  • "What a lovely property."

We felt at home straightaway. Ivy Cottage was very comfortable and clean. We enjoyed the view from the back garden. The location is perfect for visiting places. We hadn't expected the Christmas tree and big garland - what a lovely surprise. The only minor issues we had were: Internet wasn't great and the back door lock was tricky to lock. There are places we want to revisit and we will definitely consider Ivy Cottage first. Black Horse out was very good and friendly as well.

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ivy Cottage."

It is very placed to visit numerous local attractions and has great walks nearby . The cottage was very well equipped, lovely and warm at this time of the year and perfect for two couples and our dogs. We found the garden to be extensive with lovely views over the countryside and perfect for our dogs. The Black Horse pub virtually on the doorstep is a great bonus. We certainly will return.

  • "The description “dog friendly” is in accurate."

Dogs were not allowed upstairs or on furniture. Garden only partially enclosed. No bulbs in the outside security lights - not ideal when letting dogs out when night falls! Description should read dog allowed with restrictions. When paying £25 per dog (we have 2) so an extra £50 charge we wouldn’t have expected these restrictions. The conservatory is dilapidated with no lights for reading in the evenings. The rest of the cottage is fine. Last point which isn’t mentioned, is only road side parking outside cottage and it’s a BUSY road!

Thankyou for your feedback, always good to hear what guests have to say. Seems like the cottage met your expectation which is good, Regards your issue with the pet friendliness of the cottage there are so many reasons why we prefer pet exclusion from upstairs and the bedrooms. We are happy for pets to use furniture all we request is that towels or blankets are used to safeguard surfaces. Agree that the conservatory needs some external maintenance and whilst there is no fixed lighting there are two portable standard lamps available for use throughout the property. Garden is completely enclosed but we do advise supervision of pets because of some lower level walls. Roadside parking is stated on our amenities page, agree that the road is busy at this time of year, farm traffic at harvest time. Sorry if these issues detracted from the quality of your stay, we do how ever, actively encourage guests to inform us immediately of any problems so that we can attempt to rectify them as soon as is practicably possible. • "Getting a bit tired, high ratings must be historic."

Garden over grown (8ft nettles flopping over the lawn at face height for children). Overall not bad, but would not recommend to friends/family.

Sorry that you feel we fell short of meeting your expectations and find it difficult to understand your poor ratings on comfort and cleanliness? At Ivy Cottage we actively encourage guests to inform us immediately of any problems so that we can rectify them as soon as is practicably possible. Taken on board your comments about the nettles and children and will look at resolving that issue, the majority of the garden is well maintained, however the boundaries are purposely given over to nature to accommodate wildlife and our resident hedgehogs. Regards the musty smell, can't understand that, the property was thoroughly aired and cleaned prior to your arrival??? • "Need to sort location description out it's not north Yorkshire it's county Durham."

Very misleading showing north Yorkshire attractions. Cottage and owners excellent.

Thanks for your feedback, yes we are in Durham, unfortunately the North Yorkshire listing is the way Sykes choose to advertise our property. This is something we are not happy with and have brought this matter to their attention many times in the past and will do so again as a result of your feedback. We are actually situated within 5 miles of the North Yorkshire border and to put it in context, only a 25 minute drive from the popular North Yorkshire market town of Richmond. As owners we attempt to prevent any confusion by ensuring that all the information on our advertising page reflects that we are indeed in County Durham and highlights the attractions local to the area both in Teesdale, South Durham and North Yorks with mention of wider attractions in North Durham and North Yorkshire Property Owner

  • "A lovely place to stay."

The cottage is cosy and in a nice little village. For dog owners, there is a playing field not far away (over the road, near the church). A couple of minor housekeeping notes: The kitchen lighting seems a bit dull and the bulb in the dining area went and we couldn't find any spares in the cottage. Minor things that didn't really detract that much from our stay.

  • "Ivy Cottage was outstanding."

