  • "We loved Marl House."

Comfortable, clean and very cosy. Equipped with everything you could ever need. We enjoyed the walks to the beach and all the space in the garden. There were 14 of us staying for the week aged between 6 months and 86! The perfect family getaway. Location rural but still managed a grocery delivery. Would not hesitate to recommend.

  • "This was our second group booking at Marl House, and we have already booked to return in December with another group."

It's a fantastic house with an excellent layout of rooms for 12+ people. The beds are comfortable, clean and it's a beautiful and scenic area. Although the wifi didn't work on arrival due to recent high winds, Christopher did everything to ensure we had access to the internet, and got things fixed quickly. The kitchen is very well equipped, and we're learning how to cook on an AGA! Very friendly hosts and would definitely recommend.

  • "Finding a holiday property that could accommodate our expanding family had proven difficult until I spotted Marl House."

The price was refreshing sensible and the amount of space inside and out was wonderful. The garden was as huge as it appears in the photos, then we found 3 further large lawns off to one side. We could have had football, cricket, croquet and badminton taking place in each lawned area at the same time! The house itself had large bedrooms, plenty of bathrooms, dining rooms, games and table tennis rooms as well as a sitting room. Lots of areas to quietly read a book or chat. The kitchen was huge with a massive utility room attached. In total there were 3 large fridge freezers, two washing machines and two tumble dryers, all of which were well used. We cooked and shared meals together each day and baked biscuits and a cheesecake. All the equipment you needed was in the kitchen and generously supplied. There was no local food delivery to the house from supermarkets and the nearest shops were small. We had brought first meals and staples with us and shopped at Newton Stewart on the journey to the house for fresh produce. We also had 2 successful Amazon deliveries to the house during the week. On Wednesday tea time the mobile fish and chip van visits Garlieston, 10 minutes up the coast. The bay there is sheltered and shallow, you can walk out quite far and the water is still knee deep, the children spent hours in the sea and played on the beach. Other highlights were feeding the red deer in Galloway National Park and visiting the Otter Pools on the Ranger road, also travelling to the most southern point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway and going up the lighthouse. The adults also enjoyed the whisky distillery tour and the gin tasting.

  • "Located in stunning surroundings with an amazing and expensive garden, which was great for playing a game of rounders!"

Marl House feels incredibly grand and is beautifully decorated, with plenty of room for our party of 15. We would highly recommend waking to the beach, which is only a short distance away.

  • "A beautiful, extremely well-equipped property with wonderful views and extensive gardens - perfect for our children."

So much space for our extended family to spread out and relax in a truly stunning and peaceful location. Children's toys and books were much appreciated and the table tennis. The owners were so friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed the tracks from the house along the coastline and surrounding countryside -fantastic for running, walking or cycling with stunning sea views. The only slight issue at the property was that the wi-fi didn't really work and phone signal was very patchy. However, a few minutes drive to Isle of Whithorn community cafe provided excellent food and wi-fi! We so enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend to other large groups. We hope to return another year! Many thanks.

  • "Generally, very good, and everybody loved their stay."

I was concerned beforehand that the carpets and furnishings might be too nice, and we would be shouting at the kids in case they spilt things. But there were tiled floors with appropriate rugs, so that was perfect. The kitchen had an older table where the kids ate, and the adults had a separate dining room - excellent. There was plenty room for the kids indoors, and the huge garden was brilliant. There was a lack of showers though. En-suites had a bath with a shower attachment - fine for bathing kiddies but no good for an adult wanting a shower. And no shower curtain either. Plenty of good quality towels - excellent. Warm kitchen from the range - excellent. The table tennis room was very welcome on the rainy days.

  • "This is a fantastic holiday home perfect for large /extended family and friend gatherings."

The quiet rural location offers a calm and laidback friendly backdrop with lovely places to visit within easy driving reach such as Whithorn, Wigtown, Monreith, Port William and Rigg Beach. The beaches were beautiful, ideal for short stop offs for a sandy wander and a quick swim. The bookshop experience in Wigtown alone kept our 11 year olds through to the grandparents very happy and we left there on more than one occasion with a bundle of books and an ice cream in our hands. The homeowner Christopher popped in on our arrival day to check all was okay, and was kind enough to pop a forgotten laptop in the post after our departure. Holiday home and wonderful Dumfries and Galloway region highly recommended and on our list for a return visit.

  • "Marl house is a truly beautiful place."

The pictures don't really do its size justice and the surrounding area is stunning. This is a real home- not perfect; it is lived in and this just adds to the experience. The house is well considered, has everything you may need and feels like a really authentic and loved space. We used it for a Songwriting retreat for 17 people and we had more than enough room. Emily was a fantastic, welcoming host. We will definitely be back to Marl House.

