  • "We really enjoyed our stay."

Cottage is in a beautiful location. Very quiet but only short walk into the village. Cottage was very clean and comfortable and easy and relaxing to live in. Kitchen was good for cooking. Beautiful views across the fields. We would stay here again.

Thank you so much for this feedback. We have had quite a lot of people feedback that it is one of the best equipped holiday cottages that they have ever stayed at. Our aim is to make it home from home. We would love to welcome you back. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful Cottage, everything you require, but the ongoing issues that were reported after every visit were never fixed."

The dripping tap in kitchen. The Fridge doesn’t work, didn’t even keep the milk cool, we had to dispose of food because the fridge didn’t work. The overgrown weeds surrounding the garden and the grass didn’t look like it had been cut in months. We found a notice in the conservatory to keep WiFi extender on, but this plug was burned out. This cottage is in need of some TLC.

Thanks for your feedback. We can only respond to issues if people report them. We always provide our telephone number so issues can be reported immediately. Living 200 miles away, writing things in the guest book doesn't always get our immediate attention. A brand new fridge freezer was ordered immediately off the back of your comments. Unfortunately we found out that our gardener had been charging us for his weekly services but had actually not been to the property for several weeks. A new gardener is now in place and the gardening issue has been resolved. A new timer plug and heater has been installed in the conservatory. Its a shame that you happened on the property with this perfect storm of issues but once identified they were all put right with immediate effect as we pride ourselves in running an excellent get away. Some architectural quirks (one bedroom leads off another, kitchen split between two rooms) but still very comfortable and spacious. Owners were very communicative and helpful. We had a great time!

Many thanks for your positive feedback. We are so pleased that you had a great time. There are some quirks. The property is a 200 year old stone built property with oodles of character. The history is that it was originally 2 small cottages that at some point were merged into one. My father lived in the property for 25 years and it is a much loved part of the family which we intend to develop further over time. Watch this space! Property Owner

  • "A lovely cottage with plenty of room and a well equipped kitchen."

An enclosed garden that was a little overgrown but this sort of added a certain ambiance! Plenty of great walks in the area. The girls particularly enjoyed the Highland Cows experience at Kitchen Coos and ewes a short drive towards Stranraer. Had an issue with fridge playing up but these things happen. We informed owner who was doing his best to sort it as quickly as possible. All in all a lovely experience.

Thank you for your positive feedback. We have a gardener once a month but I think things have grown so rapidly this year simply due to the amount of water we've had. Sorry that you had fridge problem. We really don't want anything to go wrong whilst people are staying and I really appreciate the help you provided in helping to sort this out. We're really pleased that you enjoyed the experience. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful remote location if you want to unwind."

However the cottage is very dated and in need of some modernisation and a deep clean. When we arrived there was no key in the safe as promised so after driving over 200 miles we had to phone the owner and wait for the cleaner to bring the keys. After sitting on the drive for an hour we eventually had access to the property which was cold as the heating had been switched off found several unacceptable issues including dirty bedding ( paw prints and dog hairs on pillows and bedding). Dog poo on the garden, overturned garden furniture, mucky streaks on patio doors, cobwebs hanging in lounge, sofa spring broke, black mould on shower curtain and in cupboards, drawers in wardrobe that could not be opened and conservatory furniture in desperate need of a deep clean. It would appear issues have been raised or logged by previous guests but not acted upon. First time we have ever been disappointed with a Sykes cottage holiday.

