  • "A beautiful clean presented cottage."

Handy for everything - shops, pubs, and had a huge variety of places to eat and drink. A short walk takes you to the Coachman bar which was great for bar snacks and very reasonable priced alcohol - very friendly owners and locals. The cottage itself was well equipped - a small freezer compartment would have been handy, but other than that, there was nothing to fault in this great wee cottage. We hope to return as there is tremendous potential for walking in the area. Thanks to the owner for letting out this beautiful find.

  • "We loved the cottage and staying in Moffat."

It's worth emphasising how close to the Town Centre this property is, and also that parking is not a problem at all. Our dogs loved the holiday too; good parks and walks around the Town, and bigger walks at the Grey Mare's Tail, St. Mary's Loch and Wanlockhead. Only downside - no reflection on either Sykes or owners - was that some of the places we would have liked to visit were either not, or not fully, open due to Covid 19. Two in particular were that the Buddhist Monastery at Eskdalemuir was not open to visitors, and that Historic Environments Scotland's Caerlaverock Castle was not fully open

  • "Moffat is a lovely town and makes a great base."

The house is lovely and well equipped with an accurate online description. There is nowhere to sit outside, but as the church is only a few steps away, you can sit on a bench with your coffee/ wine outside the church. Any problems are quickly resolved, such as the loss of WiFi briefly. My only suggestions for improvement would be the addition of a small freezer to the kitchen and some information on local walks - I found a great walk on the last day and it was too late - could be included in the online welcome pack.

  • "Church view cottage is perfect in every way and we enjoyed a fantastic break here as a family of three."

The cottage is in a great location and was exceptionally clean when we arrived (also with a lovely welcome basket). I have already recommended church view to friends/family as the perfect base for a wonderful holiday in Scotland.

Great location for getting out an about. Very friendly town with plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars.

  • "The cottage was in a perfect location with easy parking."

Spotlessly clean & well equipped. As we were here under covid conditions it meant that several places / bars weren’t open, however in the places that were we were made to feel welcome. The restrictions did not majorly impact our enjoyment of Moffat. We look forward to returning to the cottage sometime in the future when life returns to normal.

  • "This is one of the best cottages we have had the fortune to stay at."

The pictures don't do it justice. We visited for 2 nights with our dog at a time where it was almost impossible to find a property at a decent price. The property sits on an idilic ally way looking over the stunning church. The whole cottage was spotless to the point I was convinced we were the first visitors to stay after a major refurbishment. All the household contents are brand new and in an exceptionally clean condition. For me the stove was the best feature and just made the whole place cosy and warm. Very easy to light and control. Did not need to use the hive heating once. The Retro GPO telephone was a nice touch, and couldn't help but call it to hear the ringer. Beds were very comfortable and although less than half a minute from the busy and beautiful main Street of the town, there was no traffic noise whatsoever. The town itself is full of places for food, drinks and general shopping as well as a few wee quirky shops that you just don't see often. There are Plenty of relaxing walks for the dog just a stones throw from the cottage and the stunning gray mare's tail nature reserve just a 20 minute scenic drive. We have already booked the cottage for new year. Highly recommended.

  • "On the 14th February my wife and I took a weekend break away in the little town of Moffat in the southern heart of Scotland."

We stayed two nights at The Church View Cottage which is located right in the centre of the oldest parts of the town. This beautiful cottage is in the perfect location and was accessible to everything i.e walking distance to the shops, pubs, bakery’s, restaurants, petrol station and walking trails. There is also plenty of parking spaces available outside the cottage which is ideal! Our first impression of the cottage was “WOW!” It is simply amazing and has a real cosy feeling to it which can be felt as soon as you’re greeted with the red door from outside and as soon as you step inside and see the living room space. The cottage is extremely clean and is furnished to an excellent standard and has a show room finish (especially the two bathrooms). Downstairs you have the living room space and kitchen and what makes this cottage stand out is the stove! This was the highlight of our stay as we would come back of an evening after a few drinks and something to eat and light the fire. There’s nothing better than winding down for the evening in front of the fire watching TV! The first floor bedroom is a decent size, it’s nicely decorated and the room feels bright. The bed was extremely comfy which made it very hard to get out of in the morning. The ensuite bathroom is very clean and has a modern touch to it. The 2nd bedroom is very spacious and has a spectacular view of the church. We loved the vintage decor which can be seen throughout the cottage. The bathroom opposite is clean and the shower was nice with hot running water. Overall, we found no faults with this cottage. Everything was perfect and it had all the essentials we needed to make our stay as comfortable as possible e.g kitchen utensils, hairdryer, phone chargers, games, TV’s, towels and washing machine and plenty more. We will definitely be booking the Church View Cottage again, we can’t wait to come back! Thank you

The property

Providing attractive views of the church and beautiful views of the hills beyond, Church View Cottage is a warm and welcoming holiday retreat.

