However, over many years we have booked numerous 4 and 5 star properties through agents who have been since taken over by Sykes. As Annielea Cottage has been graded by Sykes as “4 tick”, we expected its standards to reach approx a 4 star standard. It did not. The exterior of the property is decidedly scruffy - dirty and peeling paint, dirty windows and a disintegrating doormat. The exterior double doors do not close properly and therefore the vestibule is also dirty with another another filthy door mat. The photograph on Sykes website of the “formal” dining room shows a dark wooden table and 6 matching chairs. The only furniture in that room is a cheap pine-effect (plastic?) table with 2 matching benches and 2 chairs. The bed was fairly comfortable, although very low. The sofas were far from comfortable. The bathroom is big and has obviously been recently installed. Shower was efficient. Wash hand basin was tiny - would suit a small cloakroom but not big bathroom. Only 1 hand towel was provided. We didn’t use the cooker. Hob was old and metal rings around hob plates were dirty. None of the furniture looked new (apart from the TV and floor lamp in sitting room). Rather it looked as if it had been sourced from a junk shop. Nothing matched. Coffee table in sitting room had been painted white. Anything laid on it stuck to the paint and it is consequently covered in scruffy marks. Similarly soft furnishings were of very poor quality, especially the curtains. We will be interested in Sykes’ comments. This experience will make us wary of trusting their “tick” ratings in future.
