  • "The property was comfortable and clean and security was good."

My only complaint would be that it was missing basics like hand wash, bin bags and washing up liquid and kitchen roll. The shower was not very good and the water wasn't hot enough, the bathrooms were very cold too. There was also dog mess in the garden which definitely wasn't from my dog. The single room was missing a bedside lamp as well.

  • "Let's start by saying the location is fantastic, beautiful beach at the end of the road."

The property is just a bit tired, lots of spiders and cob webs, mould in the ensuite and mildewy window frames in downstairs bathrooms. Lots of light bulbs were missing, beading missing, just bits of snagging really. Make sure to take your own soap, washing up liquid and cleaning stuff as nothing on site. The back garden is a great size but not secure, it is also full of weeds and brambles and the collapsing sheds are a real feature. I would also suggest some pest control as there is extra wildlife living under the "Veranda", you wouldn't want to eat Alfresco. This could be due to the building renovation next door? All being said I would certainly return to the area, maybe not this property unless these issues are addressed. Monarfon really could be the best dog friendly accommodation, with a bit of TLC.

I had my dogs on long training leads as I didnt think it was secure enough for them, as one will try & escape, but that is more for my peace of mind than anything else. However, the garden is lovely. A hairdryer could be provided & also some more hanging space especially in the 2nd bedroom. The house was ideal for my 85 yr old mum as she could use her walking frame all downstairs as the doorways are big enough for it. Ideal location for beach & great pub at top of road, food is lovely. Also local bus runs aloing top of road if you dont want to use your car. House is very comfortable and quiet.

Just one thing, I would have liked a light shining on the back garden as it was very dark and scary when letting the dogs out at night. • "I expected to stay in a clean house when I booked this property."

I was bitterly disappointed when I entered the house. The skirting boards were dirty. The majority of the wall-to-ceiling corners had cobwebs and spiders in them. Most of the windows had black mould in the recess. The sinks had spiders in them. The dining room double glazed unit had failed so needs replacing. Dirty marks on the cups and glasses in the kitchen cupboards. Dirty fingerprint on the cleaning cloth in the welcome pack. Plastic bottle top on the lounge floor suggest that the cleaning needs to be addressed. Broken lock on patio door so the house was not secure. A broom handle has been provided to jam the patio door shut but I do not feel that this is adequate security for a holiday home. Previous occupants rubbish was still present in the bottom of the upstairs bin. Dead flies and dirt on the window sill of the single bedroom. Black mould/ damp on the bedroom walls in each bedroom. The en-suite was the only room that was clean and habitable. My wife and daughter were physically upset at the prospect of spending time in the house. I called Sykes to explain that the house was dirty, in a poor state of repair and staying in it would be a health risk. They were unable to provide alternative accommodation nearby so we cancelled our family holiday, locked up the property and left. The photographs do not appear to have been updated for over six years and are not a true representation of the current state of the house. I am currently seeking a full refund and I urge anybody booking with Sykes to check the terms and conditions.

  • "When we arrived the key box would not open and I tried to call the contact numbers, after 20 minutes I received a call to say it was not the key box (as previously instructed) but the key pad on the door itself; we had tried both, it was not easy."

In the meantime my son and daughter in law had gone around the side of the cottage and discovered that the patio door was unlocked so they let us in from the inside! The patio door could not be locked from the inside so each day when we went out and each night we barricaded ourselves in. Luckily we had our dog with us who would have alerted us to intruders during the night, however my 78 year old Mum was really disconcerted. The best part about the property is the large garden, our dog enjoyed charging around it whenever we were home. Unfortunately this property is tired, in need of renovation and someone to give it a thorough deep clean. It is okay, we had a nice week; the master and en-suite (very dark, and we did turn the lights on!) were nice, but the rest not so. We had to clean pots, pans and cutlery before they could be used; the kitchen utensils were tired and the knives blunt, we bought our own. There were dead bugs and spiders everywhere including window sills, corners etc. the patio area outside the living room was filthy and looked like it had not been swept this year as it was full of active spider webs and detritus. In all we had a 'nice' time as it was lovely to be so close such a wonderful beach and the beauty of Anglesey; a break from the 'norm' of work etc. Would I return to this property? Absolutely not. It was not the worst, however it was significantly over priced for the (poor quality) facilities; as previously stated it requires modernisation, cleaning and decorating throughout. Oh, and the Patio doors need securing!!!

Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry we fell short of your expectations. We have spoken to the cleaning contractor and had the property deep cleaned. A locksmith has attended and advised that the lock was stiff but useable. He has lubricated the locking mechanism and advised it is fully functional again. Finally with regard the access code for the front door. I have updated the access information to clarify that the Key Code is for entering into the front door keypad (not the key safe to the side). The bungalow itself is well presented, not luxurious but adequate. The beds were clean and comfortable. Everything worked and was well maintained. The 'escape route' from the garden needed a little work to seal it to make it dog proof.

We had a lovely holiday despite the disappointment we felt when we arrived at the property. Negatives are the general neglect of the garden and property, cobwebs and spiders everywhere, rotten windows, the patio door has to be locked with a piece of wood! Generally the kitchen needs a good clean, there was disgusting ' gunk' around the kitchen sink. We gave the kitchen surfaces, plates, cups etc a good clean before we felt comfortable to cook anything. There is no kerbside appeal, whoever took the photos for the website did an amazing job!!!

  • "An email was sent to you regarding this property before I saw form to complete, on the 6th June."

To which I have had no acknowledgement. When we arrived there was white dog hairs ingrained in the carpet in the hallway and throughout the house. My daughter tried to use the Henry vacuum cleaner which would not work because it was so clogged up with long hair. If the cleaner had used this to clean the house , it is no wonder that there was so much dog hair everywhere. My daughter cut all the long hair off the head of the vacuum cleaner then vacuumed all the carpets. Not what you want to do before you bring your bags in to the house. There were not enough bath towels provided for 5 people, luckily we had brought some of our own. The sink in the family bathroom upstairs did not appear to have been cleaned, there was still toothpaste in the sink, plus there was black dirt around the drainage hole and plug hole, the shower rose was dirty and black build up around each of the holes. My daughter had to clean all of these. The toilet downstairs was dirty with faecal matter splattered on the outside of the bowl. All of the cushions in the living room were filthy with stains on all of them. My grandchildren had to wash their feet before getting into bed because they had run around the house barefoot after their shower as their feet were black. We don't think the floors had been mopped before we arrived. The mats at the front and back doors were full of dog hair, mud and sand. My daughter emptied them out and brushed the front step and back door area. I see in previous reviews that previous guests had made similar comments a number of times. Perhaps it might be time for a change of cleaning company. The bottom 4 stairs in the house do not have a handrail. If this had been shown in the photos we would not have rented this property as I have limited mobility and struggled to navigate the stairs. The backrest of one of the chairs in the dining room is very wobbly and needs attention. Some new frying pans and plastic jug would be a wise investment , they are very worn. The shower in the en-suite bathroom needs a handrail fitting for safety, the shower base was extremely slippy. My husband and and I felt very unsafe using the shower. The bathmat provided is very mouldy and needs replacing. It was great to have a washing machine provided, however there is nowhere to hang the washing indoors if the weather is not nice enough to dry outside. It would be much appreciated by all guests if a clothes airer were provided. The garden. The garden is lovely but needs attention, lots of overgrown plants and weeds, The overgrown hedge next to the side gate makes access awkward. One of the upright poles of the hand rail at the back of the garden has completed rotted though close to the base is an accident waiting to happen, This needs addressing as a matter of urgency. This has not occurred overnight , it has been rotten for quite sometime. There is lovely garden furniture in the covered area in the garden pictured in the advert for Monarfon, on your website, which we were looking forward to relaxing on, you can imagine our disappointment when we discovered a wooden picnic bench had replaced the relaxing garden furniture. There was a great lack of drawer space in the bedrooms and one wardrobe in the main bedroom with a hanging rail under the eaves in the single room, not particularly easy to use if elderly. Many of the issues we have raised could not have been sorted during our stay and our daughter had already spent a portion of her time cleaning the house when we should have been able to be relaxing and enjoying the house. Not being able to enter the house till 5 pm and leave by 9 am the following Saturday means you loose nearly half a days holiday. We did not have time to strip the beds as we always have done in the past when hiring holiday homes. My daughter vacuumed all the ground floor before we left as coming in and out of the house packing the cars brought in lots of debris from the overhanging trees. We are very disappointed with our stay

