  • "Lovely place, warm and cosy."

The owners communication is excellent. They resolved a drainage issue before we even knew it was an issue, so very on the ball with maintenance. Throughly recommend this place.

  • "The property is spacious and spotlessly clean."

It has lovely views and is very peaceful. The kitchen is well equipped and the lounge is very comfortable as are the beds. Easy to get to Ely and Cambridge (Park and Ride) and there is a local pub. The owner of The Stables, Alicia, is the kindest most generous person who does everything to make your stay special. Can’t recommend this beautiful place highly enough.

The accommodation was spacious and exceptionally clean with an unusually well stocked kitchen providing plenty of crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, etc. Bedrooms very comfortable. Lounge seating wonderfully comfortable and cosy (though a little low for those with mobility issues). Not sure we could think of anything that was not provided. Lots to do with Cambridge only half hour away, Ely on doorstep, lovely walks in fens etc, etc. Finally, very welcoming and helpful hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

  • "Visiting Cambridgeshire after our previous week in the Malvern Hills couldn’t have produced a more different landscape, but the setting was ideal for our interests of countryside walking, discovering local wildlife and visiting National Trust sites."

As usual a single week wasn’t enough, as we discovered more places we’d like to visit as the week wore on, though one day being a complete washout didn’t help matters. Over the week we visited Cambridge, Ely, Wicken Fen, Kingfisher Bridge NR, Devil’s Dyke and Anglesey Abbey, all in close proximity, and all places we’d like to explore further. We found the accommodation to be well suited to our needs, spacious and comfortable for the five of us, the layout works well, and loved the arty decor. With the owners close by it was good to have local knowledge on tap and handy for any queries, the welcome basket was a lovely mix of treats, going down well with the kids in particular. The cottage gardens held plenty of interest if your hobby just happens to be macro photography, and the boy’s interest in insects was well catered for with butterflies and dragonflies galore as well as many bugs in the wilder areas. A stargazing session on one of the clearer nights was incredible compared to back home, and produced shooting stars and satellites galore. All in all a perfect base for exploring with so much around to discover, then to relax on an evening in total seclusion. Thanks for an enjoyable stay.

The property was clean, well equipped and the owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. Due to the size of the property, it comfortably accommodated the five adults in our party. Overall, was one of the best properties we have stayed in for some time. The location was ideal for our needs: close to both Ely and the Cambridge Park and Ride in Milton as well as many other places we wanted to visit. We would, without any doubt, return to this property again in the future.

Alicia left a generous and thoughtful basket of goodies for us which was much appreciated. The Stables was very spacious as there was just the two of us and was situated in open countryside affording peace and tranquility. Whilst practically everything you would need was provided, it would have been helpful to have a washing machine and wardrobes in the cottage, but the absence of these did not detract from our enjoyable stay.

  • "We booked The Stables for its location and because of the positive reviews on the Sykes website."

The price was also low for a week in a holiday cottage anywhere. It is certainly spacious and light, with open views of the surrounding farmland and the owners' garden, which gives a nice setting. The sitting room is enormous and has comfy sofas, and there's plenty of room for a family and lots of luggage. Communication was good and the owners left a very thoughtful tray of food items for us, including gluten free for our son. However, there were downsides which were not apparent in the website details: the bathroom is described as in the middle of the property but it doesn't state that this is a totally internal room, with no outside ventilation nor a fan and that the bedrooms are the far side of the large sitting room so that at night you have to walk through the sitting room to get to the bathroom; the shower arrangement would also be difficult to manage if you had teenagers or young children, and the whole bathroom is in need of refurbishment. The kitchen is also in need of refurbishment, like the bathroom; also the oven wasn't clean and the surfaces and cupboards were sticky in places, with the cutlery and mugs smeary too; despite the reviews on the website it could not be described as "well equipped". The electrics seemed quite dated and there was a shortage of plug sockets. The main bedroom has a lovely matching duvet set and curtains and the mattress seemed comfortable, but the room smelled damp. The other beds had old or at least very uncomfortable mattresses. The website did not mention that the owners' studio forms part of the Stables and there is a locked door to this, which felt a little intrusive in terms of privacy, as there was no key on the Stables side of the door. In hindsight, we should probably have been guided by the low price to modify our expectations, but we have always been very happy with Sykes cottages and our choice was influenced by the positive reviews. However, we would recommend that Sykes check out the property and make the relevant adjustments to the property description.

We were also looking for somewhere reasonably close to amenities but which was quiet and remote. A tall order…..but the Stables at Wicken fit the bill perfectly! 10 minutes drive from the picturesque town of Ely, where there is plenty of options for eating, but situated up a side track on farmland, it was a perfect fit. Our hosts (who live close by) were very friendly and accommodating. The cottage itself is a converted barn and is reasonably priced, spacious, comfortable and extremely well appointed. It was an ideal jump-off point for getting to Duxford (the air museum is a must-see), Cambridge and Sandringham (lovely grounds but book in advance). Kingfisher Bridge Reserve, which is walking distance, is also well worth a visit. It proved to be an ideal cottage, in an ideal location, for the two of us. I’m sure we’ll be back!

The immediate area is in farm land so at night its extremely quiet and pitch black without light pollution, star gazing is a must.. The bungalow was very equipped, infact I took too many things with us as Ali had provided everything we needed. It's a really warm and extremely comfortable bungalow albeit a little dated but certainly not worn! Ali made us feel really welcome she allowed the kids to pick apples off her many trees ,so we made lovely crumbles. She also brought us pumpkins for the kids as it was halloween. We used Tesco for our food delivery with no problem at all. The bungalow was immaculate, I myself as a domestic cleaner notices every bit of dust , but I was amazed at the cleanliness, the BEST we have ever been too. If I had only one suggestion to make it would be to put a washing machine in, even if it was in the adjoining garage, having 3 children it's a real bonus to be able to do a few loads. Ali would of let us use her machine but I would of felt awkward. A lovely relaxing stay. Thank you Ali

I would make some suggestions for the property. I didn't not see a WiFi connection and it would be helpful to have a router in place in the property. We also arrived quite late at night and it was difficult to locate the turning into the property on a country lane. It might help to have an illuminated or reflective sign- however, I appreciate it may have been my sat nav which "arrived at destination" some 300m short of the property. However these comments are merely minor improvements on an excellent rental property.
