  • "Beautiful property in an amazing location."

RAF jets most definitely an added bonus for us and we loved to watch them. We stayed as a party of four with our dog (who loved the garden). My parents stayed in the main cottage, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Hubby and I stayed in the garden annex which was prefect for us and has its own TV and kettle. We had a problem with a blocked toilet in the cottage but when we reported this to Menai Cottages, it was dealt with promptly and efficiently and followed up with a phone call the next day to check the problem was rectified, which it was. The property is approximately 1 mile down an estate road/track and lovely and rural. Wild rabbits play and nibble the grass in the garden. Pheasants, finches and a variety of birds enjoyed the wild bird food we took with us and we enjoyed watching them. The property description could do with an update as there is no longer an estate shop and there is no signage from the main road for the Bodior Estate. We wouldn’t hesitate to return to this property and would recommend it for anyone wanting a peaceful break, with the novelty of RAF jets.

  • "The cottage is very comfortable, spotlessly clean and has everything required for a lovely stay ."

We had a beautiful Christmas (complete with complimentary decorations) . The directions to the cottage could be updated and made clearer as there is no sign on the main entrance to the estate from the road and the cottage is very off the beaten track. The beach is also not walkable from the rear of the cottage (enclosed farmland) so a car drive is required ( only 5 minutes though ) . A really lovely cottage .

  • "Such a gorgeous, cosy cottage in our favourite part of the world."

We arrived in driving rain but felt immediately at home. Everything is just as it should be, the perfect holiday cottage for a total getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We didn't take dishwasher tablets with us or the absolute essentials such as sugar, salt, pepper, veg oil for cooking and the provision of these would be my only suggestion, as often they're there for general use in a holiday cottage. But I'm really clutching at straws - this cottage is divine and we can't wait to return. The owners are very lucky indeed to have such a lovely place. X

  • "Location Location."

. The property has amazing views towards the sea and mountains beyond. We agree with previous comments about the hedge cutting to maximise the views. The property is in a rural location ideal for those who want to “get away from it all” and enjoy nature at its best. The house has been furnished and equipped to a high standard. The lawned area large enough for the children to play. We especially enjoyed the 15 minute walk to the beach. During our stay we noticed a couple of security/ maintenance issues which Sykes dealt with promptly. We highly recommend this property and would like to return in the future.

  • "This cottage is a little gem."

Set in on a private estate, away from the hustle and bustle yet only a 15 minute walk to the beach. The jets and planes were an added bonus. A private display every day, even a spitfire! Only flying between 8am and 5:30pm. The bunk room is tiny but our 15 and 17 year olds manage fine. Resident adder in the front garden which came out daily to bask in the sunshine. We also saw a pair of buzzards, curlews, lizards too. Not much more you could need for a holiday away from it all. Thank you

  • "We had a lovely stay and there are lots of positives about the property."

It is in a lovely quiet location a 15 min walk to Silver Bay beach big garden and great views. It is fairly isolated with only a couple of farms nearby which we liked. Its a ten min drive to the nearest small shops in Valley. Also a five min drive to the pub and the main beach. The property itself is ok could do with a bit of improved maintenance especially the conservatory and decking area. The trees around the decking need cutting back and the decking needs repair and painting, I was a bit worried it might be unsafe as the wood looks very old and dry. The conservatory could do with a good clean and also a coat of paint. A bit more effort could be made with the garden. In general the house is comfortable fairly clean apart from few cobwebs here and there. In general a nice place to stay and practical if you have a dog with hard floors. The annex is nice. Should note the garden is not enclosed or secure for dogs to roam freely.

Thank you for Bara Brith. Normally cottages have a few more instructions, re rubbish, sheets and towels. We didn’t mind not having this. Also usually comments book for guests to leave experiences and ideas. Had issue with losing wifi from Wednesday of our stay. So couldn’t then use our phones and computer. Which was difficult as phone reception poor there, so cut off whilst at cottage.

We will stay again, in the future. Everything you need for your stay, is available. Very comfortable and the views are amazing. Nice walk to the beach, too. The bathroom door didn’t lock properly. Which was ok for us, but some people may want their privacy. The stone drive up-to the cottage, could do with more stone or the centre lowering. I had to drive on the grass, so it didn’t scratch the bottom of my car. Sykes were professional, efficient and helpful. Will use them again.

  • "I don't normally write reviews, but I feel like I should refute some of the points in Angela's review as it is currently the first one you see."

