  • "Very pleasant view, the property is very tired and needs a lot of attention."

We had rain coming in from the roof running down the wall by the fireplace, just glad it didn’t go in the wall sockets. The dishwasher was rusty in places inside and when you pulled out the drawers they came off the runners. It would have been nice to have full instructions for the microwave and oven. It was also mentioned in the read up about the property that a shop and farm shop were a few minutes away, this however was not correct, the farm shop had been gone over 2 years and there was no shop. The pub was ok but to get to it if you didn’t want to drive the very narrow lane going uphill from Driftwood was a a bit risky as there were no places to get out of the way in the last bit of the hill.

First of all, may I apologise that we fell short on this occasion. Please let me try to address the problems you encountered. I was shocked to read that there was a leak in the roof during your stay. The weather had been awful that week, with a lot of torrential rain and wind. I would have thought that something so serious as water running down the walls would have warranted a call to myself or Sykes. I am rather surprised that you didn't get in touch, specifically as I said on the phone before your stay that I was local, and therefore could actively respond to problems as and when they arrived. Unfortunately, if I am only made aware 4 days after you have left that there are problems, it does not give me the chance to fix or rectify them. Furthermore, this weeks’ guests I assume will now be affected by your choice to not report the issue, apart from in this review, days after your departure. The dishwasher will be replaced at our next maintenance period in September, where we will be taking 6 months out to completely renovate the property. I am sorry to hear you found the lane narrow. It is a country lane with passing places, and not uncommon in rural areas. We are able to successfully navigate it with our van when we carry out the changeover cleans, but I do accept and apologise if you found it difficult. We will of course be addressing the rectifiable issues you have highlighted, but hopefully our customer feedback in the last few weeks (5 sets of guests have rated us 100%) show that these were one off problems, that when reported, can be sorted in a prompt manner. We stayed with our 3 dogs and two 16 year olds. We didn't feel the need to go far with the beach on our door step and even the teenagers were out side all day. The welcome pack left by the owner was wonderful touch and the amount of little touches from a fire pit starter pack to a small telescope to star gaze at night, made our stay just perfect. Early morning strolls on the beach were perfect for our nervous resuce dogs and the beach only ever had a handful of people on walks, through out the whole day. Perfect. We will be back!

The cottage is perfectly situated on the beach with amazing views that changed every day. We had absolutely everything we needed and loved both the log burner for cosy evenings indoors, to the fire pit on the patio to make the most of the outdoors. Loads of space for 4 adults and 2 dogs, it really felt like a home from home. Fabulous walks, friendly locals, pretty village, we really couldn’t have asked for more. Amy was a pleasure to deal with and we wanted to pass on a huge thank you for everything, it was superb. We are so looking forward to coming back

  • "The location is fabulous so this is the 3rd stay for us."

The cottage is nicely decorated but it needs a bit of attention now. Our first stay was 2018. Now 5 years on nothing has been updated. Each time the facilities standard have declined slightly. It’s a real shame. Eg dishwasher falling to bits, kitchen unit falling to bits, wood burner outside broken, no welcome pack like first time, oven stopped working then restarted, main bedroom smelled musty and mildewey, windows used to work but some wouldn’t open (kitchen and living room) and one wouldn’t close. (Side of living room). Extractor in bathroom no longer working. Electrical socket in living room near wood burner doesn’t work. I think in hot weather it would be unbearable as both of our previous states in summer months needed all windows open for ventilation. Apart from that we enjoyed the stay due to location. We may even return but just hope for a bit of maintenance as it isn’t a cheap stay - quite pricey due to fab location.

