"We absolutely loved our stay at Capel Ogwen."
The owner had thoughtfully provided all things for a comfortable stay welcoming us with a fruit cakes, welsh cake, 4 pints of milk, handwash, bin bags, cooking oil. The property is a set in a beautiful location, has a large garden, and a TT table in the garage for play time. We were 11 of us, had loads of fun indoors during the rainy evenings. Only downside is they seemed to have mowed the garden just the day of our arrival and we landed up bringing in lots of cut grass everytime we stepped out of the property, we needed additional cleaning throughout our stay. Overall we will stay again in future. Thank you.
"The house is ideal for our big family."
We couldn't believe the secret garden to the beach and couldn't get over the private drive. There were a few chipped cups and cracks in the walls but this added to the charm. The oil boiler is very strong smelling in the kitchen when you turn the hot water on. Overall it was amazing, my nana even said that she didn't want to go to sleep on our last night as she didn't want the holiday to be over.
"We enjoyed our weekend and found the house comfortable and a relaxing place to stay."
One major issue was that there was no oil for heating on our first night. This was swiftly resolved by Karl and Jason on Saturday but we continued to have issues with the boiler cutting out. Luckily there was plenty of wood so the open fire kept us pretty cosy.
"Fantastic week despite the weather."
Capel Ogwen was a perfect place for a family get together. Beautiful setting, private and safe. The children and dogs loved exploring the outside - woods, gardens, castle, beach, river, nature reserve with bird hides all a stones throw away. The house has everything you could want and was warm and cosy despite the storms outside. It is an old house so not without it flaws but we loved it. Would love to go back one day.
"For a peaceful relaxing stay with friends this is the perfect house."
The house does need some attention but it's so friendly and welcoming you can easily overlook its flaws. We love Capel Ogwen, its location and views.
"Only thing I can give feedback on is the beds maybe make the doubles king-size or super king-size they would look amazing in the rooms not a lot of people have doubles these days specially when you’ve possibly got children sharing with you other than that amazing place beautiful fantastic space great garden enclosed for the children and animals love that there was a bedroom downstairs for my mum to sleep in that’s a great idea!"
! I loved the Gateway onto the Astrea where you can walk the dog and children can run off a little bit esteem Highly recommended would possibly go back in the summer

We thoroughly enjoyed our christmas at Capel Ogwen this year 2021 and we would really like to re book asap for the same time next year christmas 2022 if possible Thankyou very much from all of us x
"Gate on garden to make it dog proof."
Loved the views and that we were able to take the dogs into the woods or onto the banks of the River Ogwen estuary for walks. We ate our meals at the large kitchen. We really enjoyed our stay.
"House tired but charming in a wonderful location."
Upstairs quilts (13.5 tog) too heavy for summer. Could do with a gate at the back to make garden dog proof.
"Capel Ogwen was a wonderful place to stay."
It is a beautiful, welcoming, spacious house - there were 10 of us from 4 months to 75 years, plus a dog, and we could spread out and feel at home. It had everything we needed. There is a great garden and grounds. The garden door leading to the estuary beach was used most days, and we enjoyed walks in the woods. A magical place - we would love to return. Just a detail: The amount of laundry that now has to go in the laundry bags could not fit in the bags provided. so had to be piled on top.
"Absolute fantastic place."
It is what it says on the tin. Had such a relaxing week with close family. So much to do…but away from the crowds. Perfect place for dogs and their owners. Would definitely recommend and would certainly come back.
"We had a lovely week at the property, it was very central to other attractions."
A few things would of improved the stay, parts of the large range cooker didn’t work. If you wanted to cook a full 3 course meal you would have had to start at 7 in the morning to be ready for 4.00pm. On our arrival we found the kettle was broke, I reported it through the letting agent and we had a replacement within two hours. Can’t complain about that, excellent response. The part I loved the most was the nature reserve out the back, if you are a keen bird watcher this is the place to be. Would recommend it and will be returning again.
Thank you for your feedback. The oven has been replaced since your visit. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay Property Owner
"The only nice thing about this property is its location so if you're looking for somewhere to spend quality time with friends or family, - find somewhere else!"
