Sat at an altitude of 467 metres, Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland. It comprises of a scattering of traditional dwellings and a pub named the Wanlockhead Inn. The village is known for its links to Scottish poet Robert Burns, who visited Wanlochhead and wrote his poem, 'Pegasus at Wanlockhead' while sheltering from the snow at Ramage's Inn. Located within the Lowther Hills, the peaceful village presents plenty of opportunities for walkers and cyclists with Mennock Pass nearby and the 212 mile-long Southern Upland Way passing through the settlement. Situated within the former Miners' Library is the Museum of Lead Mining, which offers a fascinating insight into the local industry and gives visitors the chance to explore a former working mine. The Straitsteps Cottages allow you to experience what life was like for a 18th and 19th century miner and the Leadhills and Wanlockhead Light Railway is open to the public over some weekends during summer.