Whilst extremely pleased that you have visited us twice previously, I am so sorry that some things were not right this time. Let me try to address these issues. We have never been made aware of any issue with the dishwasher but will gladly replace this if needs be. Likewise we were unaware that the fire pit was broken and we had not been informed - had we known this, it would have been replaced. We always provide a welcome pack. During the time of your stay I was working abroad and cannot understand how our cleaning company missed this as they were provided with supplies for each guest’s stay. We will make sure this does not happen in the future. Regarding the oven and the socket, we recently competed our annual Electrician’s check (March) where no faults were found but we will naturally have this looked at immediately. Obviously any issue with the windows is unacceptable; when I inspected the property recently I found one of the keys was missing. This had not been reported but I have now ordered a replacement. Since we opened our cottage we have replaced and improved various items; flooring TV, coffee table, bedding, microwave, sofa, window and numerous soft furnishings as and when necessary but apologise if anything else was due for replacement. Due to the fact that I work abroad in the Winter I do rely on a cleaning company. It is clear that on more than one occasion recently they have fallen short of the previous high standards we have always tried to maintain. I am now personally overseeing every changeover clean and will do my absolute utmost to provide the best service to my guests. Sincerely, Amy Property Owner

  • "We have already sent this to you and the owner."

We have just returned from our second stay at Driftwood Cottage. I feel I need to bring some issues to your attention. We go away 6 - 7 times per year usually for a long weekend. Whilst there are no expectations we have found when we use AirBNb and other similar companies, the staples and basics are provided, especially when it’s is only a weekend break. Unfortunately on arrival at the cottage the following items were not there: The washing powder container was there but it was empty. Sugar container was there but this was also empty. There were no black bin bags even although it clearly states all rubbish must be in black bags due to the access for the bin men. No dishwasher tablets. No toilet cleaner There wasn’t even any salt and pepper. Surely if you want your property to be kept in a reasonable condition you need to provide basics for this. Also when you provide a log burner basic supplies are expected for the first night then it is up to the guest to purchase additional supplies for the fire. On arrival there was absolutely nothing there for the fire, we went back into Ulverston and purchased kindling, logs and Firelighter. However when we tried to light the fire not only did you not provide anything it wasn’t even cleaned out and can provide photos as this looks as if it had not been cleaned out for weeks as we have a log burner at home. There was nothing provided to light the fire, if it wasn’t for a kind neighbour we would have had to return to Ulverston. If the above wasn’t bad enough, we had major issues with the main bedroom. As soon as we opened the door the smell of damp musty bedding hit you, in fact the bedding was so damp we had to strip the bed and tumble dry it. While it removed the damp it didn’t get rid of the musty smell. If there had been washing powder provide we also have washed it but we were not going back again to Ulverston to purchase washing powder/pods. The keys provided did not open the windows I would have again thought to keep the smell down the kitchen window would have opened. The freezer compartment door was broken meaning it has completely iced up, this really needs attention. You have a wonderful location and charging a premium rate to stay there however you are not providing the means for a pleasant stay. Your seem to be aiming for shabby chic look unfortunately it is just shabby. We do not like and indeed never sent such an email, we feel it is necessary to bring this to your attention and await your response. The Bakers

We were so terribly sorry to read this review. Let me try to address these issues. We have been working abroad for the past few months and employ a cleaning company which was thoroughly briefed on the standard we are trying to maintain with our cottage. As such, I was unaware of the shortcomings and am so sorry we fell short on this occasion. We have always strived to achieve high standards and can only apologise for the disappointment you felt on arrival. We cannot understand why the staples were not provided. Our cleaning company were operating on our behalf this week and are always provided with the basics to replenish stocks for our guests. We have no idea why this wasn’t done on this occasion. I would say that the cleaners live 10 minutes away and had we been notified, would have dispatched any missing items shortly after your arrival. The fire remains a grey area as most cleaning companies will not clean a fire which is why we ask our guests to leave the fire as clean as when they find it. There definitely should have been a starter pack of logs or firewood available for the first night. Regarding the windows, on my return to the UK in April I personally checked the keyring and found that one was missing; this has obviously been lost and not reported by a previous guest for which I apologise. A replacement key is on order. The musty bedding comment was really worrying, It is obvious that the bedding had not dried properly before replacement; this was a failing on behalf of our cleaners for which we apologise. The freezer compartment had been replaced but as is often the case, an exact match was impossible to source. We are now replacing the whole fridge/freezer. Since we opened our cottage to guests we have had a generally high satisfaction rate which you can see from our ratings, even those in the weeks previous to your stay. This does not excuse our poor performance on this occasion for which we are sorry. I am now personally taking control of the cleaning and maintenance and will work tirelessly to resolve all the issues you mention to achieve previous high standards. Amy Property Owner

