My husband and myself booked a week’s stay at the Kennels Mount Stuart. The cottage is situated on the grounds of Mount Stuart, set within the beautiful gardens. Due to Covid-19 Mount Stuart stately home was closed and the restaurant etc. On arrival there was no contact/communication, it would’ve been nice to have had a phone call at least. Very noticeable straight away was the lack of cleanliness, the bathrooms were not up to standard, the tops of the skirtings were very dusty as was the towel rail. I expected a very high standard especially during these circumstances. The doors were grubby, just not good enough. Also there was no WiFi and TV was restricted viewing. We stayed two nights due to the disappointment. For an unknown reason we were disturbed by a dogs single bark, at the same time on both nights, very strange as there seemed to be no dogs around.

About the location

ROTHESAY, ISLE OF BUTE

Port Bannatyne 2.2 miles; Kilchattan Bay 7 miles

Although its castle dates from the 13th Century, the seaside town of Rothesay became very popular as a tourist destination in the Victorian era when many Glaswegians would go ‘doon the watter’ (down the River Clyde) and across on the ferry to Bute. Today there is much to do and see on this beautiful island which is very accessible by ferry crossing, either the 35 minute trip from Wemyss Bay or else the shorter 5 minute crossing to the north of the island from Colintraive. Visit the castle ruins in the centre of town, enjoy the stunning scenery with coastal walks or on one of the cycle routes around the island and visit historic Mount Stuart House as well as its superb gardens. Why not try one of the island’s three golf courses or chill out at Scalpsie Bay and watch the seals, with stunning views across to Arran?