It is lovely here and felt miles from anywhere. The view is spectacular. The house has everything you need and is very comfortable. I didn't feel any of it was 'tired'. The large conservatory is such a bonus - you can feel part of the outdoors if it's too hot / windy / rainy out there. Yes there is an unmetalled track but we were absolutely fine in our hatchback to dodge a bump or two. Yes there are planes from the RAF base, but they weren't flying all day during our week, and they soon fly over (so the suggestion that 'we couldn't hold a conversation or watch TV' seems somewhat exaggerated). To be honest I soon found myself ignoring them. As for 'it's a bit of a drive to the shops' there are massive supermarkets in Holyhead only about 10 minutes away. And the Wifi seemed fine (in fact I almost wished it was worse so the temptation to use it wasn't there for once). The house is surrounded by wild flowers, and we saw and heard many different birds. Rabbits visit the garden and I saw a resident toad. Everything was clean and in working order, and I slept soundly in the massive comfy bed in the annex. I would book the cottage again!

  • "We have stayed at many Sykes holiday homes but would say based on previous accommodation this is a three star and not four."

Without a doubt the views are stunning and the cottage is remote. The drive down to the cottage is more a farm track. Absolutely fine for us as we have a 4 wheel drive but a car low to the ground you might have problems. This is something definitely to take into consideration when booking. We arrived on a Saturday. Checkin is at 5:00 which is late after a long journey. Covid regulations have finished so can't understand why it's such a late arrival time and early departure ! It was beautiful, so quiet ! This didn't last. Monday to Thursday and Friday morning we had low flying jests all day. Perhaps we picked a bad week but the noise was HUGE. We did Google before we came and knew we were near an RAF base so expected some noise but as it wasn't mentioned in previous reviews or booking information we were not prepared for the impact. Started at 8:00am and finished at 4:00. Great to watch but couldn't hold a conversation or watch the TV. without passing jets. This kind of spoilt the relaxing and peaceful holiday we were looking forward to. Going inside the cottage it was tastefully furnished with good quality soft furnishings. It does look tired in the kitchen and bathroom and needs refreshing. The bathroom radiator and towel rail were not attached to the wall very well. The cottage was also cold, if you have guest coming it would have been nice to have the heating on low. It would have been nice to have a pint of milk and a sachets of tea and coffee after a long journey. First time we have ever come across this. Bring plenty of your own supplies as it's a bit of a drive to the shops. There was a fruit cake. Setting was very comfortable and the kitchen was extremely well equipped with pots and pans etc. unfortunately we opened the dishwasher was there was dirty crockery left in it. The plates and spoons in the cupboards were also not the cleanest. We decided to wash everything but found the dishwasher didn't work. Contacted Sykes twice but it was never fixed. As it says in the booking information internet is intermittent however if you are in the annex there is no internet. We did attempt to sleep in the cottage the first night but the bed is absolutely terrible. Every time you move it squeaks and it's hard. We gave up and moved to the annex the second night. Fortunately there were only two of us. Lovely comfy bed in the annex but you have to take the internet across. There are some beautiful walks around and loved watching the farm animals. We took our two Labradors who enjoyed the freedom of roaming a large garden. It's not enclosed but nothing around to harm them. There are farm animals but we are surrounded back home by cows and sheep so ours don't bother with them and don't venture towards them. Saying that, the cows had calves so we were cautious to be mindful not to cause any stress to the animals. The seating outside has wonderful views. Lovely picnic table and BBQ area. There is some wood decking and along with the outside of the property needs a coat of varnish. This is one of the reasons why I'd say 3 star and not 4. It just needs a bit of care. The bunk room is very small and only suitable for small children. However for children there is plenty of space to roam and enjoy the outdoors. There is a steep drop by the picnic table that could be an issue if very small children were not watch .

  • "We enjoyed our stay, lovely setting and the property was well furnished, comfortable and reasonably clean."

The property could do with a bit of TLC in a couple of areas, the decking needs cleaning and there is some damp in the small bunk bedroom. Unfortunately the oven was broken which was a bit of a pain and given the time of year it wasn’t possible for the owner to do much about it. That said, the issue was promptly resolved to our satisfaction. We would love to revisit one day as there is a lot to like about the property and it’s location.

  • "Here wasn't a Welcome Pack or contact details of owner/manager or local services."

