Pro’s Location & parking permit Con’s Cottage damp & dirty, needs a good deep clean & painting Would we stay here again, it’s a definite NO

  • "The property was deal for our stay."

However, it is in need of some tlc. The paint is flaking off the walls in parts, causing my husband to constantly be getting it on his clothes, due to him being registered blind and unable to see it. The heating was on all the time and I was unable to alter it. The bedding was cosy, apart from the bottom sheet which needs throwing away due to wear. I think it needs a proper deep clean to get rid of cobwebs and mould around the windows. The kitchen and lounge area are perfect.

  • "There was substantial mold on the window frames and down the walls, in particular where the bedding was stored."

This had been highlighted in a previous review (after I had made my booking) and I am disappointed there had been no attempt to rectify this. The bedding had seen better days, but changing it for the bedding in the moldy corner was not appealing. The were light fittings broken and dusty, broken bedside cabinet. Photos can be provided. The check in time of 5pm is quite late and check out of 9am is unacceptable. I didn't see this on the listing when booking. It also stated that earlier check ins or late check outs would not be considered

  • "The bathrooms and kitchen were very nice."

1 single bed was held together with Duct tape and collapsed when my 7 year old sat on it. Bedroom on first floor had a very old mattress which belongs in the bin, the bed sank into the middle, we had to sleep on the sofa bed. The beds had fluff and dirt underneath it-Dog hair everywhere even though it’s listed as no dogs. Kitchen roll stuffed in letterbox. 20 inch tv very inadequate for that size of a room, plus tv stand broken and remote batteries didn’t work. The arms of the sofa were damp and sticky. The shelves in the kitchen had spoons wedged underneath to keep them up. The last property we rented through you was absolutely spot on but this 1 was not great, thank goodness the weather was good as I would not have like to have been stuck indoors with 3 kids. The internet was brilliant in the village so it wouldn’t hurt to have a decent tv with access to internet when needed.

  • "Kippers Corner is a good sized house for 6+ guests."

Overall the house is in a good state of repair but could do with some cosmetic upgrades to make it a bit smarter. TV was not working on arrival but caretaker Keith fixed it when reported. Bedrooms and bathrooms are all good but again possibly a bed/mattress upgrade won’t go amiss. Towels were a bit hit and miss also - not quite adult sized for the bath/shower. Kitchen provision was good and everything we needed was provided but lacked real storage space to put our groceries away. Sofas were comfy and bucket seats add 2 more comfortable options in the living room. WiFi was strong and very welcome. A good property and we would visit again. Thank you.

Great location (Staithes is wonderful) and was just what we were looking for, for a short break. Seagulls a bit noisy in the night but that's nature for you. Thanks.

As we were staying with young children, baby gates on the bottom of the stairs and rooms would have been hugely beneficial. More kitchen storage for food would have also been helpful for shopping for the week. We really enjoyed our stay though. Thank you.

  • "The property had an overwhelming smell of damp, the windows were filthy and many of them wouldn't open meaning the ventilation was poor."

We love Staithes and go every year for a week. We have booked a different cottage for next year - whilst looking we noticed the price for the same week in Kippers Corner next year had gone up by several hundred pounds - almost to the same price we are paying next year for a larger and much more well maintained holiday cottage just across the road! The windows need sorting, the damp needs sorting, the beds need sorting (slats were missing and some of the sheets need replacing as the double on the top floor was thin, old and bobbly ) The good things were the location, the decor, the kitchen equipment was fine, the shower was good (altho the door kept coming off)

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Kippers Corner."

The cottage is beautifully presented and each room has been thoughtfully put together. Great facilities, we were very comfortable in general. The bed in the master suite was a bit rickety and we’d have appreciated thicker curtains as the sun was bright from about 5am - minor issues though.

  • "What an excellent cottage in a prime location!"

Layout is very suited to either a big family or even a couple of smaller groups. No cottage could be better suited in location - opposite all the conveniences of shops, pubs, as well as the beach!

  • "Kippers Corner is in a fantastic location in the delightful village of Staithes."

A handy loading bay opposite the cottage makes it easy for unpacking the car. The village has good local amenities, 2 eating in pubs, coffee shops, ice cream and butchers with a some vegetables. The cottage was well equipped for 6 and the log burning store made all the difference.

