  • "Extremely comfortable house with all mod cons."

Only minor point for attention is the gate to park your car requires a latch to keep it open as it swings back on it,so own .My wife had to hold it open to enable me to get the car inside. An individual would have no chance.Plus only a small car can maneuver into the space.

Thank you for your lovely comments. Apologies about the gate swinging back on you when you were trying to park. I will sort that problem out. I look forward to welcoming you back to ~Wood End in the future. Kind regards, Alma Westwood Property Owner

The garden is overgrown & poorly maintained with dog mess everywhere & if you have a large car the offroad parking is tight

The garden is a 'wild' garden, but for you to find dog mess everywhere is totally unacceptable, I agree. Guests with dogs are requested, and expected, to clean up after their pets, which most people do, but unfortunately there are some irresponsible dog owners who do not do this, and I apologise that you encountered this disrespectful behaviour . Yes, parking for a large car is not good on the driveway, but there is ample off-road parking outside the front door, as the property is at the end of the cul-de-sac. Very peaceful and locals very friendly

Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your holiday at Wood End . Yes, it is a steep climb up the garden and care is needed, the steps are slippery in the winter when they are wet, but if you are able, as you say, the view from the top is well worth the climb, especially at sunset. • "The location is stunning for 3 adults with bikes and a dog but there is no storage for bikes."

Both the outside porch and other building were full of logs, gardening equipment etc - hardly room for wellies. Upstairs there is very low water pressure to the hot taps making it impossible to have a bath. Fortunately the power shower is great. In the kitchen the washing machine is very noisy and so unbalanced it vibrates massively, we wedged card underneath so we could wash the towels. If there had been 4 adults another comfortable chair would be needed. Such a very clean, well equipped and comfortable property but all these pretty minor points would make us think twice about booking again. Thank you for our stay

Thank you for your review and I am so pleased you loved the location and found the cottage clean and comfortable. The suite is designed to seat 4 people, with the sofa being a 3-seater. Apologies on the lack of storage space for bicycles. I hope to remedy that over the winter, but meanwhile bikes can be stored under the kitchen window, covered by the large tarpaulin. Apologies also about the lack of hot water pressure in the bathroom, more noticeable if the dishwasher or washing machine is on in the kitchen. The cottage is at the end of the water supply pipe, being in a cul-de-sac, and can be subject to low water pressure on occasion. Unfortunately, there is little I can do about this but I will notify my water provider that there have been some issues over the water pressure recently. Regarding the washing machine, if the contents are unbalanced it does have a tendency to 'walk' and be very noisy but I thought this problem had been cured I do hope you will consider returning to Wood End in the future. Hot water very slow.

Thank you for your positive review. Unfortunately the property is at the end of the water pipeline and is occasionally subject to low pressure, which is a nuisance I agree. I am contacting my water provider to see if anything can be done to rectify this problem. Regards, Alma Westwood Property Owner

The cottage was clean, well equipped and in the perfect location. The walks in Dalbeattie Wood are fantastic, and Dalbeattie itself has a good selection of shops and pubs etc. We really enjoyed our stay at Wood End cottage, and would definitely recommend it.

Thank you for this lovely comment. I am very pleased you enjoyed your holiday at Wood End so much and I look forward to welcoming you back in the future. We constantly aim to make improvements to add to guests' enjoyment of their holiday : a new double bed is being delivered next week, a decking area is in the process of being built in the garden and the wild garden will be partly re-planted in the autumn/winter.. • "The cottage was in a fantastic position next to the woods , easy access to some wonderful walks ."

Beds were comfortable . It was a very steep climb to the garden area which I wouldn’t recommend for very young children.