On arrival we were greeted by an appallingly dirty kitchen, ovens, cutlery, cupboards and hand written notes telling us the oven wasn't working and that we should not light the open fire as the chimney was blocked. Also handles were missing off cupboard doors in the kitchen leaving screws sticking out instead. A phone call to Menai was met with a surly response and no apology. The staff who attended to perform the supposed "deep clean" the following day rudely and angrily complained to us that they had to "give up my Sunday for you!" After their visit there was still filth left on the kitchen floor and loose left over sweetcorn in the freezer. Unacceptable. There was no spare cupboard space for food items and the fridge/freezer size is completely inadequate for a property supposed to accommodate 12 people. There was damp peeling plaster in the lounge and the sofas were so grubby we had to cover them with our own blankets before we could sit on them. The dining room table was covered in a sticky film making it too gross to use. Bed mattresses are old lumpy and uncomfortable and the difficulty sleeping was not helped by the cockerels in the hen house next door crowing loudly from 3.30am til dawn! The two showers both have black grimy sealants on the interior - the sort of shower cabinet where you don't want to be in there in case you touch the sides. We expected to be compensated for the dreadful state we found this property in and sent photographs- but No - Menai and the owners refused to consider any monetary recompense whatsoever. Will not use this company again and suggest you don't either.
I am sorry you were dissatisfied despite the actions we took to remedy your issues. Property Owner
"Our 8th consecutive year for a family holiday and had a great time with some lovely weather."
As ever wonderful location especially the Ogwen estuary. The local pub The Slate is well worth a visit. There has been some progress in updating CAPEL OGWEN and this is to be welcomed.Still needs several areas of improvement particularly some crockery needs replacing and beds in ground floor bedroom very uncomfortable !
"The property suits the requirements of our family very well and the lifting of the Coronavirus restrictions took place just in time for us to have a lovely holiday - just what we all needed."
Advance knowledge of the code for the lock on the front gate would have been useful.
"I loved going back to Capel Ogwen it was where I grew up and Capel Ogwen was our home for 10 years!"
Thanks so much it hasn’t changed a bit and is still a wonderful house in a beautiful part of Wales! Clare
"What a wonderful place to stay lots of room inside and out and very peaceful, out of the back gate and you are straight on the beach."
It is exactly 1 mile from the house down private road to gatehouse so very private,at gate house cross over the road 1 minute walk and you will find the Slate Hotel/Bar/Restaurant very nice and friendly place.I look forward to staying again, many thanks Tony and Family
"Large, well equipped house."
Very private and perfect for groups of friends and family. Large garden area and seating outside so I’d imagine it would be great in the summer. Well located for ZipWorld- one site is around 5 mins drive. Lovely restaurant just over from the private drive called The Slate, food and staff were excellent (we did pre book and pre ordered food) Highly recommend this place, all of us enjoyed the stay
"We really enjoyed our stay at Capel Ogwen."
The house was cosy and had the right amount of space for 10-12 people. It was lovely to be able to eat in the dining room together, and also spread out on the sofas. Having the estuary at the back of the house was wonderful for the birdwatchers and we were really lucky with the autumn sunshine too. We would definitely like to return.
"The place is just amazing, it has it all, big garden in the back, the beach behind the house, a river nearby and the place is big and cosy."
"Didn't give top Mark's as double mattress on upstairs bed needs replacing, not very comfortable."
Loved the new colour in the dining room and the new garden furniture. We were 3 generations holidaying together and it suited everyone. Just a note about shutting the doors at the end of the drive as in your information pack it seemed quite important, whoever lives in the other house always left them open. We had a lovely week and hope to be back
"The property was an ideal peaceful setting for our extended family with young grand-children."
The layout provided suitable sleeping arrangements where babies and toddlers could be close to their parents and the large almost fully enclosed garden was a safe playground. The large dining room was a wonderful room which accommodated all of us eating together. We would happily come back again. Things which could be improved were the washing machine and dryer which did not seem to work properly and more details about waste disposal / recycling arrangements particularly as the wheelie bin was full from the previous occupants.
"The cottage was beautifully Clean and tidy when we arrived, and the person responsible should be congratulated on a job well done."