  • "The cottage is not as the pictures and it isn't suitable for 6 adults."

The twin bedroom is very very small and there is no storage space whatsoever. Storage in the other 2 bedrooms is also limited and there is no dressing table in the main bedroom. The cottage is very tired and definitely needs a lot of TLC. The outside space is a hazard with very steep uneven steps and also needs a lot of updating. The bathroom although spacious would benefit from a second shower cubicle being installed. The pictures show chairs around the dining table, these have been replaced by stools! The downstairs living/dining/kitchen area is small and cramped. Parking is at the top of a very steep hill so if you are not fit or have mobility issues this could be a problem, although you are permitted to drop off outside the cottage but then have to park your vehicle in the top car park. Staithes itself is a beautiful area and could not be faulted.

  • "We stayed in Kippers Corner last year with our young grandsons so knew what to expect."

The cottage was clean & well provided with sanitisers of every type.We had a lovely holiday. Given that the cottage will have been empty for many weeks, it was disappointing to find the fridge & small freezer just as heavily iced up as last year. While we realise there are difficulties because of Covid19 ( & we have a daughter who keeps a B & B in Whitby) it was daunting to hear from Sykes only 8 days before arrival that we could not enter until 5.00pm (after I had booked a supermarket delivery at the same time so had to cancel it) & that we had to vacate at 9.00am having bagged up all the linen.I found this a worry the whole week. We did manage it--we are 70 years old & our grandchildren just 7 & 5 & though very willing not really so much help.It made the last evening & final morning really stressful.

A real gem. Parking is an issue but well worth the effort. Dotties tea room is a perfect place to have a cuppa and a legendary scone. The cod and lobsters food and welcome is second to none. Sitting outside the pub with the most impressive sea view. The people welcome you. A creative vibe. The cottage was beautiful. Woodburner Huge bath. Comfy beds and very spacious. The owners have improved the cottage greatly. I went in January and it snowed.... the cottage was toasty warm with masses of hot water. A real treasure. Loved every minute of my break. • "This cottage is marketed for 7 to 8 people."

Do you think a 2ft 6inch Fridge is adequate? Also within this fridge is a freezer compartment that was ( and I am not exaggerating ) completely full of ice, a solid block). Reported on arrival but told they had not had time to defrost. It had not been done for months/years. Main bedroom mattress well past its date, as others have mentioned, and most uncomfortable. Paint peeling off walls in most rooms and the exterior was probably the most unattractive in the location due to a need to be decorated. The rear communal yard was overgrown with weeds and not something anyone would use. Again for 7/8 people the small tv (18 inch?) made viewing somewhat limiting and the kitchen facilities were not up the usual standard you would expect. Catering for 7/8 people needed creativity with the pans and utensils provided . If you lose anything do not look behind the sofa cushions unless you want to gather enough for another meal. Managed, however, to have a good holiday.

  • "A lovely cottage with everything that you could possibly need to stay for a week."

Situated in an excellent position in the centre of Staithes. In our group of 8 we had a toddler and a 4 year old and there was plenty of room for them to move about, a high chair and travel cot were provided. It was easy to get a supermarket delivery. The only downside was the outside space that had been in the description, we were unable to access it from the rear door because it didn’t open fully (the new owners are going to rectify this) and access from the side of the cottage was difficult because the entrance was overgrown. It wasn’t an inspiring place to sit. For everything else, I would really recommend this cottage, we had a glorious holiday

The bed in the ensuite bedroom has a ridiculously soft mattress - this was so soft it was very uncomfortable, again I would suggest a medium one . I didn't get a decent nights sleep all week. Other than that the cottage was lovely & so was Staithes, would definately visit again .

Hot water was as described, there was an override button in the tank cupboard that gave you plenty of hot water. This button was on a timer for 40 mins. Had everything in it for cooking, Beds were made with clean linen. Ideal for a stay in Staithes. The fire was out of action due to an issue with the chimney that was booked to be fixed, the owner has left plenty of oil filled radiators for use to compensate. Was lucky with the weather on BH weekend, did not need any heating.

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