We are obviously very disappointed by your feedback. However, we try to take all feedback and make sure that we act upon it positively. I would respectfully respond as follows. Firstly, I would point out that the cottage is a 200 year-old property in the middle of the countryside and is rented out consistently as a dog friendly property to dog owners. We allow 3 dogs but have allowed more on occasion in order to cater for our dog loving clientele. Regarding the key issue, I can only apologise but in the years since renting the property this is the first time this has happened and was a genuine oversight by the cleaners. We will be installing a second backup safe that always has keys to guard against this in the future. Regarding the heating, the heating is programmed to come on 3 times a day for 1.5 hours each time. This keeps the property aired. Guests are free to use the heating freely as they please once in. If we kept the property heated constantly, since it is oil fired, the cost of renting the property would be prohibitively high. Our cleaning company spends 2 hours cleaning the property between each changeover during which time all bedding is changed and the property is generally cleaned. Every 6 months the property is subject to a deep clean. Obviously, it is not possible to deep clean after each guest as this would be prohibitively long and prohibitively expensive. As a result, we accept that the odd issue may sneak through the cleaning net such as the odd dog hair given that we are a dog friendly property and the odd cobweb given we are in the middle of the Scottish countryside and the odd spider does sneak through our defences. The fact that there were paw prints on the bedding was not down to the fact that it was not fresh bedding but is down to the fact the previous guests have allowed dirty dogs to jump on beds and furniture which is disappointing as we do ask guests to ensure dogs remain off beds and furniture. However, as a result of your feedback we have immediately replaced all bedding with new bedding. Regarding dog poo in the garden, we do ask all departing guests to remove dog poo. We do not expect gardeners and cleaners to do this, but we do expect all guests to kindly remove all poo from the property before departure. Regarding overturned furniture, due to the high winds that can be experienced in that part of the world, garden furniture is deliberately laid down so that it can’t be blown around the garden. We assume that any guest wanting to sit on it will stand it up. Regarding streaks on the patio door, we have a window cleaner every 2 weeks and so you must have simply been between his visits. Regarding the shower curtain, a new shower curtain has been deployed and we have implemented a system in which new shower curtains will be provided every 6 months. Regarding drawers in the very expensive Barker & Stonehouse wardrobes, the wood has obviously expanded slightly, and we will solve this with some basic DIY. We accept that the conservatory furniture is due for renewal and replacing this is part of our improvement plans for the property but due to cost and the rent we charge for the property, improvements have to happen in a staged fashion. Although we do accept some of your feedback, which we have acted on immediately, we believe most of it is at odds with the overwhelming positive responses we have received for our beloved family property. The garden was lovely just a word of warning if your dog is a jumper the walls surrounding the garden are not high and one of ours did get over at one point, also the cows in the field next door do like to say hello. All in all we would return we even saw the Northern Lights a first for us. Defo recommend.

Thank you for your wonderful comments. We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay and obviously got the same feelings for Sunnyside as we have. Everything provided for one could possibly need. Lovely location and only a short stroll from the beautiful Isle of Whithorn. Welcome tray very welcome after a long drive ! Outside area esp the patio could do with a bit of TLC. A grass cutting team came whilst we were there but it was just grass cutting and no general garden maintenance, just a minor point, did not detract from the enjoyment of our stay. Would not hesitate to come back again.

Thank you for your positive feedback. Your comments are appreciated. We do have plans to develop a new patio but we have to balance competitive rates against generating enough residual income to fund improvements. The reasonably remote location dictates that gardeners are few and far between and therefore we can't dictate a specific grass cutting day or time. We're in the midst of a big garden improvement project at the moment. We'd love t have you back again and hope that over the years you will see our improvement plans coming to fruition. If I could mention one point, I think the external patio area could do with some TLC, maybe paved more and weeded regularly, but on the whole an excellent stay.

Thank you for your feedback. We do have plans for the patio but need to balance the rate at which we perform maintenance/improvements with the rental price of the cottage. The next improvements will see the garden simplified to make maintenance easier and quicker which should release the gardener to concentrate on other areas. After this our main objective is to completely revamp the bathroom after which we will probably invest in creating a new and fabulous patio area. Over the coming years we intend to invest in our much loved property and so hopefully, if you come again, you will see the changes planned being executed. Hopefully we'll be able to welcome you back at some point in the future. Property Owner

The directions were clear and after a long journey travelling over two days from Southern England this was much appreciated! The whole place was clean and tidy - I hope we left it as we found it. We also appreciated the little welcome pack of basics - the scones especially! We loved the village and the walk to the harbour - we had a meal at the pub one evening with our family who live nearby and sat outside watching the sun go down - lovely! The walk to the headland is beautiful and allowed our dog a bit of "off lead" time. They had seen dolphins out in the bay the previous week so we were very disappointed not to make a sighting and teased them that they had "bigged up" the place too much!! In fact we had a wonderful holiday - the local villages were nice, we visited two botanical gardens on the peninsula. And the weather was perfect too. It was just sad that we had to cut our stay short because of commitments at home. We intend to return to visit my cousin again and would stay in the cottage another time if its available. Thank you

