  • "The cottage was spacious and airy, while still feeling cosy."

We had everything we needed, and spent a lot of time just wandering the Mount Stuart grounds, which are beautiful. It was a perfect place for our 6 year old daughter and our dog to explore. An amazing stay, thank you!

  • "The location of Kennels was superb - the Mount Stuart estate was a revelation and the ability to explore was unlimited, both on foot and by bicycle."

The cottage was warm and comfortable with abundant hot water and an issue with the heated towel rails was dealt with immediately, for which we were very grateful. We particularly liked the high quality of the furnishings, towels and bed linen. We loved the relaxed informality of the place, including the overgrown drive and outside area, and felt really at home. The only improvement would be some basic cleaning materials for the bathrooms as when you are there for a few days or more the bath, basin, lavatory etc. need a little TLC! Our thanks to everyone involved with the letting of the cottage.

  • "The Mount Staurt estate where the kennels is situated is the most stunning location."

The use of the 300 acre grounds which stretch down to the coast and a small beach was fabulous for walking both ourselves and our two dogs and a complimentary tour of the house a big bonus. As for the kennels which was warm, well equipped ( other feedback mentioned a small fridge, well they now have an undercounter fridge and freezer plenty of room) cosy and clean. The large side garden was safe for our two larger dogs as both gates could be closed. They enjoyed pottering and lying about after their lovely walks. The island is small and has some lovely beaches and Rothsay has some interesting buildings and all the amenities needed to keep us fed and watered. We came home feeling relaxed and recharged just what we went for.

  • "The Kennels is an amazing property and we have visited on several occasions."

The grounds of Mount Stuart offer some fantastic walks and the property itself is idyllic. However, there are some minor issues with the property that need addressing. The fridge is OK if you are a Borrower or a contortionist. It's very small and difficult to access and there is plenty of room to have a proper fridge freezer. Despite the property being super clean, there are some wear and tear marks that need addressing, particularly in the bathrooms where there are multiple water marks. The flush on the toilets are awful and this has been mentioned by other guests but not addressed.

  • "We have stayed in this property a few years ago."

It is in need of redecoarting fairly soon. There was a dearth of cleaning materials and equipment - not even something to clean the bathroom. A pity as it is a nice house in a great location.

  • "Cottage met all our needs."

Nice touch with small welcome basket containing local produce. Lots of safe walks from the cottage with the Estates 300 acres, both shoreline and woods. Very quiet and peaceful location.

  • "The location and size of the cottage actually exceeded our expectations."

The location was spectacular being in the grounds of Mount Stuart with open views over the surrounding countryside and we were even given a free tour of the house. The housekeeping staff were friendly and obviously took pride in their work. The cleanliness was exceptional. My husband is disabled with MS and is unable to use stairs or a bath so it all worked well for us - perhaps a grab rail in the shower would have helped My only complaint - and a very minor one - was that the fridge was too small as it was 5 miles away from Rothesay and shops. Great holiday!

  • "Quiet private location."

Accepts dogs. Beautifully renovated to a really high standard. Access to beautiful parkland and woodland of Mount Stuart Estate - so excellent for walking the dog. Have stayed here as a group of up to 4 people. Six would mean using the bed settee. Would have to take the open plan nature of the living space,(living room with the bed settee, dining area and kitchen) into account before considering this. We have been to this cottage 3 times now and will be going back!!

  • "The cottage is everything you could ask for as a holiday home and much more."

Set in the grounds of Mount Stuart, you have full ability to walk the extensive grounds to the shore and through the surrounding woodland - we saw seals and many sea birds at the shore and deer and hares in the woodland. The cottage is fully equiped with everything you might need for your holiday; a welcome pack on arrival is an added bonus; the underfloor heating and double facing woodburning stove are superb - you are provided with plenty of wood and othernecessities for the fire. Overall the isle of Bute is one of the most peaceful places I have been to and the cottage only enhanced that experience.

About the location

ROTHESAY, ISLE OF BUTE

Port Bannatyne 2.2 miles; Kilchattan Bay 7 miles

Although its castle dates from the 13th Century, the seaside town of Rothesay became very popular as a tourist destination in the Victorian era when many Glaswegians would go ‘doon the watter’ (down the River Clyde) and across on the ferry to Bute. Today there is much to do and see on this beautiful island which is very accessible by ferry crossing, either the 35 minute trip from Wemyss Bay or else the shorter 5 minute crossing to the north of the island from Colintraive. Visit the castle ruins in the centre of town, enjoy the stunning scenery with coastal walks or on one of the cycle routes around the island and visit historic Mount Stuart House as well as its superb gardens. Why not try one of the island’s three golf courses or chill out at Scalpsie Bay and watch the seals, with stunning views across to Arran?
