With all the excitement and focus on the forthcoming Jubilee weekend, it’s easy to forget that half term is next week too. Although the weather is forecast is unpredictable, we can all keep our fingers crossed for more of the sunshine and hot weather that we have been basking in during the last couple of weeks.
The June half term is a fantastic time to take advantage of lower prices than in the main summer holidays and get away for a break with the kids. It feels like a long time since the long weekends of Easter and still a while to go until the big summer holiday and quality family time is often in short supply. If the kids are stressed with revision for forthcoming exams, a change of scenery could be just the thing to leave them recharged and ready for a few tough weeks ahead.
The Lake District is a great place for a family holiday. There are many different types of cottage available in the Lake District whether you fancy a short break or a full week away. The peace and serenity of the area makes it a good place to go and get away from it all and enjoy some down time. Famous for its walking, there are walking routes suitable for all ages from demanding climbs to gentle lakeside walks. The picturesque towns of Keswick and Ambleside with their beautiful quaint shops and cafe’s are perfect for an afternoon saunter round too.
For those who fancy something a little more active, the Lake District is full of thrill seeking activities to help you let off a little steam. From Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre on Lake Windermere you can go waterskiing as well as hire canoes, kayaks, motor boats to name but a few.
If you would prefer to stay on dry land but still fancy a thrill, there is a great place for bike riding at Grizedale Forest with many different routes, suitable for all ages. There is a bike shop from which you can hire almost every type of bike possible, from full suspension bikes, suitable for serious riding, to kid’s bikes and tag along additions so smaller children can join in too.
If you fancy a cottage holiday, Wales is a fantastic option as it is packed with family friendly things to do. Llandudno is a great place for little children. From the traditional Punch and Judy shows on the promenade, to a paddle in the sea and a ride on one of the fairground rides on the pier, small children will be in their element. For bigger kids, the Ski and Snowboard Centre at the Great Orme is a great day out and is also home to the longest toboggan run in Britain.
Portmeirion further down the North Wales coast is a stunning tourist village built in the style of an Italian village. The grounds around the village are home to vast collection of rhododendrons and other exotic plants in a stunning setting making Portmeirion a top tourist attraction.
If retail therapy is more your thing, a quick hop across the Welsh border to Cheshire Oaks near Chester, the UK’s largest outlet center is a must for all label lovers.