The only thing that I could mention was the downstairs WC was difficult to flush, and may need attention. Other than that everything was just fine, including the weather.
"We have visited Capel Ogwen many times."
It is a magical place and any issues with the house are totally negated by its position, views and character. We were disappointed that the people who prepared the place left so many issues rather than sorting. Firstly in the main bedroom( right at top of the stairs)half of each curtain (one set) had no curtain hooks and as such the curtains wouldn’t close (but the flowing unattached curtains were displayed beautifully). The bath panel was pulled away. The crockery and cutlery were dirty and had to be washed before they were fit to use and evidence of previous guests was evident- paper confetti and glitter remaining in dining room. My towel had a large hole in it and the skirting boards in our bedroom ( main left) were filthy. None of these things spoiled the visit for us but it did give the impression that the property was not really cared for. We still love it though!!
"We stayed in Capel Ogwen, near Bangor."
We have stayed there with our extended family every year at least once since 2009. It has been the scene of many family memories. It is an idyllic setting for family holidays.
"We had a lovely Christmas break at Capel Ogwen after the initial shock of having to clean mainly the kitchen but also the lounge."
I had to remove all the crockery from the cupboards to clean inside (the cups and glasses were actually sticking to the surface because of the grease), the ovens were dirty and the top of the fridge had grease and dirt which had obviously been there for some time (the outside of the cupboards still need a good clean, especially the tops). The alcoves near the fire in the lounge were filthy from the open fire and the cushions on the settees were worn with zips broken and the settee arms were quite stained. I then found that one of the double mattresses had given up the ghost with a threadbare sheet on it with a hole in it and most of the towels were practically threadbare. The garage, which was supposed to be a games room, was just a mess with broken tiles piled in a corner, old furniture and appliances in there all filthy. Luckily Menai Cottages you saved the day obtaining a new mattress on Christmas Eve, my partner bought cushions, towels and throws for the settees from home and we got about enjoying our Christmas with family. I must say I expected the house to be a tad tired from the cost but I didn't expect it to be dirty. A lovely decorated Christmas tree was provided and fresh flowers in all the downstairs rooms which were a lovely touch. Also we were provided with lots of logs and coal for the fire. The location is superb and we all had a great Christmas but I was practically on the verge of going home on that initial day as I spent the first 2 hours just cleaning the kitchen!! Have attached photos - the fuzzy photo is the dirt and grease still on top of the kitchen units and the wipes are from cleaning the inside, the garage speaks for itself.
"Roomy and well equipped holiday home."
Beautiful position next to the coastal flats, with the hills within an easy drive.
"Loved the house, large enough for our group, spacious bedrooms, loved the ..."
Loved the house, large enough for our group, spacious bedrooms, loved the separate dining area, great location for exploring Angelsey
"The property was spacious with pleasant gardens and the close proximity to the beach was a bonus."
However, rooms such as the main sitting area were very dark making it very difficult to read, sew, do jigsaw puzzles etc The twin bedded room at the end of the house had no drawer storage nor any hooks on the door and the few coat hangers in the small wardrobe were for.children's clothes. Opening and closing the gate each day was a bit of a nuisance as the closing mechanism was a bit stiff and the doors were heavy.
"Cottage was absolutely beautiful and I will be booking again."
Only reason for 4 stars is some areas where not as clean as they could have been and games room in garage was disappointing. Table tennis table was quite ropey and there was a very odd smell
"The cottage was very nice, large rooms, the only down side was the kitchen it was a bit small for 12 guests when trying to cook, as a hill walking group we had all our meals with us, there was not a lot of room to store."
"Great location and roomy house."
Decor was a bit dated, especially the dining room where every wall and ceiling was red. Furniture was a bit old looking as well. Kitchen was just about adequate but could have been more freezer space. Otherwise a house with great potential. We would go there again if we had another family holiday in that area.
"Wonderful location on Penrhyn Estate next to Menai Straits with access to river Ogwen estuary and Bird Reserve."
House comfortable with good sized rooms and three good bath/shower rooms. But several aspects of the interior need better maintenance and a higher standard of cleaning.
"Excellent location and charming house."
Lighting in sitting room was inadequate as not bright enough for reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, drawing etc.
