  • "A lovely quirky cottage that is wonderfully placed to see such beautiful parts of Devon."

It was exceptionally clean with comfy beds and crisp white bedding. The bathrooms were amazing. The only thing I would mention is that the cottage is heated by electric radiators which, to conserve energy costs, need to be switched off at night and when you leave the property. We understand that, but the kitchen and dining area were very cold ( it was December!). We got the wood burner going in the sitting room each night and cosied up in there rather than try to get the stove going in the kitchen area too. We never really used the downstairs bathroom as we didn’t want to waste electricity to heat it just to use the loo! So only used the upstairs bathroom for bathing and showers. By the way, tons of very hot water which was great! We had a lovely meal at the community pub across the road. All in all, it was a lovely few days away but a bit cold in parts of the cottage.

  • "The cottage was clean and comfortable."

We found the road at the front of the cottage very dangerous having 2 dogs the traffic was busy and driving fast through the village and no pavements. Was disappointed not to have a welcome pack as every other holiday cottage we have stayed in provided one. The beds were very comfortable lovely soft pillows and duvets and very clean .beautiful views of the sea stunning scenery.

  • "We had a great stay at Glen Cottage."

With sea view in all the bedrooms, upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, a large entrance (with white sofa in pictures) allowing us to store our coats and shoes while keeping the rest de-cluttered, very comfortable and cosy bedrooms, it was close to perfect. We didn’t use the leaving room, preferring to gather in the large and well equipped kitchen with the garden door and plenty of light.

The cottage is fantastic, comfortable, clean, with beautiful garden that allows access to the public dog walk area. The Kings Arms pub is just across the street offering wonderful meals and drinks. We’d love to come back again.

  • "Perfect location with beautiful views."

Agree with previous reviews that the cottage needs a little tlc in regards to decorating and the cooker certainly needs a clean. Lovely that the cottage has two log burners with instructions for those unsure but not left with any kindling or fire lighters for either as stated, after a thorough search we ended up having to go and buy both since reading back over these reviews I see this has been mentioned previously. We had a lovely break but a bit of attention to detail could have made it perfect.

Thank you for your feedback and we are glad you enjoyed the views and the location - they are very special. Kindling and firelighters are always available but cannot be kept in the cottage itself as it is a fire hazard in thatched properties. This is kept in the shed but this should have been made available to you and we have advised the changeover company accordingly. Redecoration of the cottage will take place in January 2023 as well as installing a new downstairs bathroom. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful views from Glen cottage which is set in a pretty village, close to Dartmouth."

The cottage is quite large and has a garden at the rear of the property. Although the garden is set on a steep slope the view from the top is worth climbing up to. All the above comments are spoilt by the general poor upkeep of this property. The kitchen equipment ( including the stove) was greasy and dirty. We didn’t feel comfortable with this and it stopped us from wanting to prepare even a snack, let alone prepare a meal. It’s only saving grace was a very comfortable and clean, bed in the main bedroom. This cottage in its present condition, is certainly not a 5 Star property. We didn’t stay for the 7 days we booked because of its poor condition. We accept it’s a very old picturesque cottage but that’s no excuse from its very poor maintenance.

We are so pleased you enjoyed the location of the cottage but are sorry that the cleanliness was not good. This is not acceptable and has been addressed. Maintenance and redecoration will take place in January 2023 when we hope these points will be rectified. Property Owner

The beds were very comfortable, plenty of hot water and all mod cons provided in a manner that did not intrude on the old world charm of the property. The upper terrace with a sea view was a major highlight.

  • "I was pleasantly surprised after reading previous reviews."

I can see why this should be a 5 star property, and I appreciated the styling and quality of fixtures and fittings. The house has a lovely, comfortable charm about it but can feel a little lived in which may not be to everyone's taste. Main issue was the cobwebs and dust - please ask the property management team to clean under and behind furniture as well as beyond head height. Also paint needs a touch up in some of the more well used areas as it has got scuffed and stained - I realise this is a hazard of having white paint in holiday properties! The view was superb and enclosed village field behind the property was perfect for our dog. Overall a very pleasant stay and I would recommend

Lovely cosy cottage, with all the necessary amenities Cleanliness okay, but lots of cobwebs Main bed's a little soft for our liking and slightly uphill Would we come again, yes

Thank you for your comments regarding Glen Cottage and we are glad you enjoyed your stay in the main. With regards to the cleanliness, we are very pleased to say that the cottage is now under new management which we are sure will address the cleanliness issues and all the other important elements which go in to ensuring a wonderful stay when on holiday. With regards to the bed, due to the age of the cottage the floor is slightly uneven in places, however the bed is on self-levelling feet which we have set to be level. It may have been that before your stay someone had re-adjusted them but this is something we have checked regularly. Property Owner

  • "It is OK, but unloved."

