  • "Absolutely fantastic views over the sea from just about every cottage window at the back including the sitting room and all the bedrooms."

The very large rear garden which is grassed is easily made secure. We have a Welsh Terrier and could let him out to run around without any concerns. There is a lovely clifftop walk to the west and 100 yards along the road to the east there is a path leading down to the beach and rock pools. The sunsets are really lovely too.

  • "A beautiful and comfortable holiday home."

It had everything you would need for self catering, it was like an Aladdin’s cave finding supplies in drawers, cling film etc, games, books, spices. The home is lovely and spacious, beautiful sea views from all the rooms, able to prepare meal in kitchen and look out at the changing sea view. There is also a very large back grassed garden, and a lovely sheltered seated patio area. Our host was tending the lovely front garden when we arrived, and was full of info for us, to help with our stay. Added bonus is off street parking, car can sit right in front of the house, which is situated back from the road. I was aware that the garden was not fully enclosed from other reviews, which wasn’t a problem for us, as our dog does not wander off, but as others have suggested, a small gate at the side of the house would be the icing on the cake for this property. Mr and Mrs Smith, we had a relaxing time staying at your house, and would 100% recommend

One of the best places we have ever stayed, as you can tell. There was a new suite in the living room, and everything was perfect. The weather was also very kind to us...but only saw the resident dolphins once. We have travelled large proportions of Scotland but will always enjoy returning to Portessie and this fabulous cottage with its wonderful views of the Moray Firth. Mr Smith looks after the garden and is always busy improving the cottage and the surrounding area.

  • "We found this property exactly as advertised."

Well furnished, comfortable and cleanliness excellent. The location is stunning with un-interupted views out to the North Sea. A fully enclosed garden for our small dog would have been the icing on the cake. My two friends from Norfolk and I agree that this is the best holiday accommodation that we have stayed in over the number of years that we have been meeting up. Thank you to Mr & Mrs Smith for providing us with an excellent base for our holiday.

Everything we needed was provided and we were very comfortable. I have a disability, use a crutch and had no issues getting around the property or using the facilities there. The owners should mention having an electric reclining chair and plugs with USB ports as these were definitely unexpected bonuses and made our stay so much more pleasant. Thank you. Would I love to come back again soon.

Mr Smith was there to greet us, and as usual was busy planting summer bedding plants, and maintaining the garden. It is clear he really takes pride in everything. We couldn't fault the accommodation, even though the weather did let us down, it won't put us off and can't wait to return again in the future. The Moray Firth dolphins gave us a nice display and all in all its always sad to leave, Portessie and the fabulous views. It was week 15 & 16 of our visits to this accommodation since 2012 (An additional 2 weeks were cancelled due to lockdowns) so you can tell we like staying here. The views are always fantastic and ever changing. December was a great time to visit. (After our July week was spoilt by all the 'staycationers'! - We go to Scotland to escape but people were everywhere!) Weather was unfashionably mild and dry for the most part, and any rain mainly fell overnight! We loved it, especially our Border Collie, Molly. She gets so excited when she sees that big garden to run up and down in. The beaches only had a few dog walkers so it was paradise.

The cottage is really clean, well equipped and well looked after. The views are fantastic. Even in the rain. We saw a pod of at least 20 dolphins on Friday evening, just as the sun was setting. It's like a home from home for us. The view of the Moray Firth from the windows is awe inspiring, whatever the weather. They had unfortunately had lots of rain prior to our visit and the grass hadn't been cut for a few weeks - it appeared. This made it awkward having dogs, clearing up and we kept losing the dogs ball even though it was red! This didn't spoil anything, the weather was quite kind in that we only had light rain and for the most part it was a dry and mainly cloudy week. We didn't get many beach walks in due to the tide times. However our border collie had plenty of exercise running around the garden. We didn't see any dolphins but there were seals a plenty in the bay near the former Portessie swimming pool. Also, we were lucky enough to see the new aircraft carrier Prince Charles as we left Edinburgh a week earlier and there it was out in the Moray Firth. Another piece of British history to be proud of. You can never fail to leave here feeling relaxed. The sun even shone as we left, beckoning us to return again soon. We are back in June 20.

About the location

PORTESSIE

Buckie 1 mile; Cullen 5 miles; Elgin 18 miles.

Situated on the Moray Firth coast, Portessie is one of a number of old fishing villages that lie on a three-mile stretch of shoreline to the east of Buckie on Scotland's 'sunniest north east coast'. It's an unspoiled coastline, with dramatic cliff scenery, beautiful beaches and picturesque villages such as Gardenstown and Pennan. Families will love the extensive beach at Cullen and enjoy local opportunities to ride, golf and watch rare birdlife - the RSPB Reserve at Spey Bay is a must for keen birdwatchers. The Moray Firth has one of only two resident populations of Bottle-nosed dolphins in Britain and regular boat trips leave from Buckie and Macduff harbours on dolphin-watching expeditions. A wonderful base for a magical holiday experience.
