there is a good bit of shelter from rain & wind & a gate so my dog could mess around on the veranda , lovely area for driving around & good pub food also dog friendly especialy the harbour inn at garlieston, good comfortable lodge.

  • "Got exactly what we all needed."

A nice break away from our working lives and being able to relax in an extremely comfortable and beautiful lodge. More than enough space for my wife and I as well as our 16 year old son and 12 year old daughter and black Labrador. Picturesque towns a short drive away with all essentials catered for. Would highly recommend this property and Scotland in general, a beautiful place to recharge your batteries.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. The lodge was left in an immaculate condition, which was very much appreciated. You are welcome back anytime to this peaceful part of Scotland. Best wishes Catherine Murdoch. Property Owner

  • "Nice place, very well equipped, a little tired in places."

Even with the blinds down and cutains drawn in the bedroom it was still very bright at sunrise. As specified its a quiet site which I'd looked for, but found this a bit too isolated. A shop within walking distance would have been nice. All in all it was a comfortable base to visit other places.

Thanks for your comments. There are shops in Whithorn, which is a 5 minute car drive away. Glad you had enjoyable stay. Property Owner

  • "The location is lovely."

Unfortunately our hearts sank when we saw the caravan next door's motorhome parked a foot away from the side lounge window of the lodge. There was a really nice view from the decking of the fields to the left, but obliterated by the motorhome. The decking of the lodge was covered in dog hair and bird droppings, and a broken pot by the French doors also covered in bird droppings. The lodge has obviously been lovely at one time, but has an air of neglect about it, frayed curtains, dirty blinds and window ledges, fluff and dust behind the bathroom door, the oven and toaster were filthy, the kitchen cupboards dirty, especially the one under the sink. Utensil rack on the wall ingrained with grease. Dog hairs stuck to the valance on the double bed. No bedside lamp. Personal items, presumably the owner's, in cupboards and drawers, even shoes and socks in one of the bedroom drawers. Despite the property being advertised as having central heating the handbook stated that there is a fire in the lounge and a portable heater, and not to touch the controls of the boiler. All in all a total disappointment, made worse by the lack of attention to cleanliness.

Very suprised to read your review. You did not contact Sykes or myself during your stay to investigate/discuss your issues ,and remedy any problem. 1. The lodge does have central heating. It is timed to come on at 8am and 8pm,even though it is summer. There is also additional heating in the form of a fire in the living room and a portable oil radiator. 2.We are in a rural area and the swallows nest in our eves. Most guests enjoy the presence of these beautiful birds and the deck area is cleaned with every changeover. 3.The deck has a lovely view even with a car parked. There are 6 windows other than the side window overlooking the deck and view. 4. Although our lodge is pet friendly we have had consistently high scores for our cleanliness. You seem to be the anomaly here. 5. Totally disagree with your issue regarding toaster and oven as I personally cleaned the lodge after your stay and both were clean. 6.Mr and Mrs Marshall who stayed after you ,were so impressed by our (lovely lodge) and I quote, that they left a thank you card. 7 . The only personal item we leave in the lodge is the guitar for the use and pleasure of our guests. The shoes in the cupboard were from previous guests and we are awaiting instructions on how to return them. A very perturbed Catherine Murdoch. Property Owner

  • "Excellent location for peace and quiet and exploring the surrounding ding area."

Lodge was better than expected and had everything we needed, except a measuring hug! The pictures don’t do it justice, very clean and tidy. Park is small and no entertainment that we could see, so definitively not for young kids.

Thanks for your lovely review. I will check in regards to measuring jug . It is a very peaceful site. Glad you enjoyed your holiday. Best wishes Catherine Murdoch Property Owner

  • "Lovely lodge on a small site."

We had a great week of peace and relaxation, just what was needed after a horrible year. Beds and settee really comfy and the lodge itself has everything you need. The dark starry sky was fabulous, I’ve never seen so many stars - I wish I’d had a telescope!

So glad you had a lovely stay. Whithorn is a dark sky zone, so you have a fabulous view of the stars. Thanks for your positive feedback. Property Owner

  • "What a find we found in Roe Deer Lodge, from swallows nesting at the side of the lodge to the peaceful setting around, what was there not to like."

The owners had tastefully decorated the lodge with all the home comforts you would need. The surprise was the large shower unit - delightfully big for the size of the lodge. We had only booked for 4 nights but will be back again - it's an ideal location to explore and we did, although I would warn other avid readers on this as I succumbed to buying 10 books in my venture into Wigtown! Thank you too for the welcome pack - the snowballs were delicious!

Thank you so much for your lovely review, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Hopefully the swallows will be back next year, they are gorgeous birds. Thanks for leaving the lodge so clean and tidy. You are all welcome back anytime. Property Owner

Can highly recommend the lodge. We have a little dog and the large decked area was perfect for her and there was a good dog walking area close by. Good sized main bedroom and 2 single rooms one a good size the other small but perfectly usable. Comfy couches in the lounge area and a good shower room.

So glad you enjoyed your stay and your little dog had a lovely holiday too. Thanks for the positive review. You are welcome back anytime. Property Owner

About the location

WHITHORN

Castlewigg 2 miles; Wigtown 10.5 miles; Newton Stewart 17 miles.

The former Royal Burgh of Whithorn on the Machars Peninsula in Dumfries and Galloway is renowned for having the first recorded Christian church is Scotland. Built by St Ninian around 397, the site of the Candida Casa, or White/Shining House, is now home to the parish church. The area of Whithorn is rich in history and is also home to a medieval priory and an archaeological site. The distinctive shape of Whithorn, with its spacious central area and narrow entrance-ways of elegant Georgian houses, displays its medieval heritage. The Machars and Rhins of Galloway are also home to spectacular gardens, a result of the Gulf Stream and mild climate. Logan Botanic Gardens, the Aldouran Wetland and the spectacular gardens of Castle Kennedy are all a must see. To the north of the Machars are the Galloway Hills, offering walking to all levels as well as world class mountain biking. Golf, fishing and wildlife spotting are well catered for and the sandy beaches of Monrieth, Garlieston, and along the whole of Luce Bay will delight any visitor.