The photos of the cottage as advertised at the booking stage was not reflective of the standard upon arrival. Some furnishings - chairs, tables etc had been removed. The property was dirty, there were no operating manuals for the oven, microwave or hob and the windows were in a poor state of repair as was the shower which also had minimal pressure. The bathroom was in need of an upgrade. Externally, there was less patio furniture than advertised/shown in the pictures at the booking stage and the patio itself was dirty and full weeds. Parking was tricky and difficult to exit into the lane. Would not book this property again

The cottage is very tranquil and peaceful, set next to a beautiful beach. It was a joy watching the tide come in and go out and we had some beautiful sunsets. The cottage itself is very comfortably furnished. The owner has provided so much including dishwasher and microwave. Laundry facilities are in the washroom if you need to use them. The oven and hob are easy to use but instructions for everything are in a book that the owner has also listed where shops, pubs etc are. The beach is beautiful and you see the local wildlife and also dog walkers now and then. We would definitely come here again if we could get booked in, but it is a very popular cottage.

Only a few locals from the village use the lane, so it is very quiet. I loved sitting looking out across the bay watching the birds, and identifying places on the other side of the bay. Useful for the darker winter evenings for a longer stay would be a slightly larger TV and DVD player as internet connection not always brilliant. Happy to be without for a few days! Fabulous dog friendly pub a short walk away (Farmers) serving great food. Check times though as they don’t serve food in the week between 3-5 and no other facilities in the village. Oven absolutely engrained in grease internally and the dial externally was so old as to be illegible therefore it was impossible to set temperature with any accuracy ( these are important considerations as due to recent covid measures we needed to eat in) The fridge had not been defrosted in a long, long time. The location is everything and the views are amazing across the bay. The cottage is light airy and had everything we needed. The log burner is fantastic for cold nights and the oil fired rads provide ample heat. The duvets were huge and my partner loved them but they were too big for me so I ended up with the blanket which was fine. There were a few minor issues such as the shower tray being blocked on first night which I had to unblock with drain unblocker which was provided under the sink. This could have been checked during the clean. The main bin was full from previous visitors and loose rubbish at the bottom which was not taken by bin men. Luckily we dont produce at lot of rubbish. The lock to the front door kept jamming and we nearly got locked out so I had to lubricate it with oil which sorted the problem. I know the owner would have sorted these issues if we would have asked them as they were just a text away but they were easy sorted. We would definitely return as I bet during the summer it would be even better.

  • "I have booked holiday properties with Sykes before and know that they have some great accommodation on their website and Driftwood cottage was no exception."

The location is stunning and the property itself is cosy and well equipped. When I called to let owner know that we were on our way she was friendly and helpful and on arrival we saw that a bottle of wine had been left for us which was a lovely touch. We had great days out, whether going on excursions or staying close by and strolling along the beach. I loved this property, as did my family and would return again in a heartbeat. Thankyou

  • "The cottage was gorgeous, exactly what we were looking for, our very own peace of paradise, for a week at least!"

Two very happy adults, two happy toddlers and two extremely pleased dogs! They loved their daily beach walks. Sykes themselves were extremely helpful and when I thought I would have to cancel my booking due to my partners work commitments they did everything they could to make sure we went on our family holiday. Couldn't recommend the company or this beach-house more. Thank you!

  • "The cottage setting was perfect for our dogs."