Thank you for your positive feedback. I am so pleased you enjoyed your holiday; as you say, there are some wonderful walks, both short and long, through those beautiful woods. I hope you saw some red squirrels, though sadly the greys are now moving in. Yes, the wild garden is very steep and there are notices saying it is not suitable for children, but there is a lovely view from the lawn on the first terrace. A small patio area to seat four people is being constructed at the top- of the first steps, which are easy to access. There is a playing field for children almost opposite the cottage which has swings, a slide and other equipment, along with a football pitch, where the local children are happy to play football with our guests' children . Unfortunately as reported by previous guests, the double bed was not fit for purpose - in fact any movement disturbed everybody's sleep to the extent that our daughter & her dog had to return home - a 500 mile return journey - after just two nights, spoiling the holiday. If the bed was ever replaced , however we would consider a return to the cottage.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that the bed caused problems; a new bed has been ordered and delivery is awaited. It is good to know that you enjoyed the location; as you say, there are some delightful walks in the wood and I'm sure you found Plantain Loch with its ducks and herons, just a short walk from the cottage. There were a few niggles we had with the cottage. The fridge was way too small and the downstairs layout could do with some thought. Only 1 chair and 1 sofa for 4 adults was a bit awkward. A cream carpet in a holiday let that allows pets was concerning. We covered the floor in large blankets we brought with us! Beds were comfortable enough but mattresses were very soft (not great for bad backs)! Some thought could be given to the garden/outside area so dogs could be let out without being put on a lead. We're nitpicking though - all in all, we had a perfectly lovely 5 night stay and we would definitely look at rebooking in the future. The location couldn't have been more perfect.

The cottage was very comfortable - the only downside is it doesn’t have a freezer just an ice making compartment so you have to plan your shopping to take this into consideration. All in all - good value for money.

Thank you for your lovely feedback. I am so pleased you enjoyed your holiday and found everything to your liking. The cottage does not have a freezer but the town is seven minutes' walk away and there are good grocers and butchers available there. Small items of food, eg. peas, chops, ice cream, can be stored in the ice-making compartment. We are very fortunate to have the lovely Town Wood on our doorstep and it is possible to walk all day through the forest, or cycle on the various 7-stanes cycle routes. The 4-mile walk through the forest to Kippford is well doing, then you can enjoy the hospitality of one of the two pubs, or the café, all on the sea front. Now the negatives small double bed very uncomfortable after 2 nights my husband suggested we sleep in the single beds which we found a lot more comfortable the bedding did not smell fresh so I had to frebreze the bedding on leaving you are asked to wash the bedding and towels before you leave well I found out why the bedding did not smell fresh the washing machine is far to small and dirty and smelt awful all black around the rubber and dirty dispenser draw . The towels were hard and smelt not very nice I actually went and bought 2 new bath towels to use for us. The kitchen was dirty microwave had not been cleaned toaster full of crumbs kitchen was not inviting at all very clutterd as was the cupboard under the sink onion skins left in the green food bin and out of date food left in the cupboard above the microwave the porch is an eye sore full of clutter cobwebs on the bookshelf in the lounge went to.pull a book out to read it and it was full of cobwebs as was the shelf we got the hoover out to hoover around it was full and smelt awful so my husband had to change the bag. Knife and fork draw were filthy think the housekeeping is very poor such a shame as it is a lovely place to stay flowers and biscuits a nice touch but it would be nice if a pint of milk could be left in the fridge for a cuppa on arrival we have stayed in many cottages with sykes never had to wash the bedding and towels on departure and always had the basics on arrival.

Thank you for your feedback, from which I am pleased to see you found the cottage warm and comfortable and liked the area. I am sorry you found the double bed too small and uncomfortable; it is standard size and is having a new mattress at the end of this season. As regards leaving milk for guests, we used to leave one pint but with so many people now being vegan or vegetarian it was decided not to leave any as we did not want wastage. This policy will be reviewed in the light of your comments. Tea, coffee and sugar are available. Guests are asked to put their towels in to wash if they have time before they leave as this helps my housekeeper to complete the changeover but she does not expect guests to wash their bedding. As for the other matters you raised, these will be dealt with as necessary. Regards, Alma Westwood. Property Owner

  • "Driving up to the cottage was terrifying as we had to drive through what looked like a criminal council estate although we were pleased when we got to the cottage as it is right next to the woods."