It was such a great base to explore the surrounding areas. The owners were just wonderful and so helpful and there was so much information available about the area. I met Sean, who was just lovely and although we didn't get to meet Helen, we did love her artwork about the house. The decor was lovely with pieces of furniture and woodwork lovingly painted and the arty flare flowed throughout the cottage. I'd read some slightly negative reviews about the sofas not being comfy but we all felt very much at home and extremely comfortable. Barnard Castle was lovely as was Saltburn-by-the-sea. Goathland was an hour away and we visited twice. There was a lovely welcome pack and a jug of milk and lovely cakes waiting for us and if you need doggy sitters, be sure to call the owners who are only too happy to help. We stayed for 2 weeks and would have happily stayed longer. We even had days where we stayed in and just soaked up the countryside views to the rear with a pot of tea. The kitchen is really well equipped. My little one loved the 'bee garden' out the back and again you can see the love and art that has gone into everything there. There are some fantastic walks to the rear. The beds and pillows were very comfy. We go away almost every month and like to travel and see new places with an inquisitive toddler but we've never experienced tears of sadness at leaving, like we did here. We will definitely be back, hopefully in the Spring for more adventures. We didn't try the local pub for food as we were too cozy in the Ivy but the chippy at Saltburn was nice near the pier. The other one by the big car park wasn't very good. Any little gripes made by other guests about Ivy Cottage, were in my opinion unjust and just plain picky. There's even a torch for the dog walks under the sink. From somebody who stays with Sykes at least a week a month, I can honestly say this was by far the nicest to date. I'd love to see more of Helen's artwork next time adorning the walls. P.s the dogs said thank you for their treats you left too.. think we've found our future regular stay-cation.

thank you so very much for your glowing praise and positive feedback. We work extremely hard at Ivy to provide a quality holiday break for our guests and it is hugely satisfying to know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to provide your feedback, we sincerely hope that you will stay with us again. Property Owner

Many thanks for such a well supplied kitchen You will probably see us again Regards from the York lot !

Thank you for your positive feedback, it's great for us to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and would love to welcome you back again in the future. Unfortunately, the fly problem was widespread throughout the village, guess it must be due to the uncommonly warm summer. It was neat and tidy and not too fussy which suited us fine. The large TV was a welcome bonus for the two children! The children loved the bunk beds too. We appreciated the rear garden. A nice private area to sit in and enjoy the sun and the view - even saw a squirrel! The village of Ingleton is ideally sited for visiting numerous towns, villages and tourist spots in the area. And it's an easy run to Darlington if you want a larger town to visit. We thought that the road side parking may be a problem but it wasn't.... just need to be careful. Wonderful Italian meal at the close by Black Horse pub, highly recommended. I am sure we would visit again.

Lovely flowers and fruit pies, tea and coffee left for our arrival, little dog treat bags for our two canine boys too. We used a supermarket delivery on the eve of our arrival to save packing tons of stuff, plus it meant we didn’t need to rush out to the shops. The kitchen was well equipped and well used by us, the cottage warm, spacious and comfortable, had the best nights sleep in the bed, wanted to pack it up and take it back with me! Huge TV in the living room made for great family cinema nights of an evening all snuggled on big, comfy sofas. The hot tub was a welcome addition after a day out with the kids! The children enjoyed ‘spooky Halloween baths’ before bed with the blue light on in the bathroom and glow in the dark bugs in the large corner bath upstairs! Location of the house is great for visiting local attractions (we went to Thorp Perrow, Barnard Castle, Lightwater Valley, Head of Steam and Hamsterley Forest whilst there), the pub just a couple of minutes walk from the front door serving lovely food was a bonus. If the cottage could benefit from anything, it would be a standard lamp in the living room behind the sofa near the window for reading - that’s literally it, everything else we needed was there, would recommend staying here and would definitely stay again.

