When questioned Greg responded that on-one ever uses the freezer but he did remove some ice blocks but left all the food? The parking was inadequate as our car was damaged by a delivery van reversing. The TV remote did not work which meant it was difficult to control. Finally a more comfortable sofa would have made our visit slightly more comfortable - we left 2 days early due to this. Generally the cottage was adequate and we will probably rebook in 2024.

Initially, before entering there it a bad pot hole and I stumbled on that, but the big let down for us was the shower. No grab rail to hold on to and the shower tray was like an ice rink. Nor was for there provision for soap of shampoo within the unit, Having said all that the rest was absolutely first class.

Our thanks to Carol and Gregg for making our stay Just that …they had thought of everything that one could need on a break away . The cottage was very clean and lovely and warm and lots of hot water too …always important .. Stanton By Dale is a very pretty village and we enjoyed meals in the Stanhope Arms , made to feel very welcome there . From Stanton By Dale it’s easy to visit tourist attractions via the M1 .. Would recommend Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall … We visited Kedleston again on this visit but did some of the parkland for a nice walk . In Ilkeston you have Tesco for essentials…easy to find .. There is plenty of space which was a bonus as we both had some work to do and could find 2 work spaces. The kitchen had everything we needed and more, although we did choose to eat at the 2 local pubs plus an amazing Indian restaurant called Lime on the outskirts of Nottingham. The staff in both pubs are very welcoming and the food is good value. On fine days we enjoyed the circular walks from the village and one by the Erewash and Nottingham canals. The log fire was a bonus in the evenings. The cottage is excellent value at the time we visited and the owner is very helpful if you need anything. She agreed to send on an item we had left and did this within 24 hours. We would highly recommend this holiday cottage and the village of Stanton by Dale and hope to return in the future.

We were rather curious as to why there was a very visible mouse trap under the kitchen unit. We were soon to discover why. A family of mice had decided they were safe and warm as we were in the kitchen. On the Sunday morning the trap had been actioned with a large mouse well and truly caught. This continued a further four times. The owners (Carol and Greg) were helpful and sympathetic. They set more traps on the Wednesday evening, arranging pest control to visit as well. We had decided to leave a day early due to this issue as it had put rather blighted the weeks' holiday.

We are sorry that Peter felt he had to leave a day early. However, it has to be pointed out that we were alerted to the problem late on the day before they were to leave . Had we have known earlier we could have taken immediate action to prevent further incursions. As it turned out we managed to arrange for a specialist to visit the property and deal with the problem on the day they left. With appropriate action now taken we fully expect that the problem has been solved and future guests can enjoy Lavender Cottage to the full. Property Owner

(Just one small issue - the shower water leaks all over the bathroom floor.) Lovely location in a pretty village surrounded by fields. Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

Im afraid because the bathroom ceiling slopes down its the longest shower screen we could fit and therefore if not careful water is readily deflected through the shower opening. I do provide a shower mat to lay on the floor. A lot of old cottages have round edged ceilings. Property Owner

However the beds were really uncomfortable, one was really squashy unacceptable for back sufferers the other a cheap mattress with little or no springs also very uncomfortable. The sofa and armchair in the sitting room were uncomfortable to sit on impossible for a back sufferer like my wife. This experience leads us to question Sykes cottages criteria for checking out properties to make sure they are up to standard or at least to add in the description that the beds are of varying quality and that the sofa and armchair might be fine for some people but not suitable for back sufferers. We regret that we did not see the earlier review before booking, as it was correct in its criticism.

  • "The cottage location was very good."

The decor was fine but not the contents. As with all similar holidays we have experienced, from a variety of suppliers, there were no sharp bread knives and in this one , no bread board either. Likewise the sofa and arm chair were ancient and uncomfortable. But worse of all, the freezer was full of the owners left over food in plastic containers ( the owner retrieved a rhubarb crumble from said freezer whilst we were there! ), the chest of drawers were full of old towels . There was no wardrobe in the second bedroom though plenty of room for one. Our wardrobe had two duvets jammed in it and two suits in it etc… the kitchen had a 1977 slow cooker and a garlic peeler but only 6 odd cups for three of us to use? There were photos of the owners in the downstairs rooms = it was like being watched. So ideal location but it felt like someone else was living there and had just popped out.

