Did not realise how far away we were from places, however enjoyed the lovely scenic routes to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cumnock, Stranraer, Port Patrick, Dumfries House, Gretna Green, Ayr. • "I enjoyed my week in the Granary."

The original barn has been renovated and refurbished to a high standard and contains all that is needed for a self-catering holiday. I was particularly impressed by the main bedroom having a most comfortable huge bed with pure cotton bed-linen, which certainly helped to have a good night's sleep. The location is good, with lovely open views at the back and the lochan is a haven for birds. Sadly, strong winds during the week curtailed my use of the picnic table in the rear garden. The only negative point I can say about my stay was the roughness of part of the access road from Sanquhar, as it does deteriorate upon leaving the tarmac lane. This is no reflection on the owners, as their own straight access road has a much less stony surface. I wanted somewhere to walk from the door and use the car as little as possible and this I successfully accomplished, in part due to the reluctance to drive too often on the rough part of the lane. With the Southern Uplands Way so close to the property, accessing pure country is easy and just what I hoped-for.

  • "A wonderful location for exploring SW Scotland although the roads in the area are small and to reach anywhere of interest usually requires an hour's drive each way, buts that's the charm of the place."

Great for bird watching, fishing and walking. Accommodation was generous, the beds comfortable and the amenities were as described in the brochure. Access to the property is up a dirt track which might be difficult in winter without four-wheel drive, but not a problem at other times. Very reasonably priced and a perfect location for our two dogs.

Fresh milk, tea, coffee and shortbread all provided. The property was spotlessly clean, warm and bright. The kitchen was really well equipped - (I always take one or two things from home, just in case they are not provided, but they were not needed!) There was a small enclosed private garden for Tommy, our Westie Dog, plus the use of a field to exercise him safely away from the sheep. The Granary is situated at the end of a long farm track but it is WELL worth the drive just to see the fabulous views from the property. An ideal base for walkers. We would certainly recommend The Granary.

The cottage was excellent with the views absolutely amazing. Unfortunately the weather was not good enough to enjoy the back garden as much as would have liked but there were some lovely places to visit anyway with a bit of rain. The beds were fantastic and comfortable and it was like a home from home experience with everything we needed to be able to cook lovely meals in the place too and to have cold fresh tasting or hot water straight out of the tap. Very pleasurable experience in all and we are looking to book again to go back there next year. Hoping for better weather to enjoy the outdoors more.

Loved everything and would definitely return. Sheila and son incredibly friendly and happy to chat but not intrusive at all. Daisy our dog loved having the field at the back all to herself and the view was beautiful. Very clean and the master bedroom was huge! All items provided but I’m sure if you needed anything extra they would happily facilitate this for you. Peaceful setting which was exactly what we wanted. Yes there is a track to the property but unless your in the equivalent of a Morris Mini Minor you really should not have a issue! The track is a little bumpy in one or two places (review of April 18) but I've done much worse! It's certainly not atrocious. I'd just recommend trying to arrive in daylight (we were delayed so did it in pitch darkness) as the last mile or so isn't lit and is single track. • "It was quite possibly the cleanest and most fully functional self catering cottage we have ever stayed in."

We could hardly fault it at all. The only issue that we found (and this was a very small issue) was... The hanging pull cord light in the bathroom would fail to work if it had been on for quite a while and then turned off. This meant that the second one to have a shower in the evening would have to have the shower in darkness, or with the bathroom door open to get the light from the hall. It was as if the light switch "heated up" after a while, and required to cool down to re-engage. A simple wall switch would have been better. Otherwise, the cottage was brilliant. Shaun Wilson.

About the location

SANQUHAR

Dumfries 26 miles; Ayr 31 miles; Kilmarnock 32 miles.

A former Royal Burgh, the town of Sanquhar sits on the River Nith in Dumfries and Galloway. The name derives from the Gaelic 'Seann Cathair', meaning 'Old Fort' and at the southern end of the town there can still be seen the ancient ruins of the castle. Robert Burns was a frequent visitor to Sanquhar and wrote many of his best known nature poems while inspired by the surrounding countryside. The town today boasts a selection of bars, shops and cafes, a 9 hole golf course, a modern swimming pool with attached fitness centre, and the A’ The Airts Arts Centre, which showcases a wide variety of local and regional arts and crafts. In addition, the town lays claim to the oldest working Post Office in the world at 300 years and counting. Magnificent Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate lies only 10 miles to the south and offers a wide range of family and outdoor activities throughout the year. Sanquhar is virtually encircled by hills with the Carsphairn and Scaur range to the west and the Lowther Hills to the south east. The Southern Upland Way, a 212 mile coast-coast walking path, passes through the village. Mountain bikers too are well-served by waymarked trails at Drumlanrig Castle and the 7stanes trail at Ae Forest, not to mention many local tracks and forest roads. With direct rail access to/from Glasgow and Carlisle, Sanquhar has much to offer throughout the year.