Lovely friendly host and grateful for all the logs. The games room is a bit cluttered eg with old mattresses. It would be great to have a smart TV, especially for wet weather.

  • "We had a wonderful time at Marl House."

There were welcome gifts on arrival (which was a nice surprise) in the wonderfully equipped kitchen. The house is lovely and spacious. There were 12 of us and we were often all in the kitchen at once helping to cook on the Aga which was great. All the bedrooms are very comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed playing table tennis and, on the warmer days, croquet on the huge lawn. It was great walking down to the beach everyday and in the evenings seeing the deer in the adjacent field. We would highly recommend a stay at Marl House and would love to go back again one day.

  • "Marl house is an amazing place."

We loved it!! The whole property is very spacious, light and airy. Not a whiff of damp and lovely and cosy from the AGA - which we loved cooking on! The kitchen was amazing three dishwashers, two washing machines, two tumble dryers, all the gadgets you could want, and lots of crockery, glasses and cups - it was a chef's dream! The furnishings and bed linen were a fantastic quality - loved the curtains too! The garden was huge, the adjoining lane quiet and the overall location peaceful. The beach was deserted!!! It's five-star accommodation which raises the bar for lots of other property owners in the area. If only everywhere could be like this! I just wished we lived closer so we could stay more often.

  • "What a brilliant property, it far exceeded our expectations we lived like the lord off the manor."

If you book the property follow the directions to the letter as you can go past the entrance. If you do don’t worry just go down the next right and go round the square. There are plenty of things to do at the property the only thing we had cause of concern is the AGA cooker being permanently on, with a 2 year old in our party we had to watch cause the aga is warm. There are plenty of birds flying about and personally I would have Inked a bird table, to feed them but that is a small gripe. Thank you

The property

A very well presented eight bedroom farmhouse set in attractive and generous grounds in close proximity to the burgh of Whithorn and the Isle of Whithorn.

With the feel of an established country house, this fine property sleeps up to 17 people, making it ideal for large families and close friends.

Tastefully furnished with both comfort and practicality in mind, Marl House is a pleasing 'home away from home' with plenty of room in which guests may spread out and feel immediately comfortable. There are six bedrooms (one en-suite) and two additional bathrooms in the main body of the house.

The two wings have a further bedroom and bathroom each, and there is a large downstairs wet room with shower, basin and wc.

In addition there is a spacious sitting room with wood burning stove, a comfy TV room (which can be converted to a further twin bedroom and is suitable for wheelchair users should it be required) and a large well lit open plan kitchen with extended dining area which is comprehensively stocked crockery, pots, pans and utensils. Leading directly from the kitchen through double doors is a more formal dining room which is light and airy, with large panel windows and outside access.

At the end of one wing there is a games room with table tennis and darts, as well as some outdoor games.

Adjacent is the 'garden wing' with large French doors and chairs and tables which can be used outside.

Far reaching lawns afford guests a real feeling of space and privacy and are as suitable for peaceful strolls as they are for energetic games of football!

The beach is accessible by farm track and is a twenty minute walk from the house.

For some more challenging walking trails and activities, head 20 miles north to the Galloway Hills which provide walking for all levels as well as world class mountain biking.

The property has direct access to 20 kilometers of new cycling/walking track, situated on the farm in a coastal location. Don't miss out on the nearby spacious sands of Monrieth, Garlieston and Luce Bay beaches.

About the location

WHITHORN

Castlewigg 2 miles; Wigtown 10.5 miles; Newton Stewart 17 miles.

The former Royal Burgh of Whithorn on the Machars Peninsula in Dumfries and Galloway is renowned for having the first recorded Christian church is Scotland. Built by St Ninian around 397, the site of the Candida Casa, or White/Shining House, is now home to the parish church. The area of Whithorn is rich in history and is also home to a medieval priory and an archaeological site. The distinctive shape of Whithorn, with its spacious central area and narrow entrance-ways of elegant Georgian houses, displays its medieval heritage. The Machars and Rhins of Galloway are also home to spectacular gardens, a result of the Gulf Stream and mild climate. Logan Botanic Gardens, the Aldouran Wetland and the spectacular gardens of Castle Kennedy are all a must see. To the north of the Machars are the Galloway Hills, offering walking to all levels as well as world class mountain biking. Golf, fishing and wildlife spotting are well catered for and the sandy beaches of Monrieth, Garlieston, and along the whole of Luce Bay will delight any visitor.