The property was well furnished and equipped and reasonably clean. However, there were a number of issues regarding lack of maintenance and repair and presumably there are no inspections than the cleaning company. There were three main issues which could compromise health/safety. These were taps supplying near scalding temperature water almost instantly. The built in oven wasn't secured to the housing and it tilted forwards when the oven door was opened. This almost caused an accident when a heavy, hot casserole dish was being removed. There was an area of wet plaster and skirting in the bunkroom on the party wall with the bathroom. This was coated with a white mould and had to be removed before we could let the children sleep there. There was black mould on the both bath/ shower rooms in seals and around fittings. The taps in both whb were loose and the whb and toilet roll holder in the main bathroom were hanging off the wall. The shower in the annexe is partly blocked and drains very slowly leaving you standing in a deep puddle. None of the three extractor fans were working. The lighting in the kitchen was inadequate because the four ceiling lights were too dim and the lights were broken or missing under the wall units. The keysafe on the annexe was broken and fell to the ground when opened. Quite a heavy piece of metal landing on your foot. The vacuum cleaner didn't pick up properly and had a bad smell. The decking is a mess with rotten handrail on the short edge over a 2m drop. It is not secured properly to the wall. The foliage around it obscures the view when seated. We think that the rental charged is not good value giving the problems.

It was exceptionally clean and cosy. The WiFi was much better than expected from the property listing and the beds were bigger too. The kitchen was very well equipped and it was a relief to find a decent sized freezer also. The separate Master Suite was fantastic and the whole cottage had high quality bedding and furniture. The balcony was brilliant but we only made it out there twice as our week had the unwelcome visitors of Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin. We stayed in the cottage for three weeks for a second time and it was superb. We would like to tell, that the Manager and his wife were very kindly and helpful. The only thing what we didn't like is the time to arrive (5.00 o'clock p.m.) and the time to leave in the morning (9.00 o'clock a.m.) It's too late, when you come from far away and it's too early, when you have so much time to drive to a ferry, which is going away in the evening. Corona isn't the reason, if you say this. It would be great, if you change this.

It was lovely and cosy and really clean. The only reason I wouldn't give it five stars was the hot water was really dangerous and meant that my partner burnt her leg on the hot water tap and we couldn't leave the children to have a shower on there own but apart from that the place was great.

  • "Very clean and welcoming."

A lovely cottage in a quiet, out of the way situation. Two reasons why it didn't reach 5 stars; some people might find the noise of the jets from RAF Valley intrusive (we didn't, being used to this part of Anglesey) and the garden being totally unfenced. Having said that we loved it so much that we've booked it again.

No information package with any info re property, doctor, recycling etc. Most outside lighting not working so extremely dark walking to detached bedroom. Property was not cleaned well, cobwebs everywhere and bathroom fans very dirty and noisy. Cupboards containing food from previous lettings (how old?) One dining room chair needs repairing and one other chair loose (needs tightening with allen key). The hot water was scalding hot!! All in all we loved the location and size of the property but some TLC is urgently needed to bring the property up to the standard as advertised.

About the location

RHOSCOLYN

Valley 2 miles; Trearddur Bay 3 miles; Holyhead 5 miles.

Located on Holy Island, three miles from Trearddur Bay, Rhoscolyn is a small village with a church and primary school and is the most southerly place on Holy Island. Rhoscolyn also offers an excellent pub on the lane down to the beach, which is renowned for its gastro food, and the beach itself with its slipway, ideal for small dinghies and power boats, is a popular family destination throughout the summer owing to the sheltered cove and gently sloping sands. Also excellent cliff-top walks can be enjoyed and an abundance of wildlife can be seen, often including seals on the headland. Just two miles away is the village of Valley, which has a Post Office, chemist, shops and eating places, plus the nearby resort of Trearddur Bay is situated on the western shore of the island and is truly beautiful with a great sweep of low grassy coastline indented with rocky coves and fine Blue Flag sandy beaches. There are shops, pubs and restaurants in Trearddur Bay itself and nearby Holyhead offers a wider range of amenities, including a very good leisure centre, supermarkets, harbour front, a marina, the world’s second longest breakwater and exciting day trips to Dublin on the ferry. Watersports, bathing, sailing, windsurfing and horse riding are the main activities in the summer months, plus golfers will enjoy the excellent Holyhead 18 hole links golf course, and the area is also a great place for nature lovers with renowned birdwatching at the South Stack Lighthouse RSPB Reserve. An excellent location with plenty to see and do!
