It was a beautifully appointed cottage in a lovely quiet village. The welcome gifts were such a lovely touch and very much appreciated. We enjoyed drinks and food at the local pub, woodland walks from the front door and exploring the WW2 relics along the shore of Loch Ryan. Nearby Port Patrick and the Mull of Galloway lighthouse were also favourites.

  • "What a fantastic and amazing cottage for our family to have the opportunity to stay in!"

Squirrel cottage is of a very high standard indeed and is really beautifully designed and is absolutely immaculate in its presentation. This cottage is quite spacious and has been superbly renovated, with a great deal of care and attention to detail. It is very well maintained and is presented in a unique and a very cool and contemporary modern style, with contemporary art works at the centrepiece of the lounge, which are a talking point and show an environmental awareness and consciousness of the value of nature. The water supply and heating at the cottage are via a heat pump and so this property has been really beautifully renovated in keeping with changing times and environmental challenges. The cottage is on the main high street of Kirkcolm village, but the focus of the lovely contemporary lounge area of the cottage is that instead of the sofas looking out and facing onto the main high street, the furniture is arranged so that you look out from a large picture window onto the natural outdoor space at the back of the cottage and a stunningly designed wooden decked area that is suspended above a small area of woodland and has a table and chairs for meals and outdoor relaxation, with the peaceful sound of a countryside stream nearby, making the garden area at the cottage a really great place to observe nature and for reading and relaxation!! The dining area of the lounge also looks out onto this lovely view and so also has the decked garden area and woodland as a backdrop. The decor, furnishings and fixtures in the cottage were of a very high quality and had the wow factor! The bedrooms were very comfortable and beautifully styled with crisp white bedding and stylish bedside tables and décor! The kitchen at Squirrel cottage is really stunning, too, and is very light and spacious and has been superbly designed in a contemporary country style with a large central workspace and breakfast bar. A warm welcome was provided there with some lovely homemade bread and chutney and a selection of cheese and basic supplies of milk and butter. Squirrel cottage is above outstanding in terms of quality, design and comfort and is an absolutely superb cottage for a holiday in this area of the Rhins of Galloway and we would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to holiday in this area! This cottage particularly benefits from being located in Kirkcolm village, which was an ideal base for our holiday and is a really lovely, quiet and peaceful, very friendly and community-minded village not far from Loch Ryan and all the shops and amenities in Stranraer. Kirkcolm has a unique and really interesting history connected with the RAF during wartime and the remains of the base for the flying boats is still visible on the edge of Loch Ryan at Wig bay in Kirlcolm and was a particularly fascinating place for my husband to visit as he is a history teacher with a keen interest in this era of history. Some really nice walking trails can also be found around Kirkcolm along the edge of Loch Ryan, which we enjoyed using of an evening and loved looking out to Ailsa Craig and along this wonderful natural coastal harbour and enjoyed watching the ferries travelling to and from Ireland. Squirrel cottage is ideally placed for exploring the whole of the Rhins of Galloway and in particular the wonderful coastal and cliff scenery at the Corsewall lighthouse, the Killantringan lighthouse and beautiful bay and beach at Knock bay, with its high cliffs, wide expanse of sand and stunning waterfall above the beach. On the other side of the Killantringan lighthouse is the smaller but really beautiful, rugged cove and beach at Portamaggie, which is quite wonderful, too. The lovely harbour town of Portpatrick is a short drive from the cottage and has wonderful cliff scenery and the historic and stunningly located Dunskey castle perched high above the cliffs there. The lovely smaller coves and beaches at Port Mora and Port Kale are either accessible from the cliffs at Portpatrick or from a wonderful peaceful woodland walk through the Dunskey Estate. Another amazing stretch of beach and cliffs not far from this property can be found at Larbrax bay, where there is another view of the Killantringan lighthouse and views of the Irish coast in the distance about twenty miles away. Further afield from the cottage, we drove along the magnificent Ayrshire coastal road through the scenic high hills of Glen App and the coastal town of Ballantrae to Croy shore and Culzean castle, which is stunningly located on high cliffs and a rocky outcrop above Croy shore, which has a really lovely view of the Isle of Arran. From here it was not far to the lovely old harbour and the historic and scenic castle at Dunure. All amazing and unforgettable places within easy reach of Squirrel cottage and Kirkcolm!

The attention to detail on every aspect by the owners has created a home straight out of the WOW factor handbook. All mod cons including state of the art air source heat pump heating system, coupled with a wood burning stove in the lounge for evening ambience. We won’t spoil things by detailing the contents of the welcome pack but can say it’s simply the best that we have had either in the UK or overseas. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner and her young son who took time out from their lambing preparations to call in to say hello.
