Whist staying in a holiday cottage visit picturesque Ledbury. Tucked away in southeastern Herefordshire, close to the borders with both Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, is a handsome country town, which, with its half-timbered houses and bustling weekly markets, has something quintessentially ‘Olde-England’ about it.

Ensure to make your first stop the Tourist Office; apart from the advice on days out and family fun, the superb, half-timbered building, set high on stilts, is worth a visit in its own right. The diminutive Butcher’s Row House Museum houses a collection of Victoriana, whilst Tinsmith’s is worth seeking out. Once the place to take pots or pans to be repaired, this charming building has had new life breathed into it, and now is a thriving centre for bespoke textiles, vintage goods and for showcasing the local arts and crafts scene. Visit the Heritage Centre; after admiring the lovely black and white houses in Ledbury and the surrounding area, this is the place to try your own hand at a spot of timber framing.

Close to town, the delightfully-named village of Much Marcle is home to Hellens, a thirteenth century home and gardens, packed with stories and secrets straight out of the history books. A knot garden and newly laid labyrinth will keep children entertained, whilst Weston’s Cider Mill also makes a great family day out. See the cider production in process, from planting to pouring, and enjoy dray rides, the Traditional and Rare Breeds Farm, gardens, children’s playground and tearooms. Locally, fairytale Eastnor Castle, Deer Park & Arboretum, is a must, set in a stunning area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Malvern Hills. The arboretum is a splendid sight, the Knight’s maze and children’s trails through the grounds are great for younger visitors and the castle interior, brimful of Italian fine art works, mediaeval suits of armour and intricate tapestries, is filled with treasures.
