Pwllheli is the largest town and unofficial capital of the Lleyn peninsula and is a great place to visit on a cottage holiday. Pwllheli is a busy market town which has greatly benefited from a new marina in recent years, making it, along with nearby Abersoch, a magnet for sailing enthusiasts. Markets are held on Wednesdays, and the town offers a good range of shops and services for holidaymakers. There are two main beaches, shingly South Beach, which extends from town in the direction of Llanbedrog, and Glan y Mor, by the marina. It is worth heading out of town along the beach, as the often-muddy flats give way to sandy stretches as you head further towards the Pen y Chain headland.

The popular beaches at bustling Abersoch and Aberdaron, on the end of the peninsula, are just a few miles away, and there are many good walks among the rolling countryside of the Lleyn peninsula to be enjoyed in the area. The area is also popular with bird watchers, who flock to visit tiny Bardsey Island, an ancient site of pilgrimage off the coast of the peninsula, for the rich variety of sea and nesting birds. Further around the headland, on the north coast of the Lleyn, the small resort resort of Nefyn is just a short drive from Pwllheli, with lovely sandy beaches around the resort itself and neighbouring Morfa Nefyn. There are some good places to eat and some excellent walks with, in good weather, fabulous panoramic views.
