  • "We had an amazing time."

Loved the house. But all was spoilt by the pressure to be out by 9am. How can 10 people possibly be up,showered, breakfasted, beds stripped, fridge cleared, waste disposed of and cars packed - by 9am???

Fabulous house which is ideal for large families and pets. I love the library which is peaceful and snug with the real log fire. Views are stunning and is surrounded by magnificent places to walk. The white eagle pub is only a 5 minute walk and the beach only 10 minute walk. We will definitely come again.

  • "Plas was absolutely lovely… just as described and you wanted for nothing, the house is very well equipped."

The location is great, with a pub a minutes walk down the road and the beach also within walking distance. The house is spacious, comfortable and clean. You can’t access all of it, for example the balcony, but I’m assuming that’s a health and safety issue. It had no negative impact on our trip. My only issue was the check out time of 9am… we arrived at 4pm on Friday and had to check out by 9 on the Sunday… an extra hour would have been welcomed but we had fun all the same!

The living room was so cosy with the log fire on and the bathrooms were amazing. We will definitely be booking another holiday there. Just two little things though if you could provide more toilet rolls and provide firmer pillows? These are only tiny things though. Many thanks for the welcome pack And letting us stay in your fabulous house.

Full of character and even more interesting on the inside than the outside. We stayed for two windy and rainy weeks in January and enjoyed it immensely invigorating cliff walks etc. For a big place it is really cosy inside especially in the lounges with the wood burners. • "I don’t normally respond to feedback requests, but I emailed Menai a month ago to express my concerns and as they haven’t troubled themselves with a response, I’m publishing them here."

We love the house, it has great sentimental importance to us (we hosted our wedding reception here in 2016 with a marquee in the garden), however, I don’t feel it’s being particularly well looked after and that aggrieves me. Before we arrived, in fact when were in the car on the way there, Menai called us to tell us there were challenges with the central heating - that the radiators would need turning down as the heating was on constantly. We accepted this - the electrician came on the Saturday (we haven’t noticed a difference). However, this is but one of many problems, that indicate that the property is simply not being maintained adequately. This list is by no means exhaustive, but in the time we were there we identified - - Extensive and significant peeling of paint across the house and in numerous rooms - this damages the atmosphere (I’m sure it’s obvious why) - instances of black mould, most notably and particularly in the back toilet downstairs beyond the utility room - this is a health hazard - the shower in the back of the property hums loudly like a steam train when it’s used - this means we can’t shower once the kids are in bed - the radiators by those back bedrooms hum loudly in the middle of the night , this has bothered me as I’ve tried to go to sleep and I think woken one of the kids up over the weekend - the signal to the sky box is not tuned in properly and on a quiet night with little inclement weather, the system cut out repeatedly (this is the only TV in the house and so with small kids, that can be a problem) - we found a number of radiators with their thermostatic valves taken off (I couldn’t reattach them) and so the heating for these radiators could not be turned up or down - the sofas (which are the same as were here in 2016) are clearly very ‘well loved’ and are screaming out for replacement. The cushions are threadbare (which you must know as they have loose covers), the back of one has a large hole in it - some of the mattresses have clearly enjoyed long and illustrious careers and are in need of retirement - the springs offer little to no support and in one of the double beds, the mattresses are so worn that they are no longer the same height (the middle double bedroom over the back door) - the Bath which overlooks the parking courtyard has a dangerous fault - when the water drains from it, it leaks down through the ceiling in the kitchen, down the wall and onto/into the plugs/light switches above the dishwasher and drenches the floor - this could cause a serious electrical problem. The water isn’t draining properly, that bath cannot be safely used until a plumber has stopped the leak - the back door leading out of the main living room does not meet fire regulations - there is a ‘knack’ to unlocking it, which we can usually manage. However, if we had to manage it in a fire, I wouldn’t bet my children’s lives on it. That lock absolutely must be replaced now - the door handle for the back door has rusted off - we have found the odd stain to the carpet, not the end of the world but not the right ambiance either - some of the towels had stains - in truth, the internet is too slow for the devices of 2022 - the window of the ground floor bedroom is closed only by a single hand latch - this is not secure and to me represents a security risk I sent clear photos to Menai of many of these concerns. We love this property, it pains us to see it falling into disrepair. However, the listing and the condition are not as consistent as they should be. I told Menai about this by email on 19DEC22. I’m writing this on 14JAN23, as at now, they have not responded. I rated myself as unlikely to recommend Menai because in my list of concerns are two serious safety concerns and they have seemingly done nothing.

It has a cook’s kitchen, plenty of space and comfortable beds. We noticed an improvement over both housekeeping and maintenance compared with our previous visit. The house was so much bigger than expected. The surrounding area is magnificent, perfect for lots of walks. The gardens are perfect for dogs and a lovely country pub is only a 5 minute walk away. The beach and cliff tops are only an 8 minute walk away. The locals were very welcoming at the church which again is only 2 minutes away. You will need a car to get to any shops or Trearddur bay, which is well worth a visit for the beach and restaurants. Only downsides where that we was unable to use the main log burner due to the glass being broken in the door and a 2nd tv would be helpful in such a large house.