The Cottage is located in one of the oldest parts of the town, yet is just 100m from the centre of Moffat.

Whether you're wishing to explore the beautiful Scottish Borders as a couple, or with friends or family, this three-storey cottage promises to be the ultimate sanctuary to return to after your days of rambling and sightseeing.

If you just want to relax, what better place than to have an extended lie in and listen to the church clock chiming the hour?

Enter into the property and find the open-plan living space to your left, with a wood burning stove taking centre stage - warming the room as you snuggle up on the sofas relaxing or watching the flat panel TV.

At the other end of the room you can find the kitchen area, housing all the essential appliances for making everything from a simple picnic to be enjoyed whilst on the go, to a full-blown family meal.

There is a dining table to seat four, where you can enjoy mealtimes together or double up this space to play games brought from home, or one of the board games provided in the cottage.

Moving onto the first floor you will find the first of the elegant double bedrooms, offering its own en-suite with basin and WC as well as a great view of the church, it makes a lovely spot to rest your head.

An attractive fireplace, with large mirror above, completes the picture and makes this room an ideal place to relax in; you can enhance the mood further by lowering the lights and enjoying the flicker of the LED candles provided.

Follow the rope handrail up to the second floor to find the next double bedroom, boasting even more impressive views of the church and with the gleaming shower room adjacent, you could argue it's the cosiest spot in the house.

For those who like to stay connected, there is free Wi-Fi in the property, flat screen TVs in all rooms and plug sockets that contain USB chargers at key points, enabling you to charge your devices easily, even if you forget your charger!

Alternatively, if your wish is to escape technology altogether, you can lock your phone away in the (just for fun) mobile phone jail – and challenge yourself to keep it there!

Moffat makes a wonderful base for a holiday, located just 1.5 miles from the motorway, the bustling High St boasts a good selection of eateries, shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants, alongside the famous Moffat Toffee, Moffat Whisky, a museum and its own Gala in July, there's plenty to explore on your doorstep.

The town is busy right through the season with a packed calendar of events and is also a convenient base to visit the other Border towns, such as Peebles, Selkirk and Melrose.

You can find out more about events in the town by visiting their events website at visitmoffat.co.uk There is so much to see and do in the area, with stunning scenery surrounding the town, and must - visit locations from the stunning St Mary’s Loch, to the oldest inhabited house in Scotland at Traquair - and for those who like a physical challenge a visit to the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall is a must.

Whether you like walking, mountain biking (a mountain biking mecca is located at Glentress Forest), watching the wildlife or just relaxing in a friendly and welcoming Scottish town, Moffat is the ideal location.

The town also boasts a park with boating lake and putting, an 18-hole golf course, fishing, a couple of garden centres, tennis courts, bowling and a cafe with soft play area.

The Solway Coastline also contains some of the best beaches in the Borders.

About the location

Dumfries 21 miles

Nestling in the Annandale valley, Moffat developed in the 17th century from a village to a spa town where the sulphurous waters of the Moffat Well were held to have the power to heal and this led to an influx of visitors throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the buildings in the town date from this period and the present Town Hall was originally developed as a Bath House. The original well can still be visited and is a 1.5 mile walk from the town into the surrounding countryside. In addition to its renown as a spa town, Moffat also grew in stature due to the wool trade and also its position as a stopping point on journeys between England and Scotland. Today the town is popular with tourists and not just because of the superb scenery affording many opportunities for great walking, cycling and fishing. Situated 50 miles from Glasgow and Edinburgh, Moffat is the ideal base for travelling to events in the cities. It has a range of attractions including the Moffat Museum, theatres, art galleries and a selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. Treat yourself to some famous Moffat Toffee and don’t miss the annual Moffat Gala in July and not forgetting the renowned Moffat Sheep Races in August!
