  • "Chestnut Cottage was everything we hoped for and more."

The owners had thought of everything down to the last detail of colour coordinated furnishings and kitchen equipment. We were so pleased to see how seriously environmental issues were taken including the geothermal heating and recycling. The cottage afforded a high level of privacy whilst ensuring a high level of security in a very pleasant setting.the person managing the stay was very pleasant and helpful and her chocolate brownies were to die for!. Thank you Gravel Farm for an enjoyable stay.

About the location

Cambridge 14 miles; Peterborough 30.9 miles

This village and civil parish is some 4 miles south-west of Ely in Cambridgeshire. It boasts a few local amenities, including the Red Lion pub, a former coaching inn, now serving traditional pub food and a friendly atmosphere. The Stretham Old Engine is the main attraction in the village, a steam-powered engine used to pump water from the flood-affected Fenlands to the River Great Ouse. There are other notable buildings in the area, including Stretham Windmill, a Grade II listed building, now a private home, dating back to the 19th century. The cathedral city of Ely, with its unique Octagonal tower, is home to the only Stained Glass museum in England. For the historians of the group, you can visit Oliver Cromwell’s house or Ely Museum, housed in the city’s old gaol and even explore some of the antique shops along the main streets. The River Great Ouse offers relaxing boat trips, riverside strolls and opportunities for picnics. However, there are many local eateries to choose for a light bite, afternoon teas or a tasty dinner. Wicken Fen is a wonderful spot for wildlife watching and the Welney Wetlands Centre provides plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy. The university city of Cambridge rests on the River Cam and offers many fascinating attractions, such as the Bridge of Sighs, the Church of St Mary the Great and the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens. A lovely base to choose for a restful holiday in Cambridgeshire.