Of the nine lights on the hallway chandelier only 4 had bulbs in - this is the first thing you see!! No guest book - this can be a really valuable resource about the local area. No cafetiere / coffee pot. No tea strainer. No butter dish. No tea/coffee/sugar caddy. No extractor fan One of the three hanging lightbulbs in the dining area one not working. No spare bin liners, towels, bedlinen or batteries - accidents happen and smoke alarm batteries fail! And I know its owners choice re condiments, tea, coffee, sugar, flowers etc but the lack of anything is certainly less than welcoming. Cushions in the living all grubby and very marked. Windowsill in the living room badly needs repairing, flaking and cracked/broken wood. The patio door was closed on arrival but not locked and was extremely difficult to lock - had to ring the owners who said it had to be banged shut much harder than you expect - which is far from ideal! Mould on the wall in the 2nd bedroom The entire house would benefit from an update and refresh - very tired. Garden had not been tidied, bearing in mind it was Feb, the grass and borders had clearly not be tidied away last year before winter and were overgrown with brambles. Garden gate on one side of the property perfectly secure, but the other side was a make do and mend with what appeared to be some metal garden furniture and a gate botched together in 'heath robinson' style. The photographs online did not reflect the reality - so if things have changed or been replaced - up date them. I did not go looking faults, but everything I have listed above was very evident. FYI - A pint of milk and half a pound of butter is not a welcome pack when check in is after 5pm and there is no tea/coffee/bread to enjoy after a long journey. The house was neither a cosy home from home or a stylised holiday cottage, it was drab and soulless and fell short of what I would have expected and indeed enjoyed in other Sykes properties. The smoke alarm battery failing at 4.45am on day 3 was the final straw, of what should have been a relaxing week's break, so we left. And I know you can't do anything about neighbouring properties, but the very dilapidated property right next door should have been mentioned! Would we recommend this property - no Would we go back - no All in all a very disappointing stay

In second double bedroom the wall behind the wardrobe was damp causing cloths in wardrobe to be damp. No instructions for heating system, we could only get hot water when heating was on such a waist. No instructions for music centre.

We are very sorry to hear the difficulties you have mentioned. Each of the bedrooms had a duvet sized to match the bed. I was at the property myself a few weeks ago and all the bedding was in place. I have asked the cleaning team to check the bedding and apologise for the inconvenience. I have also asked the cleaning team to address the mould issue you highlighted. A replacement can opener has been ordered. Instructions for the heating system are in the kitchen drawer, however the Hive system is very user friendly with a single dial on the front of the controller to set the temperature to a comfortable level. The property was recently fitted with a new combi boiler. There is no need to have the heating on for hot water. As soon as a hot tap is turned on the boiler automatically fires up to provide hot water. The taps may just need to run for a few seconds to flush through the cold water sitting in the pipes. It was a nice touch to have a cake, some milk and flowers etc on arrival, but the cleanliness was not good enough and we don’t think the property was worth what we paid given other accommodation we have stayed in previously. Nice garden and good location close to beach.

