Almost stopped in time, Warkworth is a true gem, snuggled within a tight bend of the River Coquet atop a rocky outcrop. Whichever way you approach, the spectacular Warkworth Castle crowns the landscape for miles around.
Once settled into your Warkworth holiday cottage, enjoy a leisurely stroll around the village. Delightful shops, eateries, pubs and galleries line the main street; though it's hard to stop looking at that castle, ever present on the horizon. Indeed, it's one of England's finest fortresses, with extensive remains of a great hall, chapel, gatehouse and ring of towered walls, mainly dating from the late 14th Century.
Upstream across the river is another historic treasure, the Warkworth Hermitage - a medieval cave housing evidence of a chapel, confessional and dormitory. Other interesting spots include the church and Norman Bridge.
A twenty minute walk brings you to the coast. Warkworth lies within the coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a stopping point on both the Coast and Castles National Cycle Route and St. Oswald's Way, a long distance walking path.
At the coast, you'll find a gorgeous stretch of sandy beach, picnic area and a car park. There's also a challenging 9-hole links course, with magnificent views along the coast and over to Coquet Island, an RSPB Nature Reserve.
Many other attractions are within an easy drive such as The Alnwick Garden, Cragside Estate and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