The little things that make a holiday cottage really good are missing. No little welcome gift/pint of milk in the fridge etc. Half used toilet rolls left and no spares. It’s a cold house and hadn’t been adequately heated before we arrived. The only way to properly heat the kitchen-diner is a wood burner (the radiator in that space is far too small to be effective) but no kindling or firefighters had been left. The wood burner itself isn’t really big enough to heat the space easily. The electric radiators aren’t on timers so you either have to leave them on overnight and feel too hot, or turn them off and wake up in the morning to a freezing house. The main bed is really uncomfortable and needs a new mattress. The main oven wasn’t working. There’s a poor selection of kitchen utensils. It is not a home from home. In then end we left a day early because we didn’t fancy another night of discomfort.

Thank you for your feedback and we must apologise for the absence of such items as kindling, firelighters, additional toilet roll etc, this should have absolutely all been put out for your use as they are all kept onsite. This has been addressed and will not happen again. The radiators should have been left on low before your arrival to ensure the cottage was warm and cosy; we find that if you keep them on low, it warms the cottage perfectly and is not too hot at night. The kitchen is fully equipped but we apologise if you could not find something you were looking for. We are saddened that you found your stay at Glen Cottage below standard but we are looking at making some significant changes. We are always on hand to help / advise our guests when needed. • "We very much enjoyed our stay at Glen Cottage."

We read the feed back from other renters and although we understand some of their criticisms our stay was very satisfactory . We thought the location and the property were above our expectations. In general, it would be easy to pick holes in aspects of even the very best rental properties - we got what we expected and came away thinking we would re-book next year. On another matter, even though the property allowed dogs to stay there was no evident smell of this. This will be good news for anyone considering renting the cottage who was concerned about any lingering odours. The property had a real 'homely' feel to it and we were soon feeling were were at home. We especially enjoyed the open fires. Overall we rated it excellent..

It is a lovely quirky cottage just a couple of minor things cleanliness was good but not great and the locks very very fiddley but I don't know if that's because I'm 5ft 10 and everything seems built for smaller people the bath did leak a little but other than that it was great lovely views the village is very quiet and the restraunt the laughing monk is closed but the kings arms pub sells lovely food and the staff are great back to the cottage it is warm and cosy the 2 fires are wonderful I would deffo stop again as I said just a little touch up here and there but highly recommended

Thank you for posting your review on Glen Cottage and we are so pleased you were able to enjoy the cottage and the log burners, we do love it there! The cleaning has been addressed and we can only apologise if this was not up to standard. We have had problems with cleaners leaving during lock-down so it has been a tricky time, but that is no excuse and the cottage should have been left clean for your stay. Thank for your comments on the leaking bath we have now fully refurbished the bathroom and I am pleased to say the bath still allows the same lovely views of the garden. We would love to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

  • "Lovely period cottage in a great location but we were very disappointed on arrival."

Surprised cottage has 5 tick rating needs reassessing. Cottage needs a refurb and a total clean. Dust and cobwebs everywhere. Shower tray drain partially blocked thus water leaked under the door. Unable to use downstairs toilet and utility room due to awful smell. Wooden floors in both bedrooms and landing very slippery underfoot whatever wearing felt like walking on ice. Came for a relaxing holiday which we had whilst out or sat in the great garden but could not relax inside the cottage. Most of our complaints had been previously reported on cottage comments book and accident book but nothing done. Sorry to be so negative but we felt very let down.

Thank you for your feedback. We have addressed the cleanliness with our cleaner - we can assure you we do read the feedback, but as you have experienced, this still appears not to be up to scratch. Sadly we have had cleaners leave over lock-down and it has been hard to find replacements. In regards to the wooden floors, it is a period listed building with timber floors which we find part of the charm of the cottage but we understand it is not nice to feel cold under-foot. The radiators do take the chill off and can be adjusted to your requirements. We are sorry you had a disappointing stay and do apologise. Property Owner

  • "In terms of accuracy of listing; we have used Sykes for years and the service is always very good."

