A small city with a bubbly personality - that's what you get when you book a Ripon cottage. Just north of Harrogate in the Yorkshire Dales, it's a great spot for walkers, as well as lovers of history and culture.
Join a guided tour or follow your nose. You'll soon come across the big market square where, every night at 9pm, you can witness the ancient ritual of 'setting the watch' by the famous Horn-blower.
By day the square bustles with traders and shoppers, with weekly markets, specialist farmers' markets and regular craft fairs. Shops range from boutiques to high street names and there are some fabulous galleries like Hornseys.
Hungry? From pizza and pasta to Yorkshire pudding and gravy, there's a great variety of places to eat and drink, as well as takeaways for relaxing, no-cook evenings at your Ripon cottage.
Pride of place goes to Ripon Cathedral, with its medieval architecture and intricate woodcarvings. Next, three fascinating Yorkshire Law & Order Museums. Just a few miles away, the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Gardens.