Dear Richard, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback and discuss your concerns. I am pleased to hear our welcome pack was enjoyed and I apologise Monarfon did not meet all of your standards on this occasion. We are now approaching the end of a busy year so whilst the weekly clean has been carried out, we have noticed the need for a deep clean again. I think it would be a good idea for Sykes to visit the property to check for themselves things that have been flagged up in the past and clearly have not been addressed. The third bedroom does not have a proper duvet it was just a mattress cover! There wasn't any hanging space so everything has to be left on the floor, you could easily put in a rail similar to bedroom two. The garden was a good size and secure for the dogs but a few less brambles would be nice. The property was close to the beach which we all enjoyed especially the dogs.

Thank you for taking the time to leave is your feedback. The issue you raised regarding mould has now been addressed with ventilation added to the utility room, a deep clean and redecoration. All three bedrooms do have wardrobes, although it sounds as if the guests before you may have moved the hanging rail into one of the other bedrooms. I do apologise for any inconvenience this caused you. We had not been made aware that the single bedroom duvet was not on the bed. I have raised this with the cleaners and asked that they check all beds are made for guests on arrival. This should not have happened and I sincerely apologise. Finally with regard the garden, we do have a gardener attend the property each week and have asked for the points raised to be addressed. Once again thank you for your feedback and we hope you would consider revisiting Monarfon again. Kind regards Rob Sharp Property Owner

The single room has no drawers only a small bedside cabinet and only a portable rail to hang a few coats. The rest of the clothing had to be stored in the floor. The double bedroom only had corner cubby hole that was hard to enter, the inside was dirty and there was black mould growing on the wall has there was was in the adjacent corner. The whole room smelt damp .The annex to the kitchen was also full of black mould and very dirty also the area just outside the side door. The outside toilet was unusable, full of rubbish and the door off the hinge. This property is well below expectable standards. There are many things that need attention. I am disappointed that Sykes has allowed this to be rented. We packed everything back in the car and left on Wednesday morning as we could not put up with it any longer. We may never use Sykes again. ,

I am really sorry to hear that our property did not meet up to your expectations. All bedrooms have a wardrobe, and we will consider additional drawer storage, however we need to balance this with the amount of floor space it would take up as many guests like the space that is available in the bedrooms. I do agree that there was a damp issue in the Utility room. This has now been addressed. The double bedroom wardrobe has been throughly cleaned and repainted to ensure there are no signs of the mould you mention. The design of the house limit the size of the wardrobe, but we do not advertise the property as having a 'walk in wardrobes' The rail in the single bedroom is about 2m long, this is larger than a standard wardrobe for hanging space and more than adequate for most guests. There is also additional storage for coats etc. under the stairs. The property is not advertised as having an outside toilet and this space is used for storage of tools, paint etc. the door should have been locked and I apologise for any inconvenience this caused. The property is exactly as described but could really do with some TLC to tidy it up a bit. Some damp areas in the utility room, debatable DIY here and there and a broken blind in the master bedroom. That said, this would not deter us from staying here again. The property is very spacious, has a great size enclosed garden which was perfect for the dogs, and the location is just perfect - just a 5 minute walk down to the beach and a 5 minute (uphill!) walk to the nearest pub. Beds were super-comfy too. Some instructions on the door code & locking it would be useful, as would easily accessible instructions for the appliances & heating; these had all been put away in the bench cupboards with a load of books & games so we had to go hunting for them. No visitors book left in the property, which was a shame as we always like to fill in & look back at previous comments too. Wouldn't prevent us staying here again though

Thank you for taking the time to provide us your feedback. We are so happy you had a great holiday. We have addressed the comment you highlighted regarding damp in the Utility room and the broken blind has also been repaired. Absolutely no complaints whatsoever and we would certainly be happy to stay there again. If there was anything I'd add to the cottage at all it would be a radio in the kitchen!

