  • “We really enjoyed our stay at Capel Ogwen.”

The house was cosy and had the right amount of space for 10-12 people. It was lovely to be able to eat in the dining room together, and also spread out on the sofas. Having the estuary at the back of the house was wonderful for the birdwatchers and we were really lucky with the autumn sunshine too. We would definitely like to return.

The property

Sitting just on the coast not far from the University town of Bangor, Capel Ogwen is an impressive holiday house!

You are welcomed via a vast lodged gateway through which you drive down a mile of private drive with some lovely wooded and country views.

Capel Ogwen is the former gatekeepers home and is now a holiday house offering ample space and character for family or friends wanting to holiday in a group. The large sitting room has comfortable sofas and chairs next to a lovely open fire, which adds extra warmth and cosiness in the winter.

There’s a TV with Freeview and a DVD player.

French doors lead out into the garden. Just off the sitting room is a twin bedroom on the ground floor. Kitchen has everything you need - an electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

There’s a serving hatch from the kitchen into the dining room. The dining room has a large dining table and chairs with the added benefit of an open fire on colder evenings. A door from the kitchen leads out into the double garage, where there is table tennis and darts for entertainment on a quiet evening in. There is a ground floor shower room with shower, loo and wash hand basin.

A further cloakroom with loo and wash basin. On the first floor are two large double bedrooms and three twin rooms.

All of these rooms, except one, have views over the wall and out to sea, with Anglesey beyond.

On the first floor is a shower room with shower, wash hand basin and loo and bathroom with bath, wash hand basin and loo. Outside are ample grounds to wander, but there is a garden area laid to lawn with shrubs.

This private space is ideal for family games in the summer, or a cuppa in the sunshine!

There's a paved terrace area for al fresco suppers or brunches.

A door in the garden wall opens onto the fabulous Ogwen estuary, where the tide comes gently into the ribbon of shingle and grass.

Sea trout and salmon fishing in the River Ogwen can be arranged with the Penrhyn Estate Office, if you wish.

The Traeth Lavan Nature Reserve covers approximately 6,000 acres of sands and mudflats; this is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and in midwinter, the sands attract masses of waders and wildfowl.

Ideal for birdwatchers! Capel Ogwen sits inside a ten-foot wall, offering shelter from the winds off the Straits.

To the south are incredible views across lush, green fields towards the Carneddau mountains.

To the North are views of the Lavan Sands and Anglesey.

Capel Ogwen is the perfect holiday house for parties and family reunions.

Bangor is a university town on the North Wales coast with a large range of shops, bars and restaurants. It is the main crossing point for the Isle of Anglesey with two road bridges across the Menai Strait. Across the water, the castle and pier at Beaumaris make a lovely day out, or you can catch a boat to enjoy a trip out to Puffin Island. The Anglesey Coastal Path takes in beautiful scenery, and the island is home to many fine beaches including Rhosneigr, Trearddur Bay and Red Wharf Bay. The NT mansion Plas Newydd is on the island, while on the mainland further NT properties can be found including Penrhyn Castle and Bodnant Gardens. The spectacular mountains and lakes of Snowdonia are just a short drive way, with plenty of castles, beaches and other attractions on offer in this wonderful region.
