About the location

BALQUHIDDER, PERTHSHIRE, SCOTLAND

Callander 13 miles; Stirling 24 miles; Glasgow 54 miles; Edinburgh 68 miles

The Braes of Balquhidder is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Steeped in history and legend, the Celts believed it to be a ‘thin place’ where the boundary between the spiritual world and the earthly world is minimal. Rob Roy MacGregor, the infamous 17th century outlaw who lived in and around the area, is buried in the ruins of the first Balquhidder kirk which dates from 1631. Inside the present kirk, built in 1855, is the St. Angus gravestone, an early Christian missionary who bought Christianity to the area in the 7th century. Balquhidder is a place of songs, stories, ley lines and cup stones. As a test of strength, people throughout the ages have attempted to lift a stone (94kg) onto a neolithic plinth named the Pudraic stone. This ancient ritual continues today, and the site is only a stone’s throw from here if you want to have a go. Along one of the many walks is Creag anTuirc (Boars rock), the ancient rallying place of the Clan MacLaren where once beacons were lit. Kirkton Glen is a three-hour loop along the forest track up into the hills. If you would like to explore the area whether on land or on water, mountain bikes, e-bikes, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards are available for hire from Roll Outdoors, at the entrance to the glen. A variety of eateries are nearby, including a 5-mile drive to The Broch Café in Strathyre, renowned for its Scottish breakfasts (closed January and February), or perhaphs visit Mhor 84 for a spot of lunch in the sun, or for something a little more special, head to the top of the geln for a fine dining experience to remember at Monachyle Mhor. Balquhidder is a magical, mystical setting in which to enjoy a relaxed holiday or use as a base to tour this beautiful area of Scotland.
