  • "Butlers Gait is a ground floor flat which is very spacious."

The rooms are large and well appointed. The furniture is comfortable and the kitchen is very well equipped including a dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer and a stove and oven. Ideally located with easy access to the main tourist destinations. An exceptionally quiet rural location, perfect for a relaxing holiday.

  • "Butler's Gait is a large comfortable flat, well presented and in a nice location."

The Owner, with whom we spoke on the telephone and via email, is very pleasant. This part of Scotland is full of interest and is ideal for a holiday without the crowds. We have no hesitation in awarding a 5 star rating, with the only caution that people with mobility problems, like us, need to be aware that there are two steps in the wide entrance hallway which we found very difficult to negotiate. We mentioned this to the Owner, who took it on board straight away and will consult with the owners of the other flats with a view to having a handrail installed.

  • "It was a pleasant flat in a great location."

Easy access to some great gardens and other places. Kitchen was well equipped re electrical goods but some of the crockery could do with being replaced. Small kitchen so not a lot of space- think I would get rid of some of the clutter like cookery books and the like to give guests a little more space for groceries. I found the bed very hard and uncomfortable - but that is a personal view . Flat was warm with plenty of hot water and on the whole comfortable. I really didn't like having a shower curtain instead of a screen as a wet shower curtain clinging to you is horrible. But that is a minor issue and the location made up for any shortcomings ( not the bed though!). Owner very thoughtful in providing a card which allowed two for one entries to the gardens. On the whole a pleasant stay and a good base to explore a really lovely part of Scotland.

Butler's Gait was lovely, very clean and a joy to come home to after our days walking around the area. Sue made us very welcome and ensured we had the most glorious of holidays. The bed was a little firm for me but the apartment itself was very comfortable and welcoming. The bath was fantastic and very relaxing after a day of walking the forests and coastal area. The Glenwhan gardens and tea rooms are 5 minutes walk away from the apartment and an absolute treasure - a plantswoman's paradise with a tea room to die for. My wife and I will remember our time at Butler's Gait for many years to come and the vistas and places we saw whilst there will keep us going during many a dark winter. Thank you. From us and Arnie the dog - a dog filled with your kind treats. We hope one day to be able to return.

We had spent New Year’s Eve in Butler’s Gait and our only regret was that it wasn’t for longer. We were travelling back from Northern Ireland via the ferry and we decided to book this fairly last minute. It was perfect! We explored a little of the area and then spent the evening cuddled up with the wood burner on with our doggy. When we arrived, we were greeted on arrival with a New Year’s Eve hamper - including dog treats for our baby - it made the stay even more special. It was a very comfortable stay (with everything provided) and a beautiful building. We explored some of the area (down to the lighthouse and some beaches) and enjoyed a lovely winter’s walk. We’ll definitely come back because we didn’t get to see anywhere as nearly as much as we’d like to. Plus, Sue was very accommodating and happy to get in touch. Again, this is something that is very much appreciated. Thank you for such a lovely stay.

  • "We had a wonderful time at Butler's Gait."

The location was perfect to reach the various villages and beaches so we could go for an afternoon of swimming and visit historic sites. The touches in this apartment were absolutely fabulous from the cool bag and picnic blanket to the coffee maker and all the stuff in the kitchen and our arrival bottle of wne, biscuits, fudge and dog treats! It was so well equipped and we were able to make use of it all (even the torch on the coat pegs- what a great idea!) Our only gripe, which is why we have a sad face on comfort, was the sofas were incredibly uncomfortable and after a long day out; watching a movie and relaxing in an evening wasn't easy to do. The bed, for us was also rock hard and we searched around for extra toppers to find there weren't any. We fed this back to Sue the owner and she was mortified (bless her!) it turned out, the cleaner had forgotten to put the toppers on! She said had we have notified her she would have rectifed straight away. We said we would definitely come back as it was such a welcome break and a lovely apartment too. I just feel bad for marking comfort down, but i wanted to be honest :)

  • "The apartment has everything we need for a lovely, relaxing stay."

There were lots of thoughtful little things, like flannels and bathroom products, DVDs and games and even a note pad for shopping lists, which made us feel really welcome. The wine, treats (for us and our dog) and milk waiting for us were a lovely gesture we really appreciated. The apartment is decorated to a very high standard and feels really opulent. The location is a drive from any shop but this makes it peaceful and, while the gardens are really nice, we enjoyed walking along the adjacent forestry track with our dog. Glenwhan Gardens is within walking distance but we didn't get round to it as we were visiting some of the many beaches in Galloway along with Port William, Kirkcudbright and Stranraer itself. The Covid safe measures in place at the apartment made us feel relaxed; from the hand gel outside the door, inside the door and another bottle on the hall table to the measures taken to safely remove all the towels, oven gloves and bedding (including the quilt and mattress topper). The owners have really gone above and beyond and were politely in contact to make sure we were OK. Obviously we will recommend Butler's Gait to our friends and family and look forward to booking again.

Our heating is set to 19.5 degrees Celsius and is on all day and evening, going off at 11:00pm. We did provide more logs than usual as we usually offer a starter pack of logs and knew there would be a couple of days where the local garage may have been closed. About the location

STRANRAER

Lochans 3 miles; Portpatrick 8 miles; Newton Stewart 25 miles.

Stranraer, which became a Burgh of Barony in 1596 and a Royal Burgh in 1617, lies on the shores of Loch Ryan on the northern side of the isthmus joining the Rhins of Galloway to the mainland. There are many shops and cafes to while away an hour or two and the Stranraer Town Trail explains some of the fascinating history. For walkers, the Southern Upland Way touches Stranraer on its way through the Galloway Hills, having begun in Portpatrick, 7 miles to the west. Three nearby gardens are open to the public and well worth a visit at Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan and Logan. Stranraer has several beaches, however it is worth travelling to Sandhead and New England Bay for wonderful sandy beaches. A short drive south and you come to the Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s southernmost point. The lighthouse on the headland looks over some of the last remaining sections of natural coastal habitat on the Galloway coast and an RSPB nature reserve has been set up to retain this spectacular and diverse area.
