature lovers will find a Norfolk cottage holiday a truly rewarding experience. Bird watchers are drawn to the area, which is rich in RSPB sites; those at Cley Marshes Nature Reserve, Blakeney, Titchwell and Snettisham Reserves are just a fraction of those found in the region. Gardeners too will find a host of fabulous places to visit; gardens at Hoveton near Wroxham or the Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden on the Norfolk Broads are just two of the many fine examples, and the famous, fragrant purple carpets of lavender at Cayley Mill near Heacham are not to be missed.

Those holidaying with children will find Norfolk an excellent destination, with a whole host of child-friendly visitor attractions in addition to the enduring appeal of the seaside. There are miniature railways, such as those at Lynnsport, near King's Lynn, and the North Norfolk Railway near Sheringham; numerous Farm Parks like Snettisham near King's Lynn; the Dinosaur Adventure Park between Norfolk and Fakenham; Banham Zoo or Hunstanton's Sealife Sanctuary. For an active Norfolk cottage holiday, then the Norfolk Coastal Path heads through a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, whilst the flat terrain of the fens makes the Norfolk Coastal Cycleway a scenic, yet not overly taxing, way to explore the county by bike. Bouddica's Way offers additional rambling opportunity, starting in the picturesque village of Diss, and Thetford Forest Park is a veritable outdoor playground. A vast expanse of managed forest on the edge of the pretty market town of Thetford, the Park has plenty of discovery trails, a high ropes course, adventure playground, cycle routes and a giant sculpture trail.

History remains alive in the buildings and monuments of Norfolk's towns and villages, and in the fine country estates dotted throughout the region. A Norfolk cottage holiday affords you the freedom to discover them at your own pace. Visit Somerleyton Hall near Great Yarmouth, the National Trust's Fellbrigg Hall near Cromer, Blicking Hall - reputedly haunted by the ghost of Anne Boleyn, near Norwich - or Sandringham House, summer residence of the Royal family. See the famous Christian shrine at Walsingham, Norwich's castle and cathedral, Castle Rising Anglo-Norman fort near King's Lynn, or beautiful Wymondham Abbey. In the wider East Anglia region, a full day is easily spent amid the soaring spires of the University town of Cambridge.

A Norfolk cottage holiday makes an ideal choice for a weekend break, as well as amply filling the requirements for a main family summer holiday. Norfolk cottages around the coastal resorts offer everything you might expect from a traditional English seaside holiday but with less in the way of crowds and traffic, whilst the unspoilt beauty of the Norfolk Broads can be readily enjoyed from our hand picked collection of East Anglia holiday homes. Your Norfolk cottage - whether it be a character property for a romantic retreat or a large Norfolk holiday home near the coast - will provide a home from home in this most tranquil and unspoilt of regions.