On arrival we were greeted by a porch full of stuff which looked like it had been dumped by previous tenants. A pad on kitchen table giving us the bin day and asking us to wash the towels on leaving, which I did but the washing machine was way to small for the amount of towels, the only washing liquid I could find was in the cupboard under the sink which was jam packed with all sorts of cleaning products and was dirty. The towels were rough and smelt foisty. The oven tray needed washing before I could use it as had greasy food residue in it. The window sill was dirty and the glass jars with 3 dish washer tablets in were greasy and dusty( I washed these up). As were the biscuit tins on top of units which I decided not to use. There were nearly empty sauce bottles, tea, coffee and sugar didn't feel useable. Some biscuits were left but as I'm dairy free I couldn't eat them. I couldn't tell which tap was hot or cold because the colours were cover in grime. There was too much stuff in a small kitchen that you couldn't use the work top. The toaster was a 2 slice for a 4 person dwelling. The saucepans were also dirty. When I found the glasses on day 3 in the top of saucepan cupboard they needed washing before use. The light switches had dirty finger marks on. The TV was dated not a smart one. Bookshelf was dusty. The 3 piece had stains on it and didn't fit the room. The coasters and placemats were sticky. The stairs had spikes in them from the carpet fixings which stuck into my feet. The bath took an age to fill and the mixer tap would only do boiling hot or freezing cold and drained almost instantly. Whereas the shower was good but didn't drain I can only imagine the hair hadn't been removed from previous tenants I didn't want to look to clean it, the bathroom sink tap was loose and again didn't work properly I didn't get any hot water from it just tepid and cold. The bed was creaky and noisy but it was comfortable and the sheets smelt clean, the light shade above the bed was dusty I cleaned that because I couldn't sleep with it. The garden was over grown and unusable. I tried the gate which hinges were rusted through and there was a shed which was falling to bits. On wednesday (day 5) someone came while we were out and chopped down outside kitchen and on Thursday cut the grass, we left Friday. The whole place needs modernising. I kept finding little white dog hairs on my clothes and in my crochet wool.

I am sorry you did not find the accommodation to your liking, or the standard of cleanliness up to your requirements, especially as my housekeeper often receives compliments. The garden was neglected as my usual gardener has ceased trading but did not tell me, but as you say, I arranged for someone else to come and tidy it up. As for the shed, it is due for dismantling, is not in the main garden and it is not for guests' use. In the past, guests have remarked favourably on the contents of the kitchen. Yes, you are correct, a four-slice toaster would be better; the two-slice toaster was an interim measure replacing the original four slice one which broke, but the purchase of the four-slice toaster was overlooked. My apologies for that. The drainage problems with the shower are due to the nature of the plug-hole; it is certainly not clogged with hairs, my caretaker is most particular about that. I am afraid nothing can be done about the water pressure in the bathroom which leads to the issues you described. Tea, coffee and sugar are replenished regularly for guests' use on their arrival. The cottage is an 1830's stoneworkers' house and has been modernised in keeping with its character. Property Owner

Well equipped and very comfortable. Downfall is the garden which is totally overgrown and practically inaccessible. The kitchen would be so much lighter if all the shrubs were cut back. When we did go up the very overgrown steps the lawn wasn't cut either. It wasnt a problem as the gravel area at the side of the house was a lovely sun trap but if you are advertising a garden it should be in a usable state. But we really enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for your feedback. I am so pleased you found the accommodation well equipped and comfortable. but I am so sorry about the garden. My regular gardener has not been since June. I am unable to contact him to find out why and am wondering if he has ceased trading without letting me now. He was always so reliable. I am now in the process of finding another gardener who will be able to come immediately to take over regular maintenance. I can only apologise once more. I am working to resolve this problem as quickly as possible.` Property Owner

