Biblical rain had closed many roads in the highlands and the road to Kilchoan was one of them, luckily a few hours after our arrival. We were greeted by one of the best views in Scotland, looking out over to Rhum, Muck, Eigg, Canna and Skye. This was the ever changing backdrop to our stay (who needs tv or tablet?) Dondies was warm and cosy and on the evenings, when the temperature dropped off, the wood burner came into its own. During our two weeks stay we found that the cottage lacked for nothing, the bed was very comfy and slept soundly after all our exertions of the day. At low tide we loved nothing more than walking our dog on the deserted beaches and there are numerous to find. If you like peace and tranquility and are good at planning ahead then Dondies will be right up your street. Even the pine marten paid us a visit (caught him on our camera trap). Thank you to the owner and your staff who make this place available. Reviewed by Stephen5.0★Sep 2023 "We had a brilliant time!" The cottage was very comfortable and had all the facilities you need. The view from the cottage were simply stunning! Very quiet location, nice beaches. Would recommend that you bring all your food supplies as there are no shops close to the cottage, However you are close to the ferry for Mull , which was brilliant for shopping and restaurants. The best part of this holiday was the view from the cottage which was stunning !! Reviewed by Angela5.0★Sep 2023 "Comfortable house with fabulous view in a beautiful location." It was good to meet the owner who is a great character very friendly and helpful, he filled us in on the history of the building and surrounding area, we absolutely recommend a holiday here we had a most pleasurable stay. Reviewed by James5.0★Apr 2023 "A beautiful modern little cottage views great views over sanna beach." This place has had a full revamp so the pictures you are looking at are old ones. The new scheme is neutral with some grey with a log burner is the cosy living room. You can't beat the views over to the beach and the island beyond especially when the sun is out. It is listed as having a dryer but there isn't one. Be prepared for a long drive from the ferry approx 1 hour 30 on singletrack roads which are well maintained but are very up and down and windy. The place is ideal for a weeks getaway with your partner and 1 dog. There are a few walks near by which are challenging but worth the views up the mountains. There is only 1 pub in the village approx 10 minutes drive from the cottage which is only open on Friday's during the winter months but is worth a visit just for the food and the friendly locals. All in all a beautiful and cosy cottage for a peaceful getaway from city life and would definitely consider coming back. Reviewed by Stephen4.1★Feb 2023 "We had a lovely stay at Dondie’s, cottage was very modern, comfortable and clean, views from cottage spectacular although location is quite isolated which adds to the charm." Met Donald the owner who was welcoming, friendly and down to earth. Just a note, if walking from cottage to Sanna beach in the winter go via the Old Schoolhouse route as it is not very easy going via the coast route. Reviewed by P5.0★Nov 2022 "Dondies is a very fine cottage, with an outstanding view of the bays of Portuairk and Sanna, and a great vista over to Eigg, Muck and Rhum." The inside has been modernised to a high standard and it is a very comfortable place to inhabit. Everything was in good working order and the place was clean and just as described. Portuairk is one of those places that invites you to enjoy the immediate area, it's not somewhere that lends itself to travelling far inland, so it's great to have a comfortable cottage where it's just great to enjoy the spectacular view! Reviewed by Ted5.0★Oct 2022 "Everything was perfect." The croft was clean, fresh and newly decorated. A great size for a couple plus large dog. It was equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. I would have found a mirror in the bedroom useful, but this is a small personal preference, not essential. I was a little worried that there would not be enough to fill our time in such a remote location, but after 2 weeks I was very sad to leave. It was so peaceful and relaxing, with wonderful views and wildlife surrounding us. To sit on the patio watching the islands disappear and reappear from the mist was magical. When the sun came out the sea and sky turned to a beautiful blue and turquoise against the silver sand. We saw eagles, red deer and seals, and the highlight of each evening was a visit from the pine marten. A ferry trip across to Tobermory was very pleasant and easy to do, providing some shops and restaurants if needed. We loved the 6 mile round walk to the lighthouse and tea room at Ardnamurchan Point, and walks to Sanna bay. Each giving stunning views. We treated ourselves to lunch at Mingary Castle which was a wonderful experience. Reviewed by Denise5.0★Jul 2022 "We loved our holiday in Dondie's." The cottage is newly refurbished and is warm and comfortable, with everything we needed. The view is probably the most beautiful we have ever had in our many visits to the Scottish highlands. Donald, the owner, came to welcome us at the start of our visit and gave us helpful information. A perfect place for a quiet holiday. Reviewed by Lynda4.7★Apr 2022 "The property location is superb and the recent refurbishment brilliant." Not sure what you mean by listings but the description and photos of the property does not match the refurbished property. That was OK for us but not so good for the owners! Whilst understanding about Covid restrictions we felt the minimal amount of equipment was a little too minimal!! Brilliant weather but brilliant whatever the weather. Reviewed by Eunice3.8★Mar 2022 "Cottage had fantastic views." Parking was good, but track to cottage is unpaved and slightly potholed. It was ok in a Tesla Model 3 though (that has a low ground clearance). Speaking of electric cars I was also able to charge up my car using my own extension cable run through the window into a kitchen socket. We left some money to cover the extra electricity costs. Bed was comfortable and supportive (I do have a bad back so this was very welcome). House was warm, kitchen had good storage space (cupboard, fridge and freezer). Kitchen utensils & crockery were sufficient for our needs, but some kitchen scales would have been handy! We also had a complimentary Prosecco and biscuits which were well received! However provision of basic consumable materials (toilet roll, bin liners, foil, salt, extra logs, firelighters) was very thin. There was therefore a need to go shopping for such things. We’ve found other cottages normally have these things provided in sufficient quantity so this was coming up a little short. We have had the most amazing time at this cottage with views to die for. The cottage had everything you could ask for to make the stay comfortable. Dondie even took the trouble to ring us before our arrival to advise us that the local shop would be closed over the Christmas period. If you are looking for a peaceful getaway to recharge your batteries I would highly recommend this cottage. It is one of the best we have stayed in. It was as though there was no wadding in place’s between the springs and the outer fabric and you could see outline of springs. Only 3 hangers in wardrobe.
