About the location

COLVEND

Dalbeattie 7 miles; Castle Douglas 13 miles.

The village of Colvend is believed to derive its name from John de Culwen, who was the village’s proprietor in the 15th century. Colvend boasts a shop, a mobile Post Office and a season restaurant, as well as a pottery shop nearby. Sandyhills Bay has a seasonal shop and an outside cafe seating area. This area of coastline, known as the Colvend and Southwick shore has many rugged cliffs and secret bays to tempt the visitor, and there are a number of footpaths to be explored. Cyclists have easy access to most of the 7stanes mountain bike complex, and the renowned Galloway Dark Sky Forest Park is a short drive away. The attractive beaches of Rockcliffe and Sandyhills provide an enjoyable family day out, plus the beaches of Mossyard and Sandgreen, which are popular with locals, are within a half hour drive away, and Kippford is a popular yachting and sailing centre. This is a lovely base for exploring Dumfries and Galloway.
