We all know the same old sight of seeing chain restaurants and cafes dominating our high streets, taking away the local spirit and saturating the hearts of our beloved towns and cities. Well, Gloucester is one of those rare examples of being home to many great independent places to eat and drink symbolising local efforts to reclaim that sense of community, which is why we are providing you with 5 of the most unique and quirky cafes in Gloucester.

Comfy Pew

Located in the heart of Gloucester, Comfy Pew is a family-run café serving local food to local people since 1975. Over the years Comfy Pew, which is situated in a charming Tudor building, has adjusted to the times by transforming the menu to include contemporary dishes whilst still keeping an element of good ol’ hearty traditional meals.

It’s the perfect spot to grab a light bite or warming home-cooked meal whilst resting after exploring the incredible city of Gloucester. In the summer months, when the weather wants to behave, you can sit outside (although not on nearly anything as cool as the pews on the inside) and bask in the glorious British sunshine.

Café on the cut

Hop on board Café on the Cut, a truly remarkable and unique café, located directly on the water. After many years of living on a narrowboat, the owner decided to seize the opportunity and combine her love of boats and food to create the ultimate café. Serving delicious delights from freshly prepared lunches to delicious homemade cakes.

The atmosphere isn’t the only friendly thing going, Café on the Cut uses only locally sourced foods and recycled packaging, as well as having solar panels to operate the café (pretty good going eh).

On Toast

It really is as simple as it seems. Everything served in this quirky café, located right by the water overlooking Gloucester Docks, is on toast. Take your taste buds on a journey around the world with the wonderful selection of toasties. From a traditional Italian mozzarella and fresh basil to a gourmet, Moroccan minted lamb and natural yoghurt, a delectable Canadian brie and bacon or fiery Welsh dragon with cheese, leeks and tabasco sauce, the choice is yours.

And before you leave, watch out for the unexpected twist. Desert toasties… Aside from the locally famous mars bar toastie, feast your eyes on the mega banoffee surprise with banana and a mars bar thrown in for pleasure. We know it’s not the conventional dessert menu you were thinking, but with a café name like so, don’t knock it until you try.
