About the location

STEWARTON

Glasgow 21 miles; Kilmarnock 4.8 miles; Irvine 10 miles

Stewarton is a large town situated in East Ayrshire. It lies at a crossing point of the Annick Water, six miles north of Kilmarnock and within commuting distance of Glasgow and Irvine. Stewarton is known as the 'Bonnet Toun' and as early as the 1400s it was engaged in the production of this traditional Scottish headwear. The association with bonnet making was resurrected in 1932 when the long defunct Stewarton Bonnet Guild, first established in 1590, was re-established. Its main role these days is to organise the Festival Week that takes place in June each year. Elements of Stewarton's earlier industrial heritage still remains and the town continues to convey a sense of the bustle of times gone by. Stewarton boasts local shops, sports centre, restaurants and pubs including The Smugglers Inn with its busy bar and pleasant service. With the train station conveniently positioned in the centre of town there is easy access to many attractions. Head to Eglinton Country Park where there's always something different to see including the castle ruins and tournament grounds. Kilmarnock is a short distance away and has much to offer such as; Burns Mounment Centre, Dick Institute, Laigh Kirk and the Kilmarnock War Memorial. Stewarton serves as a dormitory for Glasgow, Kilmarnock and Irvine, a delightful location for a memorable getaway.