The house itself is the best equipped holiday home I’ve rented in regards to the kitchen, the welcome basket was packed full of goodies. There is a fabulous history to the home and it has beautiful period features. My only gripe is that it’s in serious need of some tlc and an uplift which a home of this calibre needs. We as a family loved staying so much we even viewed a property in the area for sale, if this one ever came on the market we would jump on it.

The house needs a lot of TLC (mainly the sofas in the main room and carpets throughout). Also would have been good to have been able to open more windows. There was also a leak from the bathroom into the kitchen above the dishwasher. I also think that the arrival and departure times are crazy. You effectively only have 6 days but are paying for 7 as 6.00 pm is far too late for check-in especially if you are traveling a long way. And 9.00 am too early to leave! All that side I would recommend the house and may return at a later date.

  • "Great stay overall."

The central heating seemed to be on a timer which we couldn’t change and there was electric heaters dotted around so made us wonder if it was quite old and wasn’t working as it should. It was warm in the main lounge/ kitchen with the fire, however our group had small babies with us. 3 under 1 and it was very cold in the night, we slept with our baby in the bed as I felt it was too cold in the room for her in her crib so that wasn’t ideal as we wouldn’t do co sleeping normally but I was worried about her. The weather was relatively mild too over new year so it could have been a lot colder. As adults under the sheets though it was fine! House is a good layout for big group and well equipped, everything you need in the kitchen to make meals. A little tired here and there furniture wise but comfortable and cosy, we had a great stay and there was lovely views and walks from the house. We really enjoyed our stay overall. One thing to note if taking young children, the walls are thick stone so the signal on baby monitors is very weak- all 3 different baby monitors had this issue so they had to be left in the hallway and we had to keep going out frequently to check the monitors so harder to relax in that sense. Would return as a group of adults but perhaps not with younger babies unless in summer when it wouldn’t be cold. Nice welcome package on arrival! Great to read about the history of the house, house is very spacious too.

The strict 18:00pm entry time needs sorting, especially as with our winter booking you've lost daylight before you arrive. That said you know you're on to a winner when the only fault you can find is a lack of pint pots to poor your bottle of real ale or draught Guinness in to in the selection of glasses. Plas was the ideal accommodation & base for my 50th birthday weekend with friends, chosen in part for it's proximity to the White Eagle where the food on Saturday night did not disappoint. My partner & I then spent the rest of the week exploring the island, had a walking day up Snowdon & even a drive down to Portmeirion which was in easy reach. Really liked Plas & wouldn't hesitate to go back again some time.

However, there were a few unwelcome and unexpected issues. Firstly the fridge and freezer in the utility room were filthy and I mean filthy, we had to thoroughly clean and disinfected both before they could be used, not something you want to start doing to that degree, especially when you could only check in at 6pm. The settees in the living/ dining room were dirty, old and uncomfortable and needed replacing a long time ago, along with the stained carpet. Some TLC needed in this lovely old house. All that said, we had a great family holiday and could have stayed longer.

  • "The shower in the downstairs en-suite was not working."

We had specifically chosen the property for my mum's 80th birthday so she could have a room / shower downstairs. Looking back at previous reviews it is now clear the shower hadn't been working in August and so had not been fixed. Did the caretaker think guests wouldn't notice? When we arrived there was a curtain and pole left on the stairs. We found that one bedroom curtain had come off the wall and just been left. So one room had no curtain all week. None of the upstairs windows opened apart from in one bedroom so no fresh air! Also noted in previous reviews. No instructions for the central heating so we couldn't use it. Other niggles like window blinds broken. For an expensive rental property this was all very disappointing and unacceptable. We rang Sykes Cottages and no caretaker came to check on concerns. (Plumber came and went on Monday.)

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry you were disappointed. The issue you raised with the shower was not an ongoing one and we are pleased the plumber was able to show you that the shower could continue to be used while waiting for the relevant part to be ordered. Plas is a listed building and remedial repair works have been scheduled for the upstairs windows when the property becomes vacant. Windows can be opened at either end of the upstairs area and fans provided for the really hot weather. Guest feedback is appreciated and all issues checked and remedied. Property Owner

Located on Holy Island, three miles from Trearddur Bay, Rhoscolyn is a small village with a church and primary school and is the most southerly place on Holy Island. Rhoscolyn also offers an excellent pub on the lane down to the beach, which is renowned for its gastro food, and the beach itself with its slipway, ideal for small dinghies and power boats, is a popular family destination throughout the summer owing to the sheltered cove and gently sloping sands. Also excellent cliff-top walks can be enjoyed and an abundance of wildlife can be seen, often including seals on the headland. Just two miles away is the village of Valley, which has a Post Office, chemist, shops and eating places, plus the nearby resort of Trearddur Bay is situated on the western shore of the island and is truly beautiful with a great sweep of low grassy coastline indented with rocky coves and fine Blue Flag sandy beaches. There are shops, pubs and restaurants in Trearddur Bay itself and nearby Holyhead offers a wider range of amenities, including a very good leisure centre, supermarkets, harbour front, a marina, the world’s second longest breakwater and exciting day trips to Dublin on the ferry. Watersports, bathing, sailing, windsurfing and horse riding are the main activities in the summer months, plus golfers will enjoy the excellent Holyhead 18 hole links golf course, and the area is also a great place for nature lovers with renowned birdwatching at the South Stack Lighthouse RSPB Reserve. An excellent location with plenty to see and do!