  • "The instructions to access the property do not mention the fact that the entry code needs to be entered on to the pad on the front door (just below the handle) and do not relate to the key safe (which is also on the wall like most rental properties)."

This omission caused us great confusion when we first arrived and took us 15 mins to discover that the key safe was actually redundant. The house itself is fairly basic but pretty functional and homely. The kitchen cupboards had a musty smell which remained on the plates and glasses. We found it better to leave cleaned kitchen items out on the side when not in use. There were no baking sheets at all for use in the oven with only the base for the grill available to cook items, which was fiddly and time consuming. The lack of a dishwasher is also a little frustrating. Aside of these issues, that could be very quickly remedied, the house was clean and warm. The bedrooms were a decent size with comfortable beds and efficient showers in both the en suite and family bedrooms. Very fast and effective Wi-fi and a good size TV. The addition of a cheap set top box would provide additional access to on-demand services not currently available. Great location for the beach and, overall, a pleasant stay.

  • "This is our second time visiting Monarfon with our two dogs."

The house is a fabulous size and the layout works well. Lovely en-suite to the main bedroom with a large walk in shower. The garden is large and I expect very pretty in summer. Sadly we experienced strong winds and lots of rain during our stay so only the dogs ventured into it briefly before running back to the warmth of the house. Tall fridge/freezer in the kitchen which is great if you feed your dogs raw food as plenty of room to keep it frozen and I believe the Benllech pet shop sells some raw food as well. Ideally situated for the wonderful Benllech beach with a nice pub just up the road (sadly restrictions in Wales meant pubs had to close at 6pm while we were there). We really enjoy everything Monarfon has to offer as a holiday

  • "The house was exactly as described and perfect for those with dogs."

A large enclosed garden. The facilities were modern and in great working condition. During our stay we had a minor water issue but contacted the owner of the house directly who was appreciative of the information and willing to help. Would definitely recommend.

  • "House and location were excellent."

Minor points just to help people would be some instructions regarding bins, and local information, however we realise this may not have been possible at this time due to Covid 19 Otherwise a very enjoyable week, with great walks and fantastic views and places to visit

  • "In these difficult times since Covid then some things are understandably difficult."

Although the accommodation met our needs it would have been good to know in advance that most of the things like books, games, dvds had been removed from the lounge area. Presumably to help with cleaning and contamination. I know this property has had some bad reviews and my view on this is that they are largely unfounded. It didn’t smell bad at all and all the bathroom facilities were very good. It’s obviously an old house but we were happy enough with it. The outside area could do with a good tidy up , it’s a big garden. The location is great and we enjoyed our stay. I would hesitate in recommending this property.

  • "The weather wasn't kind to us and I imagine that would be the case for many others, so it would be really useful if the property had an airer for drying clothes."

There is a washing line in the utility area but it wasn't long enough for wet clothes from 5 people and they all slide to one end on it anyway as it's such a steep incline. Also, a dishwasher would be appreciated as I was gutted to realise that our holiday was going to include a tonne of washing up through the week (you are also then contending with how well other users wash up before you, a machine is much more hygienic). The front door needs to be fixed as we couldn't get in initially and we had times where it was making random announcements. As far as Sykes go, I was a bit disappointed and frustrated there was no communication on where we stood with our booking in the event it needed to be cancelled due to COVID, we had to wait for months once we had paid the full price I feel like it was only common courtesy that there should have been something sooner to explain "In the event of...". We were asked for the balance when it still looked uncertain the holiday could go ahead and I feel there should have been some reassurance provided at that point at the very least. However, the property was lovely, very comfortable, pretty well-equipped and an excellent position for the beach. Shops were close by for the essentials and a great chippie.

Cottage was surprisingly roomy. We managed to fit 9 round the dining table - although two of our number were young children. Well enough equipped although we improvised with a few kitchen implements - my late mother in law would be proud. Enjoyable week’s holiday. Weather not bad for November which allowed us 4 walks with the dog. Very likely that we will visit again.