The loo seat was secured with metal fixings purchased in Kirkcudbright, until your repair can be done. Very effective! Unfortunately we did have a little accident with one of the tall glasses falling off the draining board on our last morning. Very sorry about this, it'll teach us to congratulate ourselves too early on successfully completed the week with no damage! The property

Tucked away in the countryside of Dumfries and Galloway on the outskirts of Isle of Whithorn is the inviting, detached cottage of Sunnyside.

Sitting moments away from Isle of Whithorn's peaceful harbour, whilst resting within easy reach of the region's friendly towns, despite its quiet location, Sunnyside is the perfect dwelling for a family of six and their three furry friends.

The property comes with off-road parking, so you can park and unload your luggage with ease, before venturing inside to unwind.

The conservatory greets you as you enter the property, a warm and pleasant spot hosting ample seating for you and your loved ones to settle down on after a day of travels.

Progress through the property to find another space to relax, this one being the toasty sitting room, with a gas fire giving the room an inviting glow, warming your feet as you lounge on the sofas and watch TV.

When you're feeling peckish, make your way to one of two kitchen spaces, this one beholding a great range of appliances, including a dishwasher, fridge/freezer and washing machine; the other space is a well-presented kitchen/diner, where a large range cooker can be used by the budding chef to fix up some mouth-watering dishes.

These dishes can be enjoyed together around the circular dining table, whilst your canine companions rest in their dog beds.

The bathroom hosts a lovely corner bath with shower over, where you can go to enjoy a tranquil soak after a long day.

Once you've freshened up, choose between three thoughtfully laid-out double bedrooms to sleep in.

Take your choice of super king, double or twin beds to suit your sleeping arrangements.

On sunny days, make the most of the enclosed rear garden, a spot that provides a spacious lawn that the kids and dogs can thoroughly enjoy, while you flick through a book or dine alfresco on the patio.

Venture to the quaint village of Isle of Whithorn to find the friendly Steampacket Inn and the St Ninians Tearoom, where you can savour a bite to eat, before embarking on a hike through Isle Head, where panoramic sea views can be admired, or you can wander along the picturesque harbour.

Apart from the attractive scenery and the varied coastline, the Machars Peninsular offers pretty towns such as Port William, still a working harbour, Monreith, which was the home of writer Gavin Maxwell and offers a delightful, sandy beach and Garlieston, home to the beautiful botanical gardens of Galloway House.

Spend some well-deserved time away with your loved ones at Sunnyside, an ideal base for exploring the delights of the Machars.

Already in existence 1600 years ago, the community was at the very beginning of Scotland’s Christian history when Ninian, Scotland’s first missionary and saint, founded his church at Whithorn. The Isle Church itself, a former Free Kirk, stands prominent in defiance of the highest of tides. The Isle harbour, once the host of cargoes of coal, fertiliser and timber is now busy throughout the year with local boats fishing for crabs and lobsters, as well as catches of scallops brought in by the visiting Manx fleet. However, some of the best goes straight in through the doors of the award-winning Steam Packet Inn on the waterfront! Take a walk along the Harbour and enquire about local sea-angling opportunities. At the end of the Harbour, follow the signs for St Ninian’s Chapel and shortly you’ll come to the Witness Cairn. Just a short distance away stands the 14th century ruin of St Ninian’s Chapel, once a place where pilgrims were welcomed and now in the care of Historic Scotland. It’s an easy climb up the Cairn to the distinctive white tower which has been a mariner’s landmark for close on two centuries. At the top you can behold the majestic expanse of the Solway and the Irish Sea. Across the water lie the great peaks of Cumbria’s Lake District, while due south lies the Isle of Man, its nearest point just 18 miles away. The Isle is a welcoming port for visiting leisure sailors and bowlers too. So please bring your boat and your bowls! At the Isle you will discover a tranquil place that is much more than just a view. Welcome to the Isle!