The cottage was very well equipped and very comfortable. The whole Sykes experience was easy from start to finish and I would certainly recommend Sykes to family and friends. Also, the cottage owner was very friendly and helpful. I also loved having the new Sykes app on my phone so that I could get in touch if needed (but I didn't need to as everything was perfect). We had a fabulous holiday with our dogs and have already booked our next Sykes pet friendly cottage break for August this year. Thanks for providing a fantastic service and I'm sure we will be continue to use Sykes for many years to come.

As non dog owners we will not book a cottage again where dogs have been. Although our cleaner worked very hard for 5 hours prior to us going in there was still evidence of dog occupation ! Mike

  • "We had the most relaxing time at this cottage, it is very comfortable and well equipped."

We particularly love the location as we have dogs and it is straight out of the door onto the beach for some great walks. There are also plenty of places to drive to and then go walking. Nearby Ulveston has good shopping for all your provisions and plenty of places to eat. This the fifth time we have been to this cottage and we will definitely book again. Highly recommended for a quiet break away.

The bathroom was like ice with no heating. The note book said not to use the washing machine but the information stated washing facilities. Found it not as good as other places I rented. Only 1toilet roll so bought more spent a fortune on logs to keep warm. I loved the setting of it ,but wouldn’t go back again.

  • "My husband and myself shared the double room."

Small double and very tight space. The bed abutted two walls on the side and base. If the one on the inside needed to get up in the night they had to climb over the other person so my husband moved into the single room. The bathroom needs a power shower/ wet room and/ or a bath with overhead shower. The present one is dated and weak. Beautiful view but pebble beach. Tricky reversing out of the property down a very narrow lane. We have always been delighted with Sykes properties but this was disappointing as it’s really more suited for two adults and a small family as a base with the current sleeping and bathroom arrangements. The owner very kindly left us welcom gifts. Thank you

  • "What a splendid cottage!"

The location is truly spectacular. If you're looking for tranquility, then look no further-this ticks all the boxes. The constantly changing light and mood of the landscape was just breathtaking. My husband and I had only one regret- that we were unable to stay longer. On arrival, the cottage was warm, fresh and spotlessly clean . The decor compliments the surroundings perfectly with lovely attention to detail. The bedrooms and soft furnishings were super- comfortable and welcoming. Nokosi, our Alaskan Malamute was in his element. Having the beach literally on the doorstep was absolutely perfect and we spent several hours each day walking and exploring the many miles of sand. This was our first UK break- it definitely won't be our last! We can't wait to return to Driftwood Cottage!

  • "Beautiful views and sunrises."

Moon and stars at night spectacular. Look closely and you will see shooting stars. Take the walk from the cottage (to the left) along the beach (takes under an hour) to the layby and find Roys Ice cream van. I have heard you can bump into deer on the path. 20 flavours of delicious ice cream. Across the road is Chill and Grill who also has a good selection of ice cream, slightly dearer than Roys, however the flavours are stronger. If you decide to go to the stone circle walk to the end of the field in the direction of Bardsea, turn left at the wall and walk 1/4 mile up the hill for some fantastic views of Ulverston and the Southern Lake District mountains. Some lovely quaint shops in Ulverston and a delicious pie shop half way up the main street a few shops away from the Co-op. Take a trip to the North end of Walney Island and you will be impressed by the Sunset and the patterns it makes on the water. With the windills in the background it makes a lovely shot for those interested in photography. All in all it is a lovely cottage offering many interesting locations within a short drive or walk away.

About the location

BARDSEA

Ulverston 2 miles.

Set on a hill looking across to Morecambe Bay is the small village of Bardsea. This remote area grew from a small fishing village and farming area into a major transportation link for coal, iron ore and corn. No longer a vital port, Bardsea still retains its fishing heritage, and features a pub serving fine ales and good food. The village is close to spectacular Furness Abbey, while the ancient market town of Ulverston is just 2 miles away, and still has a street market every Thursday and Saturday, plus many festivals throughout the year, including an amazing lantern procession in September and a superb Dickensian weekend in early December. With all the attractions of the Lake District National Park, beaches and good birdwatching of the Furness coast close by, this peaceful and quiet area has plenty to offer.