The property description was accurate but the star rating may be a little generous. This was our first stay in Glen Cottage which is a dog friendly property. The property itself is picture perfect, C17 chocolate box thatch and well furnished inside. It is in a great location and with its own parking space. With regards to cleanliness; the property needs a really good clean, given that we stayed during the COVID restrictions the cleaning was unsatisfactory with a lot of dust, oil drips down the oven splashback, dirty floors etc. With regards to facilities the cottage also needs some maintenance; the shower leaks quite badly, because the gap at the bottom of the door is too big allowing water to come through the ceiling into the living room. And in terms of comfort; depending upon your taste the double bed is very soft, it is also very squeaky (so you hear every turn in the night) and slopes downhill (because of the old floorboards) so that your head is below the height of your feet.

Thank you for your feedback and your comments, which are appreciated. Glen Cottage had a change of cleaner at the start of the second lockdown and all issues have been raised directly with the cleaning team. As a heritage property we are aware the cottage needs some attention from time to time in certain areas and, as every year, we have works planned during the winter months when we are able to access the cottage for a longer period of time. We hope this helps to address the queries raised and we look forward to being able to use the cottage ourselves and to carry out any maintenance as soon as possible. Property Owner

  • "Glen Cottage is gorgeous."

We loved it. Lovely sea views and very tastefully decorated. Well equipped kitchen - everything you could possibly need. The beds were comfortable and the bedrooms were cosy. Everything was spotless. Parking is convenient and easy. The location was perfect - so near the beaches. Our only slight issue was that when we arrived there was only a small amount of wood in the log basket and no kindling and with 2 wood burners to light downstairs with no other major source of heating downstairs, we had to drive around to find a garage that sold wood. We arrived in darkness, so didn't see the huge pile of logs outside in the garden until the next day! This was minor and maybe there was a note saying there were logs outside that we missed! It would be great to have a house book with local attractions, local doctor's information for emergencies, the nearest supermarket, etc - although maybe this was removed due to Covid? Overall it was fabulous! Highly recommend, we hope to return.

We stayed for 10 days over Xmas and new year and were welcomed by lots of arrival gifts to start us of, a bottle of Prosecco, fruit, biscuits and much more. There are 2 log burning stoves and many plug in electric heaters, we only lit the stove in the kitchen as this was plenty to heat the cottage. Great established garden with access to the village green ( for the dogs ) . There is a local shop and pub within 100 yds, went to the local on New Year’s Eve and had the best night. Every day was spent discovering long costal walks to tire the dogs out, the area is stunning aswell as the cottage. Many thanks

The amazing 'secret' garden (that's what it reminded me of with all his nooks and crannys!) was stunning with beautiful views from the top over the coast. I can't wait to go back in the summer and sit at the top of the garden all day and into the night! The cottage although old and historic is equally modern, light and airy. Perfectly suited for couples or friends, Glen Cottage is a wonderful retreat to visit, with stunning sea views reaching across to the delightful Dartmouth.

A wooden porch leads through to a large, beautifully finished day room with a stone wall to the left and a flagstone floor.

This room extends to the living room which features a large woodburner, with a window seat to the front, bringing you closer to the clear waters which become more noticeable as the clouds pass by.

You will also discover a newly fitted bathroom with built-in-bath, basin and WC with a small utility area located on the ground floor.

The kitchen is beautifully presented with traditional features, a lovely light and airy room with parquet flooring, a small woodburner sits in the corner.

There are patio doors to the rear so you can take in the pleasant outlook from the comfort of the accommodation, or open up the glass doors to experience the tiered garden first hand.

Upstairs, two double bedrooms are soothingly finished, tied together with storage space and natural sea views.

The luxury bathroom, an all-white suite, designed to a high standard, looking out over the lovely garden.

The terraced garden is the perfect place to absorb the glorious sea and countryside, with its dog walking field beyond.

In the village, take some time to appreciate the beautiful church plus the well-renowned Laughing Monk restaurant and it’s newly refurbished pub, The Kings Arms.

There is a small village green immediately accessed from the rear garden where you can picnic, with its wildlife section and backdrop of Start Bay.

The magical crescent-shaped family beach at Blackpool Sands is only a mile away and the South West Coast path on the doorstep.