There was a comment regarding the harpness of the knives. We will check them and ensure they are sharpened. There is a wooden bread board in the kitchen drawer and also a glass chopping board for easy clean. There are plenty of mugs in the kitchen cupboard and a full Eternal Bow tea and dinner service with serving dishes in the sideboard so the comment about there being only 6 ODD cups is misleading. These cups all match the mugs. I did knock politely on the door and ask for the crumble I had made for a party I was having and explained I thought it was in my own freezer. As for the towels in the chest of drawers these are all in good clean condition and not old so we cannot understand this comment. The settee and chair are in good clean condition and so we were surprised by this observation. There is ample room in the freezer for the use by our guests and we put bread peas etc for our guests to use. Also in the kitchen cupboards we leave staple items like salt pepper vinegar rice etc for guest use. We are sorry our photos offend these can be easily reversed though nobody else has commented on this. Perhaps you should have looked at our beautiful watercolour paintings adorning the walls instead. There is no room in the second bedroom for a wardrobe as most ladies enjoy the dressing table and mirror but there is hanging space on a purpose built appliance attached to the wall for light items such as shirts and trousers. There is also plenty of hanging space in the main bedroom together with a thicker duvet in case this is needed. The slow cooker is vintage but it still works. I like to have a mix of new and old in a 220 year old cottage. It is a 2 bedroom cottage and most people would appreciate that space is limited. We have since replaced a brand new sofa. The cottage itself is beautiful and comfortably appointed, leaving us wanting for nothing. There was plenty on hand to entertain a nearly-toddler and enough space to keep us all happy when the weather was bad! The location was quiet and pleasant and we enjoyed wandering the village, finding paths, playgrounds and meeting horses! Only comment is as previous reviews have mentioned the TV signal is poor on a lot of channels so I recommend bringing a Firestick/similar device with you.

We really enjoyed the time away from home. 2 pubs within easy walking distance with a good selection of food. There are plenty of attractions within an hours drive. We predominantly went to go walking which we did every day. If we went there again which is a good possibility I would take a firestick with me as the TV signal was pretty poor, pixelating a lot and often so we ended up watching the dvds that were in the cottage.

Thank you for a perfect score and admit we do have slight problems with the TV signal at times in the village. So pleased there is a good possibility you will return one day. Property Owner

Also the freezer was full with the owners own food. Luckily we eat out most nights and bought fresh food for the fridge. It’s not a criticism and did not affect our stay as we had a great time. Would certainly recommend.

Thank you for a good score. We decided rather than have a wardrobe in the second bedroom its nice for the ladies to have a dressing table and chair. There is a wall hanging space for a few lighter items. The food in the freezer is for holidaymakers to help themselves too. Just a few staple items in the cupboard also. I hate taking salt vinegar etc. on holiday with me or having to buy everything when you get there to take home. Thank you also for your good recommendation. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was lovely, clean and presentable."

The only real issue we had was the bed was so soft I could not sleep well on the first night so I had to move to the smaller harder bed in the early hours which is why two lots of bedding were used! I don't suppose there is anything that can be done apart from me should ask before we book about the beds :) Also it would have been very helpful to have had somewhere to put toiletries whilst having a shower. Just a very small point - I could not find any wines glasses apart from plastic ones. Overall the cottage was good. We were particularly happy with how clean it was. Sue and Brian Myrie

It is very hard to satisfy people with bed comfort.....some like softer squashy beds and some liking a hard bed, everyone is different. That is why we chose on of each. I usually put my toiletries on the corners of the shower tray. Lots of various glasses in the sideboard of the lounge, fewer in the kitchen cupboards because of lack of space . The plastic wine glasses were for outside. They have been removed now. I wish you had contacted me whilst you stayed there and I could have sorted you out. Property Owner

About the location

STANTON BY DALE, DERBYSHIRE

Nottingham 7.5 miles; Derby 8.7 miles; Loughborough 15.3 miles

This small village and civil parish lies in the South East of Derbyshire. This quaint village retains its unspoilt charm. The Stanhope Arms and the Chequers Inn are the two watering holes situated within the village. During the second world war, there was a shortage of barbers in the local area, so the landlord used to cut customers’ hair, while they enjoyed a refreshing pint or two! A deep history surrounding the past industrialisation of the area lies at the Stanton Ironworks company, which in the 1960's joined with Staveley Ironworks, together housing 7,000 workers manufacturing manhole covers and concrete street lamps. Also in the village, there is a plaque commemorating aviation pioneer Hugh Oswald Short who, with his two brothers, built some of the first British aircraft in history. There are charming cottages, almshouses, a traditional parish church and village hall, cricket ground and even a medieval cross overlooking a village green. The city of Nottingham is nearby, with a vibrant culture centred on its rich heritage and sporting glory. See live performances, excellent sport, nightlife and art in a series of venues, with Michelin star restaurants and high street shopping to indulge in. Derby lies to the west of the village, on the banks of the River Derwent, hosting a wealth of arts, culture and history, as well as festivals and events on throughout the year. The Peak District offers walking and outdoor activities in abundance, along with delightful market towns and villages to be explored.
