A Scottish cottage holiday in the vicinity of Grantown on Spey offers amenities and attractions as well as proximity to the vast, natural playground of the stunning Cairngorm National Park, one of only two National Parks in Scotland. A pleasant town on the banks of the river Spey, some fourteen miles south of Aviemore, winter visitors flock here for skiing when the snow is good, whilst in summer the region is a superb base for walkers, wildlife lovers, cyclists and any one looking to experience the peace, beauty and wide open spaces of the Scottish Highlands. One of Strathspey’s principal visitor attractions is the Scottish Whisky Trail, taking in a variety of specialist producers from household names like Glenfiddich to smaller, specialist distilleries. Visit in spring or autumn and you’ll be treated to the town’s whisky festivals, with a host of fun, family attractions, local traditions and tasting opportunities.

A mile beyond town, the Revack Estate and Adventure Park offers something for everyone; there is a children’s adventure centre, garden centre, walks, shopping and more on this large estate. Neighbouring attractions include the Strathspey Steam Railway, which runs a circular route from Aviemore calling at popular Highland towns such as Boat of Garten and Broomhill. The Rothiemurchus Estate, brought to the small screen in the popular BBC TV series, Monarch of the Glen, is also within easy reach by car. There are in excess of fifty miles of managed forest and loch-side trails to discover, as well as rainbow trout fishing, Land Rover tours, archery, pony trekking, gorge walking and much more. Also close by, at the foot of Cairngorm mountain, Glenmore Forest Park has plenty to keep visitors busy; here you’ll find the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre and the Loch Morlich Watersports Centre, as well as forest walks, a sandy beach and plenty of space for picnics and family fun. At nearby Kincraig, enjoy a wildlife-spotting boat trip out onto serene Loch Insh, and get up close to resident Osprey who have made the region their home. Golfers will enjoy the challenge of two courses in Grantown on Spey.

The nearby town of Carrbridge has some unusual claims to fame as well as being home to one of Scotland’s leading visitor attractions. In this interesting village, the first to be developed for Cairngorms skiing, you’ll find the oldest stone packhorse bridge in the country, as well as an eclectic collection of festivals and events. The nation’s national dish is preserved every year at the National Porridge Championships, whilst the Open Chainsaw Carving Championships vies with the Live Arts festival for publicity. The Landmark Forest Adventure Park is the ideal day out for families, featuring water slides, a tree top trail, adventure parks, shopping and much more amid acres of space among ancient Caledonian pine forest.