). Lovely walks in the forest right next to the cottage, walked to Kippford which is about 5 miles which was a trek but worth it. Cottage itself really nice and comfortable inside but didn't really use the garden as it is a bit steep at the back would have benefitted from a standard outside table and chairs with sun brolley etc. on the gravel bit at the side as it was boiling on our week here (24+ degrees most days). Minor thing really. Also brilliant Chinese takeaway at The Ship Inn 5 min walk away! If you want a cottage in this area book this one

Thank you for this lovely positive and helpful feedback. It is good to have recommendations of places to go for future visitors. I hope you caught the bus back from Kippford and enjoyed a drink or lunch at The Anchor or The Mariner before you left. Bikes are for hire at the nearby garage so guests can ride through the forest or the 7-Stanes trail through the forest, from easy to challenging grades. Yes, unfortunately the garden is steep but there is a seat up on the first level where you can have a glass of wine or whatever and admire the view over the housetops to the hills beyond and watch the sunset. Thank you for the suggestion about the table on the gravel. We do provide a fold-up table and four camping chairs, but have not placed anything permanent because some guests like to park their car there instead of on the road. There is a sunshade in the cupboard under the stairs, but I must get a base for it then it can be used on the gravel. Property Owner

Downstairs needs alot of TLC as it has not been maintained to a decent standard for quite some time. Stained tablecloth, chipped plates, outside chairs not cleaned, faulty fridge, I could go on. Reading past reviews makes us feel we stayed in a completely different place as I cannot agree with very much. A very uninterested response from the housekeeper when we contacted her and no interest from the owner when we put a complaint into Sykes re our lost food due to a faulty fridge. We requested some kind of refund as we were out of pocket but nothing so far. If I could give this place a minus I would. I almost feel sorry for the people who have booked down the line. It is not a child friendly place and if you fancy an outside drink when the better weather comes be warned of the hike to get to the garden where there are two uncomfortable wooden chairs and no table. GOOD LUCK

It was disappointing to receive these negative comments., especially in the light of so many positive ones received both immediately before and after them. I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay. My housekeeper found one chipped plate, the tablecloth is changed weekly and no-one else has reported the fridge as being faulty. Maybe it was turned down to too low a temperature setting? My apologies concerning the outside chairs, which had indeed been overlooked. These have now been replaced. The seat up the garden does have a table, in between the two seats. The garden is accessed by two sets of steps, with handrails, as shown on Sykes' photos, and is not suitable for young children, but there is a large playing field opposite the cottage which has play equipment and a football pitch. It is worth the climb up to the garden seat to sit and watch the sunset or admire the view. I welcome feedback from guests as this helps us to maintain or improve standards. There were some building works being undertaken across the road which resulted in a noisy start to the day, but as we were out exploring most of the time it was a minor issue. We really enjoyed the open fire, such a novelty for us. It is in an ideal setting at the end of the road right next to the forest so no passing traffic and convenient for forest walks. Dalbeattie is a nice small town with several pubs and places to eat, in particular The Birch Tree Hotel which is dog friendly. We went to Castle Douglas several times and to Kirkcudbright for the brilliant food shops. The only improvement that could be made would be a Smart TV. Overall a lovely relaxing holiday.

I am so pleased you had such a lovely time at the cottage and found it so well-equipped and cosy. Dumfries & Galloway is a beautiful part of Scotland, and Dalbeittie and its surrounding areas are very dog-friendly, with some lovely walks and rides. Thank you for your suggestion about having a Smart TV, which I intend to install very shortly. I look forward to welcoming you again in the future, when you will also find there is a new cooker. • "I spent 3 nights at Woodend and from the moment I arrived I felt welcomed."

The cottage is not luxurious but really comfortable and well equipped. Being on a no through road and beside the forest, it was peaceful and easy to walk without taking the car. For me this was the perfect cottage.

Thank you for your positive comments. We are very pleased you felt welcomed and found the cottage comfortable, that is our aim. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner