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave your lovely feedback, we do appreciate it and look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Property Owner

Absolutely everything you need for a great stay. Lovely rooms, large and spacious, great facilities and hot tub if you want it. Very sweet, well maintained garden with a bench overlooking the countryside beyond. Great and secure for the dog. Wonderful walks just outside the door, but equally so many great places to explore too. Historic castles all around. Shops, pubs and fuel within a few miles of the cottage. WiFi was offline for 2days, TV not working in main bedroom, no handset in second bedroom, hot tub time restrictions. Just feel owner needs to back off a bit about charges, it works both way after all as it is a holiday cottage, just made us feel slightly uncomfortable. It is well equipped, clean and tidy and in an excellent location for exploring the local area. All rooms are of a good size and the cottage is clearly well cared for by the owners, who were friendly and approachable. There have been a couple of comments about the comfort of the sofas - we found them to be fine. The garden is spectacular, peaceful and with stunning views. We were lucky with the weather and really enjoying sitting outside in such a fab space. Beds were comfortable, showers were hot and had great water pressure, kitchen was really well equipped with plenty of items that matched. Sykes cottages did not always respond to emails and the website is clunky, so there is work to do there, but in terms of the cottage and the holiday we had there, we were very happy.

  • "We absolutely loved this spacious and beautiful cottage."

It was a real home from home with everything that we needed to make our stay a happy one. The little touches to make it more welcoming and were really appreciated. The home made apple pies were delicious and the gratis, teas, coffees and mini milks were also great. The puppy really enjoyed his treats too :o) The garden is beautifully kept and the views stunning - we did a lot of meditating in the mornings and it was the perfect place to do it. Really comfy beds. The sofas in the living room are hard as rock so we spent most of our stay in the conservatory which is a real gem especially when it rained as it meant we still felt close to the garden. The Wifi worked well and there is Netflix on the TV. A few pointers (nothing to put you off; just so you are aware) - The hot tub isn't quite the experience we had hoped for (we couldn't manage to get the temperature up as it wasn't switched on properly, and it was uncomfortable to sit in once we got it going) - however, the owner did come as soon as we asked for help and sorted the temp for us quickly. A few Tupper containers would be helpful for picnics on walks and more ice trays would have been appreciated. The village is really lovely, and there are loads of walks from the village, so you don't have to drive anywhere to enjoy the scenery. We did go to High force, which is really worth a short drive (25 minutes). The Black Horse Pub (5 minutes walk) do really nice meals and is run by good, friendly people. The nearest shop, that we found, is in the next village and is ok for essentials but isn't cheap, So we would advise taking your essentials with you. We loved our stay and we cannot recommend it enough - thank you Juliet

  • "Great house with lovely rooms and garden."

Would just mention to double check the location of this cottage if you're looking to be close to the Yorkshire Dales - this is not the correct Ingleton! However, we still enjoyed our holiday as there is still plenty to do in and around this smaller, more remote Ingleton. The hosts were lovely and ensured we could use the hot tub during our stay. There were plenty of towels to use and the showers worked very well. The views are stunning from the back garden! The hosts even left some lovely apple pies for us when we arrived! Just a few notes for the owners really - would be good to have some scales in the kitchen as we bought ingredients to do some baking and were unable to measure them. The farthest hob switch also does not work and if used, will actually trip the wiring in the whole house, needing it to be reset at the box. This needs to be fixed. None of the doors locked which wasn't ideal for us - especially on the toilets. There were flies everywhere when we arrived and they stayed throughout the trip, which wasn't pleasant. However, I'm sure some sticky fly paper or an electric fly zapper would solve this. There was also a chocolate bar wrapper on the floor of the bunk bed room when we arrived. The bin outside was full to the brim when we arrived. We had nowhere to put our rubbish. The internet was also very patchy. Most of the time it didn't work at all and we had to use our 4G. When it did work, it was only in one small corner of the kitchen. This wasn't ideal for work zoom calls and keeping in touch with our families. Lastly, we had until 10:30am to leave the property and at around 10:15am people came in to clean. They were lovely but would've been nice if we had the chance to do a last check round the property to check if we forgot anything. Would still recommend this cottage to people looking for a dog-friendly, remote holiday to spend up north. The pub down the road is amazing. Would recommend the High Force / Low Force waterfall walk and Raby Castle. Thank you for our stay.
